1 4-H Clover Days Thursday June 1, 8, 22 & 29, 2017 Minimum of 5 participants to hold each class unless otherwise stated. Registration Deadline is May 25th. Fees must be paid at time of registration. Fees are non-refundable. Youth ages 5-7 may attend sessions designated for youth 8 & older if accompanied by an adult or older youth (12 & up). LUNCH IS NOT PROVIDED. BRING A SACK LUNCH IF ATTENDING A FULL DAY OR OVER THE LUNCH HOUR! Register online at: or with enclosed registration form. BEE SMART, BEE A POLLINATOR CONSERVATIONIST Honey Bees, Native Bees and other pollinators are in trouble and need our help! Solitary native bees are important pollinators of flowers, vegetables and crops and the numbers of these vital pollinators can be increased by providing nesting cavities. You will create a nesting box for solitary native bees that you can bring to the fair. Experience the mobile honey bee laboratory from the University of Nebraska! All workshop participants receive free pollinator seed packets to enhance pollinator habitat. When: June 1 Time: 9 a.m. to Noon Location: Park Bldg., Fee: $8 Instructor: Judy Wu-Smart, UNL Department of Entomology, Randy Pryor, Extension Educator and Eric Stehlik, 4-H Program Associate CROCHET FOR BEGINNERS Come discover the basics of Crochet. Participants will learn the stitches for making a simple wash cloth which will help them build their Crochet skills for future projects. When: June 1 Time: 10 a.m. to Noon Class Limit: 10 Instructor: Anita Stougard * Bring: 1 skein worsted (medium) weight yarn AND a 5 mm Crochet hook. TIN-FOIL TILES Come have fun creating your own replica tin ceiling tile. Learn metal embossing techniques and go home with a painted tile to enter in the fair and hang on your wall. When: June 1 Time: 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. This session in now full. Location: Park Bldg., No longer accepting registrations. 2 CLOVER KID DAY FOR YOUTH AGES Park Bldg., 4 Workshops During 8 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. Time Frame. $20 fee covers all four workshops. See workshop descriptions below. DRAFT STOPPER Keep the cold Winter winds out of your home or bedroom next Winter with this fun Draft Stopper project. Draft stoppers are filled fabric cylinders that block cold air from coming in under the door. Instructor: Bailey Stougard * Bring: 2 colorful, long, knee socks. Can have fun pattern or be brightly colored. SHARPIE TIE DYE DESIGNS Let your imagination run wild in this Sharpie Tie Dye t-shirt design workshop where you will create a tie dyed shirt using markers. Instructor: Leanne Manning, Extension Educator * Bring: 1 pre-washed and dried white or light pastel colored t-shirt. HEALTHY EATING Learn the basics for eating well and learn how to measure ingredients. Participants will take home a healthy energy bite snack. Instructor: Beth Slagle CLOTHES PIN ART Make your own creative art using clothes pins. These can be used in the kitchen as trivets or anywhere in your home to add a decorative touch to the wall. 3 ANIMAL SCIENCE ANYWHERE Learn and do science experiments related to your animal science projects. Complete three fun, hands on activities, and have several easy to complete Vet Science Poster ideas for the county fair. When: Time: 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. Location: Park Bldg., Age: 5 & up (no adult required to attend with Clover Kid) Fee: $10 Instructor: Darci Pesek, Extension Educator EMBROIDERY CREATIONS Discover how to make basic embroidery stitches and use that information to create your own embroidery design. When: Time: 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Age: 8 & up Instructor: Leanne Manning, Extension Educator * Bring: Embroidery hoop & 12 x 12 or larger white, cotton fabric or larger depending on the size of the hoop. Smaller hoops work best. Thread and needles provided. LEARN, GROW, EAT & GO! Nutrients are important to plants and people to be healthy and grow. Youth will explore the basics of gardening and healthy eating while planting an herb garden, making salsa and baked tortilla chips to eat as a healthy snack, and being active while playing a fun game. When: Time: 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Location: Park Bldg., Age: 8 & up Fee: $15 - includes snack, container, plant and soil for growing herbs. MUST HAVE 10 REGISTERED PARTICIPANTS TO HOLD THIS SESSION. Class Limit: 20 Instructor: Kayla Colgrove & Nicole Stoner, Extension Educators PROJECT RUNWAY Learn the basics of fashion runway modeling from these 4-H ers! You will also be learning other tips that will help you make fashion statements at the 4-H fashion show this summer. When: June 22 Time: 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Age: 5 & up (no adult required to attend with Clover Kid) Instructor: Breauna Derr and Abbey Vales MILLION PILLOWCASES PROJECT You can make a DIFFERENCE by sewing just ONE pillowcase which will be donated to The Million Pillowcase Project to put a smile on the face of a child while in the hospital! Participants will sew a pillowcase to donate and sew a second to enter at the county fair. When: June 22 Time: 10 a.m. to Noon Age: 8 & up Instructor: Breauna Derr, Kim Derr, and Abbey Vales * Bring: Sewing machine, cutting mat & quilting ruler (if you have one), rotary cutter or scissors, pins, and thread. To make 2 pillowcases - bring 1 1/2 yards fabric for body; 1/2 yard fabric for cuff and 1/4 yard for band. DO NOT BRING FAT QUARTERS!
4 PATCHWORK 4-SQUARE PILLOW In this workshop you will learn the basics of sewing, the parts of the sewing machine, and work to complete a patchwork pillow. When: June 22 Time: 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Class Limit: 15 Instructor: Beth Slagle Bring: 1/3 yards of two contrasting woven fabrics (44-45 wide), matching thread, & fabric shears. You can bring a sewing machine if you have one. HEALTHY EATING 101 Gain an understanding of healthy food preparation through hands-on practice. You will learn how to reduce fats and sodium to make your baked products healthier for you and those you love When: June 29 Time: 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Location: Park Bldg., Age: 10 & up Instructor: Beth Slagle BIRDING 101 Learn how to identify local birds and go out to see how many you can find. You will make two bird feeders: a Hummingbird feeder and a bird seed feeder. WIRED FOR WIND & FOOD, FUEL & FIBER Discover engineering through building small wind turbines. Learn about sugar chemistry; the structure of sugars, starches, and cellulose.
