3 The Staff This season, OU will have to overcome departed seniors to be successful. Gone are four-time All-American and three-time Big 12 champion Sam Hazewinkel and 2007 Big 12 champion Matt Storniolo. The Sooners also lost a major contributor to last year s squad in Shane Seibert. The newcomers will attempt to mesh with key several Sooners still on the squad. Joel Flaggert, a two-time All-American, returns for the Sooners in the 197 pound weight class. To combat the exit of several key performers, OU wrestling welcomed one of the largest classes ever to the program this season. Ten new Sooners started practice and quickly challenged for starting spots on the squad. Our recruiting classes aren t usually this large, and there is a good possibility that several of these guys will wind up in the starting lineup, Head Coach Jack Spates said. We have signed guys who are extremely capable of contributing right away and put us in a position of a bright future. Flaggert s return is a major victory for the season before it even begins, according to Spates. It was really importart for him and for the team, he said. Obviously, a two-time All-American is a very special wrestler, and it is an indication how talented and tough Joel Flaggert is. Spates said he thinks there is one deciding factor that led Flaggert to return. Home of Seven National Championships The Sooner recruiting effort went coast-to-coast, signing state champions from California to Pennsylvania. The 10-member class combined for 15 state championships. History Oklahoma wrestling looks forward to living up to high expectations for the season, and continuing to establish the team as one of the nation s elite programs Review Our coaching staff has refocused and re-evaluated everything. Our guys have responded with a work ethic that is probably the best since I have been here. -Head Coach Jack Spates The Sooners SEASON PREVIEW 11
4 Sooner Wrestling 256 All-Americans 65 Individual National Championships 21 Conference Team Championships 171 Individual Conference Champions 12 The sky is the limit for Joel. He is capable of being on top of the stand, and I think that is why he came back because he wants to be there. The Sooners also return multiple wrestlers who were staples in the lineup last season, which gives the team experience and leadership. OU returns five 2007 NCAA qualifiers in Max Dean, Kyle Terry, Will Rowe, Josh Weitzel and Flaggert. Spates believes the returning wrestlers, mixed with an extremely talented recruiting class, will create a successful formula for the season. I think we have good balance, Spates said. We are going have as many as six to seven freshmen or sophomores in our lineup. We have great leadership and good expereince in our seniors to balance that.. After finishing fifth last season in the Big 12, Spates said the team will be prepared to once again battle for a championship title. Everyone has responded in a winning way to last year s disappointment, he said. Our coaching staff has refocused and reevaluated everything. Our guys have responded with a work ethic that is probably the best since I have been here. Spates will not shy away from talking championships with this squad, and will welcome talk of his Sooner wrestlers returning to the podium. We will have three senior leaders in Josh, Joel and Max Dean coming in, he said. All three of those guys are capable of being on the stand, with Joel having been there twice already. OU wrestlers are going to be a talented and aggressive group on the mat, but Spates said team chemistry is going to be a vital key to the success this team will have. He pointed out the grueling nature of the sport and the need for team unity. It is something very imporant to us, Spates said. Our captains Josh (Weitzel) and Will (Rowe) are committed to developing it. Above all, Coach Spates said the opportunity to coach a group like this is exciting. The guys we have and the guys we brought in have exceptional drive and determination, he said. This is going to be a young group, but their aggressiveness and love for the sport is going to make this a great group to coach. Coach Spates Weight-By-Weight Breakdown 125 Pounds Favorite Contenders: Anthony Hayes, Joey Fio, Greg Cannon The loss of our four-year starter and four-time All-American Sam Hazewinkel to graduation has left a gaping void, which looks to be filled by a true or redshirt freshman. But these freshmen are talented and determined. Washington State Champion Anthony Hayes has a year in the room and might have a slight edge. He is a hard worker, a great thrower and a tough competitor. Two-time Idaho titlist Joey Fio is an excellent athlete and a tireless worker. These two will push each other to great heights. Also challenging will be two-time Oklahoma crown winner, Greg Cannon. Small but tough, Greg has his sights set on the starting slot. This weight is a question mark for the Sooners but one in which we think they have an answer Wrestling Media Guide 133 Pounds Favorite: Brian Shelton Contenders: J.R. Roman, Johnny Starzyk Brian Shelton s size and inexperience played a big part last year after being cast into the starting line-up at 133 lbs. as a true freshman. Now a year bigger and stronger, he is looking to show why he was a two-time state champion and high school All-American. Challenging him will be spot starter J.R. Roman who worked diligently through the spring and summer, along with three-time Illinois state champion Johnny Starzyk. Johnny set the Illinois state record for pins en route to garnering his titles and recorded six pins in capturing the most falls award at the high school nationals. This will be another young but promising weight for the Sooners. 141 Pounds Favorite: Kyle Terry Contenders: Zach Bailey, Nolan Spring This is a third straight weight where a freshman or sophomore will lead the Sooners. Sophomore Kyle Terry leads the way after beating two All-Americans and placing third in the Big 12 as a freshman. Kyle s progress as a freshman was remarkable and he continues to improve as he works both hard and smart. Only injury can keep Zach Bailey from greatness. Shoulder surgeries have slowed him down but he has worked feverishly to battle back. A four-time state champion and junior national titlist, Zach is as quick and explosive as they come. Junior Nolan Spring will also challenge in a weight where the Sooners hope to come home with All-America honors. The ever faithful Trey Blakely has put in three solid years of work and can always be counted on both on and off the mat. 149 Pounds Favorite: Will Rowe Contenders: Chad Terry, Seth Vernon The graduation of two-time All-American Matt Storniolo allows the talented and determined Will Rowe to drop to his true weight. A two-time national qualifier at 157 pounds, Will Rowe should be on the podium at the NCAAs wrestling opponents his size. Will is a brilliant technician who is always looking to improve. Redshirt sophomore Chad Terry will certify at 149 but may challenge at a higher weight. A state champion and twin brother of Kyle, Chad has made big strides and may be ready for prime time. Three-time Oklahoma state champion Seth Vernon has all the tools and a tremendous passion to succeed as well. He is slotted for redshirt, but will soon make his mark. Former Texas titlist Matt Sansone, coming off a medical redshirt, is working hard and is eager to contribute. 157 Pounds Favorite: Shane Vernon Contenders: Chad Terry, Blake Allen, Brent Rogers Redshirt sophomore Shane Vernon leads the way at 157 pounds. A part-time starter as a true freshman, Shane has lots of skills and seems to have made big strides since then. His biggest challenge may come from the talented Chad Terry should he decide to compete at this weight. Vernon, a former three-time Oklahoma state champion, has already made his mark by beating several nationally ranked wrestlers. A pair of two-time state champions will also challenge in Oklahoma s Blake Allen and Texas titlist Brent Rogers. Blake is a tough mat wrestler while Brent is an agile and skilled technician.
5 Heavyweight Favorite: Max Dean Contenders: Ryan Smith, Jake Jackson, Chris DeVilbiss Favorites: Brad Farmer, Nathan Fernandez Contenders: Luis Hernandez Last year s starter Shane Siebert is now in Chiropractic School but another transfer has stepped in and looks to make a big mark. Coming from Indiana University, Max Dean qualified for Nationals three times but looks to step up to the stand this year. An MBA student, Max is an extremely powerful and well-positioned grappler who is working to score more. This is a weight in which Sooners need someone to step up to the big time. Last year s starter, Brad Farmer, shows an improved determination. Redshirt freshman Nathan Fernandez demonstrated sparks of greatness by placing in both the University Nationals and FILA World Team Trials, but must show that he can parlay his freestyle prowess into collegiate success. He will be hard pressed by three-time Oregon state champion Ryan Smith who has improved greatly in just a short time. Also battling for the position will be a pair of former state champions in juniors Jake Jackson and Chris DeVilbiss. Both are talented and tough wrestlers. This is another weight where the Sooners are capable of All-America honors but must step up and make it happen. Florida matman Luis Hernandez works very hard and is making strides to be among the Sooner wrestlers competing for the heavyweight starting spot. The progress and performance of these grapplers may well determine the success of this year s team. 174 Pounds Favorite: Jeff James Contenders: Steve Nijoka, Cody Lowe 184 Pounds Favorite: Joshua Weitzel Contenders: Pat Flynn, Josh Hinton 197 Pounds Two-time All-American Joel Flaggert returns with a passion to redeem himself after failing to place last year. An extremely explosive grappler with great leg attacks, Joel has worked hard to make himself a threat on the mat as well as on his feet. There s no question that a national title is within his reach. Another talented worker with a tireless work ethic is redshirt sophomore Eric Lapotsky. A Bucknell transfer, Lapotsky served notice that he belongs in the big time by upsetting NCAA #1 seed Max Askren last year. Eric is extremely dangerous on top and continues to improve his takedown skills. Former Texas champion Matt Cole has made amazing strides and looks to throw his hat in the ring as does former two-time Oklahoma crown winner, Eugene Young. Both are long, lanky and dangerous competitors. This looks to be a tough and deep weight for the Crimson. Home of Seven National Championships Favorite: Joel Flaggert Contenders: Eric Lapotsky, Matt Cole, Eugene Young History Challenging Joshua will be former Pennsylvania standout Pat Flynn. A Lehigh transfer who had a strong redshirt year as a 197 pounder, Pat is a dangerous grappler who looks to have a big future. The move to 184 pounds should make him all the more formidable. Last years starter Josh Hinton, a winner of 20 matches, will also be a factor. Josh improved significantly last year and shows a lot of ability Review Since transferring from the University of Michigan, Josh Weitzel has made huge strides. After completing a.500 record as a Wolverine, Josh recorded a 28-9 mark and went to the All-America round in his inaugural campaign as a Sooner. Joshua is among the hardest and smartest workers on the team and the move up to 184 pounds should help him and the team. The Sooners The young grapplers -- North Carolina s Cody Lowe and Texas champion Steve Nijoka -- working to make the weight and secure some action in the lineup. Obviously, this is another young weight, but one in which the prospects are bright. 125 Joey Fio 133 Brian Shelton 141 Kyle Terry 149 Will Rowe 157 Shane Vernon 165 Max Dean 174 Jeff James 184 Josh Weitzel 197 Joel Flaggert HWT. Nathan Fernandez The Staff Another talented freshman looks to be the man in El Reno, Okla. native Jeff James. A former two-time high school champion, Jeff s relentless work ethic paid big dividends last season. He won several tournaments and placed in every one, including the University Nationals and FILA World Team Trials. With continued improvement, All-America honors are not out of the question. Projected starters weight-by-weight 165 Pounds 13
