The No. 13 Nebraska wrestling team returns to action on Sunday, Feb. 20, for its last home dual of the season against the No. 17 Iowa State Cyclones at 2 p.m. Sunday will be a monumental day for the Nebraska wrestling program as three seniors, Andy Johnson, Mike Koehnlein and Jordan Burroughs will be honored before the match as the Huskers take part in Senior Day at the NU Coliseum. The trio has combined for four NCAA tournament bids and 190 career victories. The group is headlined by Burrouhgs, who is the school s only undefeated national champion and is currently 28-0 on the season. The dual against the Cyclones will also mark the last dual in Nebraska history as a member of the Big 12 Conference. The Huskers are set to move to the Big Ten next season. The Huskers are fresh off their 13th victory of the season where they defeated the North Carolina Tar Heels in dominating fashion, 31-6, in Chapel Hill, N.C. Leading the way for NU was sophomore Tyler Koehn and Burroughs, who both collected bonus-point victories. Koehn upset No. 20 Corey Mock (UNC) at 157-pounds by pin with: 08 remaining in the match. Burroughs was dominant in his victory over Thomas Scotton (UNC), collecting his 12th technical fall victory of the season, Admission and 24 oz. Pepsi Products will be $1 at Sunday s dual for Pepsi Pack the House Day at the NU Coliseum. The Huskers also want fans to wear their black Husker gear as we try to blackout the Cyclones. (402) Website...Huskers.com Last Time Out: Huskers Rout Tar Heels, 31-6 The No. 14 Nebraska wrestling team won the first six matches over the North Carolina Tar Heels on Saturday, Feb. 12, in route to a 31-6 victory in Chapel Hill, N.C. The Huskers, who were wrestling in their final road dual of the season, improved to 13-5 on the year with a 1-2 mark in Big 12 conference duals. The loss dropped North Carolina s record to Nebraska opened the dual with a shutout from No. 11 Josh Ihnen (NU) at 184-pounds over Antonio Giorgio (UNC), 6-0. Ihnen s victory was followed by Andy Johnson (NU) defeating Zac Bennett (UNC) by decision, 10-4, at 197. Both Ihnen and Johnson were coming off losses to nationally-ranked opponents against Oklahoma State. At heavyweight, No. 12 Tucker Lane (NU) defeated Ben Brooks (UNC) after Brooks had to withdrawal from match win an injury in the second period. Leading by 12 points, the Huskers extended the margin to 21-0 with three decision victories from David Klingsheim (NU), Ridge Kiley (NU) and Mike Koehnlein (NU). Klingsheim recorded the Huskers second shutout of the dual at 125-pounds when he defeated Jake Corrill (UNC), 6-0. At 133-pounds, Kiley defeated Pat Owens (UNC) by decision 7-1, while Koehnlein won his third straight dual after taking down Mike Rappo (UNC), The match of the day came at 157-pounds where Tyler Koehn (NU) upset No. 20 Corey Mock (UNC) by fall with :08 remaining in the final period. Trailing 3-0 entering the third period, Koehn earned an escape point to pull within two points and then turned a single-leg takedown attempt into a pin to extend the Huskers lead to The pin was Koehn s second of the season. No. 1 Jordan Burroughs (NU) recorded his 12th technical fall of the season for the Huskers last victory at 165-pounds over Thomas Scotton (UNC), Burroughs is now 28-0 on the season and 18-0 in dual competition as he continues his trek to become the school s first two-time national champion. North Carolina State Illinois 20 Nebraska Wrestling - Weekly Notes (Feb. 17, 2011) A Closer Look at the Iowa State Cyclones The No. 17 Iowa State Cyclones will enter Sunday s dual with a 9-9 record after falling to No. 18 Missouri, 23-11, in their last dual. The Cyclones began the season with four-straight dual victories over Virginia Tech, Kent State, Boston University and Old Dominion, before falling at the hands of Iowa, 22-13, for their first loss of the season. ISU responded to the loss with an eighth place finish at the National Duals with wins over Northern Illinois and American. Thy Cyclones will be looking for their first Big 12 dual victory of the season after going winless in their first four attempts. ISU has fallen to Oklahoma State twice this season after meeting them at National Duals, while falling to Oklahoma and Missouri once. Iowa State features a talented lineup with four nationally-ranked wrestlers at their respective weights. Leading the way for ISU is Jon Reader at 174-pounds. Reader, who is ranked No. 1 nationally, sports a perfect 31-0 record on the season. Other ranked wrestlers include No. 15 Chris Drouin (141), No. 7 Andrew Sorenson (165) and No. 14 Jerome Ward (197). Iowa State is coached by Kevin Jackson, who is in his second season as head coach of the Cyclones. In his first year as head coach, Jackson led ISU to a third place finish at the NCAA Championships. Husker History vs. Iowa State The Huskers and Cyclones have faced off over 100 times in their history, with Iowa State holding an advantage in the all-time series at In their last meeting, the Cyclones defeated NU, 34-7, on Feb. 21, 2010 in Ames, Iowa. Iowa State has won the past four duals against the Huskers, with NU s last win coming on Feb. 19, 2006 when Nebraska won, 22-21, over the No. 7 Cyclones. Three Seniors Set to Finish Careers on High Notes This year s senior class features three wrestlers who have combined to win 190 career matches and qualify for four NCAA tournaments. Mike Koehnlein, Andy Johnson and Jordan Burroughs will look to end their careers on a high note as they begin preparations for the Big 12 and NCAA tournaments. Jordan Burroughs, Sicklerville, N.J., 165 Burroughs 120 career victories places him No. 6 on the all-time wins and winning percentage list at NU. With 61 career victories in dual competition, Burroughs also ranks at No. 6 on the career dual wins list. Accounting for 16 victories as a freshman, Burroughs took the nation by storm as a sophomore winning 34 matches and finishing third at the NCAA Championships at 149-pounds. Burroughs followed his third place finish as a sophomore with possibly the most dominant season in school history his junior year by going 35-0 in route to becoming the school s first undefeated national champion. The two-time All-American was the Big 12 Champion in both 2008 and 2009, while being named the Outstanding Wrestler of the 2008 Big 12 Championships as a sophomore. After having his season cut short by injury as a senior, Burroughs was granted a medical-redshirt and came back even stronger this season moving up a weight class to 165. The New Jersey-native owns a perfect 28-0 record and has been dominant in dual competition, recording 123 takedowns and not giving up a single one. 4 Nebraska Wrestling Head Coach Mark Manning With 100 years of history, Nebraska wrestling is one of the most storied programs in the collegiate wrestling ranks. Head Coach Mark Manning has taken the Huskers to new heights in his tenure and has established himself as one of the top wrestling coaches in the nation. The NU record book is a testament to Manning s accomplishments in Lincoln. In his 10 years at the helm, he has coached 33 of Nebraska s 88 All-Americans. He has led the Huskers to five top-eight finishes at the NCAA Championships, compared to just eight for the 14 NU coaches before him. He is the winningest coach in Husker history with a dual-winning percentage of.704 and a record of at NU. He won back-to-back Big 12 Coachof-the-Year awards (2008 and 2009) after guiding Nebraska to a share of the conference crown in 2009 and a runner-up finish in NU went on to finish fourth at the NCAA Championships both seasons with nine Huskers earning All-America honors and Jordan Burroughs capturing the 157-pound national title with a perfect 35-0 record. In addition to their success on the mat, Husker wrestlers under Manning have earned 35 academic All-Big 12 selections (3 1/2 awards per year), including current student-athletes Tucker Lane and Josh Ihnen. The pair, in addition to 2010 seniors Craig Brester and Stephen Dwyer, were all named to the 2010 NWCA All-Academic Team, as Nebraska turned in the third highest team grade-point average (3.2824). Manning s beliefs and values in developing studentathletes is evident right outside his office, where former Husker All-Americans Bryan Snyder, Jason Powell, Craig Brester and Brandon Browne are members of the NU coaching staff. During their time under Manning, Snyder and Brester were each named the Nebraska Male Student-Athlete of the Year. Mike Koehnlein, Sr., Westminster, Calif., 141 In his first season at the Division I level, Koehnlein won 18 matches and was one of five Huskers to earn a berth in the NCAA Championships in Omaha. Koehnlein finished his junior season with one pin and two technical falls, along with four major decisions which tied him for second-most on the team. For his efforts on the mat in 2010, Koehnelin was awarded Spirit of Excellence Team Award. This season, Koehnlein has a record and is currently riding a three-match winning streak into today s dual. Earlier this season, Koehnlein was awarded the Big 12 Wrestler of the Week honor after defeating Carlos Castro from Arizona State by pin and upsetting No. 17 Josh Kindig of Oklahoma State by decision. Andy Johnson, Yankton, S.D., 197 Andy Johnson s return to the lineup this season has given the Huskers a major boost at 197-pounds. In his first three seasons at NU, Johnson accumulated 22 wins, going 4-2 in spot duty in dual matches while wrestling behind All-Americans Stephen Dwyer and Brandon Browne. This season, Johnson has surpassed his career win total with a 24-9 record and a 13-5 mark in dual competition. Johnson is third on the team with 45 dual points on the season, and ranks second on the squad in dual takedowns with 31. A three-time member of the Big 12 Commissioner s Honor Roll, Johnson has defeated three nationally-ranked opponents this year and won seven out of his last eight matches, which has helped him vault to No. 11 in the latest NCAA coaches rankings. Burroughs Looks to Cement Name in Record Books After becoming the 19th wrestler in program history to reach the 100-win mark earlier this season, Burroughs has his sights set on many of the school s all-time wrestling records as he goes after his second NCAA title. - Moved past Corey Olsen ( ) for No. 6 on the all-time victories chart with 120. Jordan Oliver (Oklahoma State) has earned his third Big 12 Wrestler of the Week honor while improving to 21-0 overall (17-0 dual) this season. The conference accolade is the fourth for the Cowboys in (Oliver - three; Jon Morrison - one). Kolb has been a steady force at 174-pounds for the Huskers, recording an 8-9 record in dual matches. In those matches, Kolb has taken his opponent down 24 times while only giving up 12 takedowns. Reader, a two-time All-American, has been dominant this season where he owns a perfect 31-0 record and an 18-0 mark in dual matches. Koehnlein Earns Big 12 Wrestler of the Week Senior Mike Koehnlein was named the Big 12 Wrestler of the Week on Monday, Feb. 7, for his performance in the Huskers duals against Arizona State and No. 5 Oklahoma State. The award was Koehnlein s first Big 12 Wrestler of the Week award in his career, and was the third time this season a Husker earned the award after Jordan Burroughs earned the honor twice earlier in the year. Koehnlein, who went 2-0 in a pair of dual matches, began the weekend by pinning Carlos Castro (ASU) in 6:20 for his first pin of the season at 141-pounds. The senior s victory helped lead the No. 14 Huskers to a 35-8 victory over Arizona State. The West Minster, Calif.-native then upset No. 17 Josh Kindig (OSU) by decision, Trailing 2-1 entering the second period, Koehnlein used two takedowns and an escape to take the lead at 7-4. Koehnlein then scored a two-point near fall in the final seconds of the match to extend his lead to 10-4 with the riding-time advantage. Koehnlein s victory marked the second nationally-ranked opponent he has defeated this season (No. 20 Kaleb Friedley, Northwestern). Huskers Place 16 on Big 12 Commissioner s Honor Roll The Nebraska wrestling team was well represented on the Big 12 Commissioner s Honor Roll for the fall 2010 semester as 16 student-athletes earned the academic award. The Big 12 Commissioner s Honor Roll recognizes student-athletes who record a 3.0 GPA or higher each semester. Nebraska had a total of 358 honorees across its 23 varsity sports, including 43 student-athletes with perfect 4.0 GPAs. Burroughs was honored on Dec. 13, 2010, and Jan. 3, Over his career, Burroughs has been named Big 12 Wrestler of the Week four times in his career. Huskers Announce Talented Signing Class Head Coach Mark Manning and the Husker wrestling program have announced the signings of four high school seniors who plan to enroll and compete at Nebraska beginning with the season. Three of the four signees are ranked in the InterMat Top 25, while the other is a two-time Nebraska Class C state champion. Three of the wrestlers have been crowned state champions at their respective high schools Nebraska Wrestling Signees (bold weights indicate projected college division) Austin Wilson, Hastings, Neb. (Hastings St. Cecilia) - 157/165 Austin Wilson will enter his senior season at Hastings St. Cecilia looking to break the all-time career victories record in Nebraska state high school history. Wilson owns a career record and would need 39 victories to break the record of 172. As a sophomore, Wilson finished the season with a perfect 47-0 record while only giving up one takedown and one reversal all season en route to the Class C state title at 130 pounds. In his junior season, the Hastings native was just as impressive, going 48-0 and only being scored on one time. Wilson s 48 victories as a junior broke an All-Class record for wins a season. Wilson is nationally-ranked as the No. 15 wrestler in his weight division according to WIN magazine. Wilson is set to wrestle at either the 157 or 165 pounds. Jake Sueflohn, Hartland, Wis., (Arrowhead) - 141/149 Jake Sueflohn has established himself as one of the best high school wrestlers in the country after winning the 2010 Wisconsin Division I state championship at 135 pounds. Sueflohn, a Harland, Wis. Native, is ranked as the No. 4 wrestler in the nation at the 140-pound weight division and is the No. 23 ranked recruit overall according to InterMat. As a freshman, Sueflohn finished third at the state championships at 119, while recording a 50-4 record. His sophomore season saw him finish in the runner-up spot at the 125-pound weight division going Sueflohn owns a career record. Sueflhon is slated to wrestle at either 141 or 149 pounds. Donny Longendyke, White Bear Lake, Minn. (White Bear Lake) - HWT Donny Longendyke will enter his senior season as one of the most dominate heavyweights in the country after going 47-0 as a junior, while recording 39 pins en route to the Minnesota Class AAA state championship. In his sophomore season, Longendyke recorded a 39-2 mark and a second place finish at the state championships. Longendyke was the No. 2 rated heavyweight recruit in the country according to InterMat, and the No. 25 overall prospect in the country. This summer, Longendyke was most impressive at the USA Wrestling National Championships in Fargo, N.D., where he placed in all five events he entered and earned a spot in the finals twice. Longendyke will wrestle at the Heavyweight spot for the Huskers. James Green, Willingboro, N.J. (Willingboro) James Green will join the Husker wrestling program after accumulating over 100 victories in his first three seasons at Willingboro (N.J.) High School. As a junior, Green finished his junior season with a 35-2 record and a second place finish at the state championships. Green is considered one of the top recruits in the country and is ranked as the No. 22 overall prospect by InterMat. The Willingboro, N.J. native is the 2nd-ranked wrestler at the 145-pound

Four-Time All-American Snyder Returns as Assistant Coach The Nebraska wrestling team announced this offseason the return and addition of one of the most decorated student-athletes in program history, as Bryan Snyder was named an assistant coach for the Huskers Over the summer, The only four-time All-American and four-time conference champion in school history, Snyder comes back to the Husker wrestling program in its 100th anniversary season. The Easton, Pa., native spent last year as the head assistant coach at Arizona State and helped guide five Sun Devils to the 2010 NCAA Championships in Omaha. Snyder began his coaching experience as an assistant at Harvard in , while returning to the Husker wrestling program as a graduate assistant coach for two seasons ( and ), as NU went in duals and finished fifth at the 2004 NCAA Championships. As a wrestler, Snyder ranks No. 1 on Nebraska s all-time winning percentage chart (.925), compiling a record from He claimed All-America accolades and a Big 12 championship all four years, while finishing as the NCAA runner-up at 157 pounds in 2001 and He amassed over 30 wins per season three times, including his 43-3 record as a sophomore that stands as the second-best single-season mark in school history. A four-time NWCA All-Academic selection, Snyder was named the 2002 Nebraska Male Student-Athlete of the Year and graduated with a double major in Sociology and Communication Studies. Brester, Brown Join NU Coaching Staff Two recent NU All-Americans will add further experience and knowledge to the Husker wrestling coaching staff as Nebraska announced the additions of volunteer assistant Brandon Browne and administrative assistant Craig Brester. Along with coach Bryan Snyder, the three new hires combined to win 87 percent of their matches and earn eight All-America honors during their Husker careers. Browne will be in his second year with the Huskers after serving as the team s club coach last year. A native of Plattsmouth, Neb., Browne won back-to-back Big 12 championships at 174 pounds in 2008 and Brester will be the most recent face on the NU staff and serve the role of administrative assistant. The Howells, Neb., native finished his career this past March with his second-straight NCAA runner-up finish at 197 pounds. Through four years, Brester produced a record and ranks with the eight-best winning percentage (.838) in school history. Huskers Look Forward to Hendricks Training Complex The Nebraska wrestling program will be experiencing some major facility improvements in the near future, starting with the addition of the Hendricks Training Complex. The Hendricks Training Complex, which will provide three full-sized practice mats, new office suites and new areas for both strength and conditioning and athletic medicine at the Bob Devaney Sports Center, is currently under construction. The new practice facility will be open for student-athletes at Nebraska beginning in the season - the same year the Huskers are scheduled to begin competition in the Big Ten Conference. In addition to the new practice and training facility, the Husker men s and women s basketball teams will move into a new home in with the addition of a new downtown arena.
