3 3 ITALY AND FUTURE BUSINESS LEADERS OF AMERICA Basic Facts The following statistics of Italy today should give the average traveler adequate information to become familiar with the country. 4 4 Economic Facts Exports Italy ranked 9 th in the world for its amount of exports of $ billion in It has $7, exports per capita. (See appendix 2) Agricultural Products Italy has shown little growth in the agricultural sector in recent decades. The agricultural products of sugar beets, tomatoes, and other vegetable crops have grown slightly. Italy is a major cereal-producing country, although wheat is imported. Currency Italy s unit of currency is the euro. Seventy-seven hundredths of a euro is approximately one USD. Average meals are 5 euros for a cheap meal, 15 euros for a mid-range, and 25 euros for high-end. Average room prices for lower end are 20 euros, mid-range 100 euros, and high end of 200 euros.

5 5 Travel Information Cost of Travel The mid-range daily cost of travel in Italy for one person is USD. Some of these costs include Accommodation (69.78 USD), Food (34.05 USD), Local Transportation (11.81 USD), Souvenirs (27.37 USD), and Entertainment (16.74 USD). Documentation Needed You will need your passport, itinerary, visa, travel health insurance, and declaration of presence. Safety Precautions If you travel to Italy, it is important to try to fit in, keep clear of demonstrations and related gatherings, and be alert and observant. Avoid wearing souvenir t-shirts or hats which make you stand out. Be suspicious of groups, even young children in tourist areas. Methods of Transportation Your best bet for transportation in Rome is the underground railway system which will get you to basically anywhere you need to go. The Roman Metro has three lines to take to certain areas. There is also a network of trams and buses available for use. Hotel Accommodation There are many options of hotels, such as Boscolo Exedra Roma, a five-star hotel costing about 189 USD per night. Other options include the Hotel Artemide at 123 USD per night or Hotel Campo De Fiori at 90 USD per night. Many other hotels are available, but these are the highest rated and most well-known for those who travel. Communications

6 6 Italy s official language is Italian. Ninety-three percent of the population is native Italian speakers. There are different dialects, such as Friulian spoken by 600,00 people. About 50 percent of the population speaks a regional dialect as the mother tongue. With technology advancements, phones are most definitely available as a means of communication. In addition, computers are available at specialty computer/coffee shops. Sometimes even hotels may had special accommodations for communication with access to internet through Wifi, laptop, or in-room telephones.

7 7 Culture and Customs Business Relations In addition, meeting etiquette includes greeting with enthusiasm yet formal. Handshakes with direct eye contact are appreciated. Once acquaintances are formed, air-kissing on both cheeks is appropriate. Italians prefer face-to-face contact. Take time to get to know people, and be aware that Italians are very expressive. Holidays Since Italy is a mainly Catholic religious country, Italians usually observe Christian and Catholic holidays, such as New Year s Day, Carnevale, Easter, All Saints Day, Christmas Day, etc. News Year s Day, similar to the United States, is a day observed to relax at home due to stores and restaurants and state-run attractions being closed. Carnevale is a precursor to the forty days of absintence before Easter, known as Lent. Italians indulge in sweet treats and lively parties. They wear fancy costumes and masks to celebrate through parades and parties. Etiquette Table manners are formal and polite. Sleeveless garments in churches are taboo. Always ask for your check (il conto) or else your waiter will not put a bill on your table. Smoking is banned in public establishments. Business cards are used throughout Italy.

8 8 Eating Habits General Costs Average meals are 5 euros for a cheap meal, 15 euros for a mid-range, and 25 euros for high-end. Types of Foods Many types of food are available to eat in Italy. These include pastas, pizzas, risotto, minestrone, and more. Common Foods Common foods include risotto, minestrone, zuppa di pesce, ossocbuco, scaloppini di vitello, and zuppa di cozze.

9 9 Benefit of FBLA Future Business Leaders of America can benefit the students and teachers in Italy in many ways by the following. Expansion FBLA may allow the expansion of reliable student exchange programs both for students in Italy and the United States. This may not only promote general networking and career preparation for students at a young age, but it may also promote global networking and career preparation for diverse students. Education FBLA may allow a more extensive education for both students and teachers. It would allow students to learn in more hands-on ways than may have been able to before. Investment FBLA would be an investment into the future of business and economies not only across borders but also on local levels. If the youngest generations are prepared and educated by FBLA, they could be ready for anything in the future.

10 10 FBLA-PBL Communications Facebook Facebook is a way for student to relate to other students through a variety of means. They can share ideas across borders through pictures, videos, etc. Twitter Twitter is an easy and fast way for students to stay connected to other students in an informal way. Linkedin Linkedin is a professional career-based social media website that students and adults can connect with each other to form networks and make connects for careers. 12 12 FBLA Italy Project Idea Future Business Leaders of America and Italian business students can partner with each other to promote international relations in the business world. Students may be provided with FBLA pen pals to discuss business learning projects to implement and develop. Students and teachers in Italy may be able to develop their own form of FBLA, as a form of Future Business Leaders of Italy. FBLA may be able to aid them in the creation of competitive events, awards, and scholarships to suit the area and culture.
