2 256 All-Americans 65 Individual national Champions 23 Conference Titles SEASON REVIEW Review Two Sooners crowned Big 12 Champs, eight qualify for NCAA Championships The University of Oklahoma wrestling squad tallied a 16-4 overall record in 2009, its most victories in seven seasons in head coach Jack Spates 16th season at the helm. It also marked the 14th-straight season Spates led the Sooners to at least 10 wins. In OU s second dual of the season against Oklahoma City, the Sooner head coach picked up his 200th career victiory in Norman. The Sooners bounced two Intermat Top 25 opponents throughout the season, including their in-state rival Oklahoma State on Dec. 7, marking the second consecutive victory against the Cowboys for the first time since Oklahoma climbed to No. 10 in the national polls on Jan. 6, its highest team Media Guide ranking since the season. Throughout the season, Sooner grapplers defeated 26 individual opponents ranked in the top 20. Additionally, seven Oklahoma wrestlers finished the season with 20 or more victories. The team impressively went 15-0 against nonconference foes during the regular season, and won its 10th-straight first place crown over a talented field at the Brockport/Oklahoma Gold Classic. Eight Sooners earned gold medal finishes at the Oklahoma Open on Nov. 29. The Sooner squad finished the regular season with two wrestlers ranked in the top eight in their respective weight classes and seven total in the top 20.

3 BIG 12 CHAMPIONSHIPS Overall, the Sooners advanced eight wrestlers to the NCAA Championships from the Big 12 held in Lincoln, Neb., on March 7. Joey Fio and Kyle Terry both lived up to their No. 1 seeds, as both posted 2-0 records on the day to earn their first career conference titles. Inside the historic NU Coliseum, the duo improved Spates Big 12 individual champion tally to 27. Fio picked up wins versus Andy Pokorny of Nebraska and No. 8 Tyler Clark of Iowa State and Terry posted victories over Luke Silver of Oklahoma State and No. 18 Mitch Mueller of Iowa State. It marked the ninth time in 12 seasons the Sooners posted multiple champions. With the gold medals, the two automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships. Earning a third place medal and a spot in the 2009 NCAA was the three seed Pat Flynn, who bounced back from an opening round loss to post back-toback pins over Dorian Henderson of Missouri and Chris McNeil of Oklahoma State. Additionally, three other Sooners Ryan Smith, Eric Lapotsky and Nathan Fernandez -- advanced to the national championship under the new selection criteria instituted in On March 11, Jeff James and Chad Terry were also chosen as atlarge selections to the NCAA. Oklahoma took fifth place at the conference championship with 38.5 team points. For the first time in the history of the conference, Nebraska and Iowa State shared first place with 70 points. Missouri claimed third (55 points) and Oklahoma State (40) finished fourth. 4Jeff James stands on the podium at the 2009 Big 12 Championships. NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS Of the eight qualifying Sooners, three Fio, Kyle Terry and Lapotsky fell one victory short of All- America status at the 2009 NCAA Championships inside the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Mo, going 2-2 overall against competition. Also recording a victory at the national tournament were Chad Terry, Jeff James, Flynn and Hernandez. Oklahoma tallied 19 team points to finish 31st overall. Kyle Terry built his winning streak to 28 straight matches before it was halted by No. 1 seed Brent Metcalf of Iowa. Fio improved his winning streak to 16 matches before the Sacramento, Calif., native fell to the No. 2 seed, Troy Nickerson of Cornell in the quarterfinals. Notching victories over top 10 seeds were Fio (beat No. 10 Scotti Sentes of Central Michigan), Fernandez (No. 10 Ryan Flores of Columbia) and Kyle Terry (No. 8 Matthew Kyler of Army). 3Kyle Terry took home the gold medal at 149 pounds at the 2009 Big 12 Championships.
