6 CLAS Department Enters Second Year as Safe Office, Hopes to Expand Reach The Department of Counseling, Leadership, Adult Education, and School Psychology (CLAS) is entering its second year as one of the few academic departments designated by the university as a Safe Office. The Safe Office Program is a collaborative effort between the Office of Student Diversity & Inclusion and Alliance of Texas State. Offices and departments that are designated as a Safe Office ensure that Texas State LGBTQIA students are supported and affirmed by providing inclusive and timely assistance and resources with their academic and personal needs. A Safe Office is a place where 75% or more of all full-time (FTE) have completed the four hour Allies Training. See below for more information. The department s hope, however, is to gain a designation at a higher level. We were very excited to learn that [the CLAS Department s] dedication goes beyond just their department, their next goal is taking the lead in ensuring that the College of Education is the first college on our campus to achieve the designation, said Iliana Melendez- Burciaga, Student Conduct Officer for the Dean of Students Office. They are close to reaching this goal. Current Safe Office designations for the College of Education include the advising center, dean s office, additional institutes and centers, and many of the academic faculty. it is always exciting and rewarding to know that our academic departments value and make the time to ensure that our Bobcats know they are supported by their faculty in and out of the classroom, said Iliana. KAPPA DELTA PI (KDP) KDP will host a volunteer opportunity, Day of The Dead Celebration, on Saturday, November 7. For more information contact Lucy Medina, lgm54@txstate.edu or Chris Ramstedt, chrisr@txstate.edu. WELCOME new Kappa Delta Pi members! On October 1, Mr. James Jackson, KIPP Austin College Prep Teacher and Texas State Lecturer discussed special education in a classroom environment, including the history of special education, the current state in public schools, and some future possibilities for inclusion and teaching methods. Additionally, on October 10, Ms. Jodi Brooks presented TExES tips to a group of current Texas State Education students that provided valuable information and test taking strategies.
