2 Master of the Kitchen June 2 or June 3 Location: Thursday June 2, Schroeder s Home, 230 South Farragut, West Point Friday June 3, Wisner Pilger High School Family and Consumer Science Classroom Start Time: 9:00 a.m. End Time: 3:00 p.m. Cost: $19.50 Pre-registration Deadline: May 26 What to Bring: containers with lids to take leftovers home in. Special Note: (Minimum of 5 participants and maximum of 12 participants) Boys and girls are encouraged to participate. All participants will help with washing and drying dishes and clean up throughout the workshop. Special Note: Please bring containers to take left overs home in. Also come hungry and willing to try new flavors. The morning session will include learning about settings on your camera, basic lighting techniques, and experimenting with creative ideas. During the lunch break participants will print fair worthy photos. During the afternoon session you will complete 2 fair exhibits that will be ready for fair with completed data tags and entry tags. You will need to attend both sessions. Special Note: Each participant will need their own camera, no smart phones or tablets will be used to take pictures. Please bring an empty memory card to use in your camera (this will make the printing process go quicker) and fully charged batteries. 3 Lounge Pants and/boxer Shorts - June 23 Location: Schroeder s Home, 230 South Farragut, West Point Start Time: 9:00 a.m. End Time: 3:00 p.m. Cost: $9.00 pattern provided Pre-registration Deadline: June 20 (min 5 participants) Description: Like to be comfy and lounge about when you are not too busy? Learn how to lounge in style in a pair of pant or capris made in this Clover College. You will learn how to select a pattern size, how to pin and cut a pattern, sew straight seams, put in an elastic waistband, and hem your own lounge pants. What to Bring: 2 ½ yards of 44 to 45 pre-washed fabric; 7/8 yard ¾ elastic, for full length lounge pants; OR 1 yard of fabric, 7/8 3/4 elastic (or buy waist measurement minus 2 ) No plaids or one way design fabrics; pins sewing shears; matching thread, sewing machine, sewing tools and a helper to work with you. Suggested Project Enrollment: STEAM Level 1 and 2 Special Notes: We will take a lunch break. You can bring a lunch or go out for a fast food meal. You will get a good start on your project and will be able to take it home to finish. You are welcome to work into the afternoon. Cross Body Bag/Purse - June 23 Location: Schroeder s Home, 230 South Farragut, West Point Start Time: 1:30 p.m. End Time: 6:00 p.m., Cost: $17.50 includes all supplies and pattern for project. Pre-registration Deadline: June 16 Description: Learn how to make a cross body bag that will also help you to learn how to put in a zipper. Finished projects are great for your personal use, gifts for family and friends or as citizenship projects. What to Bring: thread, sewing machine (Deb has three machines that participants can use), sewing tools and a helper to work with you Suggested Project Enrollment: Sewing for Fun, STEAM 1: FUNdamentals, STEAM 2: Simply Sewing, STEAM: Beyond the Needle Special Note: Bring a snack for a mid-evening break. Sample cross body bags are made up and available for viewing at the Extension Office. What to bring: Display boxes and pins will be provided. Please bring a glass jar with straight sides with lid (pickle jars, some salsa jars, NO canning jars please); 1 empty cereal box. A sack lunch. Farragut, West Point Start Time: 9:00 a.m. End Time: 4:00 p.m. (Come and go as it works into your schedule) Tuesday June 28, Noon to 9:00 p.m. Cost: $3.00 per day Ages: all ages and sewing skills Pre-registration Deadline: June 7, June 21 and June 24 (min 5 participants each day) Description: Participants will come with their projects cut out ready to mark and sew. Goal is to assemble member s projects for this year s 4-H projects. What to bring: Sewing machine (Deb has three machines that participants can use), helper to work with you, fabric, interfacing suitable for your project, sewing pins, cloth shears, tape measure, and pattern and directions. To take advantage of clinic time preferable that you come with your fabric cut out and ready to sew. Suggested Project Enrollment: Sewing projects, Design Decisions and Quilt Quest Special Note: We will take a lunch break each day. You can bring a lunch or go out for a fast food meal. Members working on quilts are also invited to use these days to make progress on your quilt.
4 Cultural Foods and Breads - July 13 Location: Wisner Pilger High School Family and Consumer Science Classroom (West Point youth can ride with Deb to and from West Point) Start Time: 9:00 a.m. End Time: 3:00 p.m. Instructors: Jessica, Kayla and Jolene Svoboda assisted by Deb Schroeder Cost: $18.50 Pre-registration Deadline: July 6 What to bring: containers with lids to take leftovers home in. Description: We will explore different types of cultural breads such as scones that can be exhibited in the international and cultural exhibits. Participants will work in groups to make different recipes of the different types of cultural foods/breads. Food products will be evaluated against the score sheets that judges use and we will practice picking foods for exhibits. Participants will work together to prepare a simple lunch to enjoy with their cultural foods. Modeling with Ease - July 25, West Point Start Time: 5:00 p.m. End Time: 7:00 p.m. Cost: $5.00 Ages: For all Youth 8-18 Pre-registration Deadline: July 21 Description: Develop Confidence and refine your modeling skills for Fashion Revue Judging. During the clinic you will learn modeling techniques, hints for writing your narration and how to accessorize your outfits with current fashion trends. Kelli will teach you magic with scarves. What to bring: samples of your fabric and pattern or your actual completed outfit or consumer outfit for Fashion Revue Judging. Suggested Project Enrollment: All clothing projects, Decorate Your Duds, Attention Shoppers, Shopping in Style and $15 Outfit Challenge Succulent Gardens (Date TBA) Start Time: 5:00 p.m. End Time: 8:00 p.m. Instructor: Tim Pinkelman Cost: TBA Registration Deadline: TBA (min 5/max 15) Description: A succulent garden is often a good choice for people who do not have a large amount of time to devote to their gardens or are away from the garden for stretches of time on a regular basis. Succulents include aloe, cactus and more. Suggested Project Enrollment: Houseplants ESI Camp - July Location: Cuming County Courthouse Mtg. Rm., West Point Start Time: 9:00a.m. Rocket Workshop (Date TBA) Location: Dinklage Center, Cuming County Fairgrounds Start Time: TBA End Time: TBA Instructor: Bernie, Riley and Calby Ruskamp Cost: TBA Registration Deadline: TBA (min 5 participants) Description: You will learn the basics of building a rocket from a kit. Plus tips and tricks to make a winning rocket, including straight fins, smooth bases, rounded fillets, and what it takes to make your rocket fly straight. Learn how to tackle problems that may occur and the essential safety needed to launch model rockets. This will be a power point format and discussion. No assembling will be done at this workshop. We plan on performing a launch or two, weather permitting. A drawing for a Level II Big Daddy rocket will be held for the participants! What to bring: pencil & paper if you wish to take notes; your own rocket if you have one, so instructors can show you any helpful tips. End Time: Noon Instructor: Julie Kreikemeier - Extension Educator, Colfax County, Cuming County Economic Development, Diversion Cost: $15.00 Registration Deadline: July 9 Recommended: Youth entering 6-9 grade Description: Students will be introduced to skills that will enable them to be local entrepreneurs in their communities. They will have the opportunity to create their own business model from start to finish! They will learn how to create, develop, market and sell their product. Finally, they will be able to learn from area entrepreneurs and pitch their business idea to them. 5 Quilt Binding - July 26 Start Time: 4:30 p.m. CASNR Career Exploration Tour July 27 Location: Meet at Courthouse in West Point to travel to Lincoln West Point Start Time: 7:30 a.m. Courthouse End Time: 8:00 p.m. return to Instructor: Karen Francis and Sue Ellen Pegg UNL CASNR Recruitment Staff and Deb Schroeder, Extension Educator, Cost: $12.50 for partial meal expenses. Supported by a grant from UNL Student Recruitment Funds. Pre-registration Deadline: July 20 What to bring: Comfortable walking shoes for the day. Participants will be asked to dress for business casual (no gym clothes or short shorts) Special Note: This is a great chance for youth and parents to begin to explore career options and educational opportunities and requirements. Open to boys, girls and parents for students entering seventh grade and up. Each year we visit different departments so you are encouraged to participate for a number of years to learn about all to the various opportunities available. End Time: 9:00 p.m. (Come and go as it works into your schedule) Cost: $5.00 Ages: all ages and sewing skills Pre-registration Deadline: July 21 (min 5 participants) Description: Members who have their quilts quilted or tied and ready to bind are invited to come to finish up their quilt. Using the space and tables in the meeting room we will square up your quilt, explore different options for binding your quilt, cut and press binding, learn how to miter the corners, sew on bindings and turn binding and hand stitches to use on the back of your quilt. What to Bring: quilt, fabric for binding, sewing pins, sewing machine, cutting mat, rotary cutter, cutting ruler, cloth shears, tape measure, sewing tools and helper to work with you. Suggested Project Enrollment: Design Decisions and Quilt Quest Special Note: All 4-Hers are invited to participate in this clover college even if you did not start your quilt with the group last winter. What is a Clover College? The purpose is to Have FUN! Expose youth to different types of projects Give them the opportunity to work with other youth Provide a positive, educational experience as they work with their project Additional Information Clover Colleges are open to all youth ages (8-18 by January 1 st ). Please note suggested age and project experience when selecting Colleges Early registration is strongly encouraged. If classes fill quickly we may be able to add additional sections to some of the classes. If we do not reach the minimum number for class size by the registration deadline, the class will be canceled and the fee refunded. Classes will be filled on a first come, first serve basis. Fees will cover the cost of some materials and supplies. A materials list will be sent for individual classes after registration so participants know what to bring. Participants must be picked up immediately after the College. 4-H ers are encouraged to share the information about Clover Colleges with their friends who are not 4-H members. Volunteers (adults or older youth) who would like to help with the classes are asked to call the Extension Office.
