7 Dr. Joseph D. Greene Cree Walker Professor and Associate Professor of Management Augusta State University In 1959, Joseph D. Greene left the cotton fields of rural Georgia with $35, a high school education, and his uncle s good advice. There is no T in can t only can, became a motivating philosophy that guided him on his life s journey, leading to success in his business and personal life. That journey is recounted in his recently-released book, From Cotton Fields to Board Rooms. In the book, Mr. Greene, now the Cree Walker Professor of Business Administration at Augusta State University, discusses his life on the farm and how he rose from his first job in door-to-door insurance sales to become a member of its senior management team. His life s journey would lead him to college classrooms, corporate board rooms, and civic leadership, which often placed him in the category of firsts. He was among the first African Americans to graduate from a predominately white college and later join its faculty, the first African American elected to public office in McDuffie County, the first to sit on the boards of at least a dozen organizations, the first to lead the state s Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia, and among the firsts in his family who would survive cancer. He credits his success to his uncle s sage advice, and says that passing it on through his book will hopefully inspire others to look at their own lives and ask if they have done everything they can to pursue their own dreams. In addition to teaching at ASU, Mr. Greene conducts financial planning workshops, publishes articles on finance and economics, and presents motivational seminars. He is the author of Money Matters and is currently a director of the Georgia Council on Economic Education. Mr. Greene serves as the president-elect of the Rotary Club of Augusta and as president of Greene Financial Group. He sits on the boards of First Bank of Georgia, Healthcare Georgia Foundation, St. Joseph Hospital, the CSRA Community Foundation, and the National Science Center Discovery. Before joining Augusta State, Mr. Greene served as executive vice president and chief marketing officer for the Pilgrim Life Insurance Company. He received a bachelor s degree from Augusta State University and a master s degree from the University of Georgia.
8 Mr. Gene Norman Chief Meteorologist and Certified Broadcast Meteorologist, CBS 46 News For CBS 46 News Chief Meteorologist, Gene Norman, there is nothing more interesting than the way a really good thunderstorm can crackle through the sky, shaking the windows and turning night to day. A transplanted New Yorker, he comes to the Atlanta market by way of Houston, Texas. In Houston, he spent eight years working for NASA developing software for a computer that monitors the weather for the Space Shuttle. He decided to make a demo tape and try to land a job as a TV Meteorologist. He made the move from space shuttle to local forecasts in 1993, when he began moonlighting in nearby Beaumont, Texas. When Gene became a regular on the weekend newscast for the ABC affiliate in Houston in 1995, he worked with producers to develop human-interest, weather-related stories. He braved hurricanes to report live from the seashore during torrential rains and high surfs and weeded through tornado-ravished neighborhoods to bring the story to his community. Gene arrived in Atlanta in time to suit up in bulky winter gear to cover the city s historic Ice Storm an assignment he found great fun! As Chief Meteorologist for the station, he has instituted Stormtracker46, a state-of- the-art forecasting system that predicts storms down to neighborhood and even street level. Gene holds a Bachelor s degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Master s degree in Meteorology from the University of Maryland. He has earned numerous awards including the Emmy for Outstanding Weathercast in 2001 and 2003 and Best Weathercast from the Georgia Associated Press in He is the only Certified Broadcast Meteorologist on Atlanta TV. That designation comes from the American Meteorological Society, where Gene is a member as well as a member of the Broadcast Board. He is also a member of the National Weather Association. When he s not studying isobars or plotting the progress of the next Storm of the Century, Gene enjoys spending time with his family, enjoys good music, especially gospel, R&B or jazz. In his rare afternoon off, you re likely to find him at the movies. Gene volunteers for the Metro Atlanta March of Dimes, the United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta and visits metro schools bringing weather safety tips to students of all ages. He s a popular figure with young and old alike. Look for him in your neighborhood soon either with Stormtracker46 or in person.

11 A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE MINORITY ADVISING PROGRAM AND THE MINORITY RECRUITMENT PLAN The Minority Advising Program and the Minority Recruitment plan was established in 1983 to address the specific problems faced by minority students within the University System of Georgia that affect their recruitment and retention. Originally, the Minority Advising Program and the Minority Recruitment Plan were a part of the 1983 Addendum to the 1978 Desegregation Plan. After the University system of Georgia was relieved of reporting to the Office of Civil Rights in , the Minority Advising Program and the Minority Recruitment Plan continued, as a System effort, to promote the recruitment and retention of minority students. In 1986, the MAP Coordinators developed a direct linkage with the Minority Recruitment Officers (MRO) to design and develop a consolidated MAP/MRO annual conference. This conference presented the first system-wide effort to provide professional staff development, improve program success strategies, and general information sharing in the area of minority student recruitment and retention. In 1988, the program was reaffirmed and its continuation was recommended as a part of the University s Systems Steering Committee for Increased Minority Participation in Public Higher Education. Each system institution has a program intended to supplement not replace, normal advising activities. The program targets freshmen and sophomores, but is open to all minority students who feel they can benefit from the program. As part of steering committee recommendations, each institution was given authority to structure its program in the manner that best met the specific needs of the institution. Even though the structural features of the program may change, each institution is expected to maintain the overall goals of the Minority Advising Program and the Minority Recruitment Plan. Additionally, the institutions were given the flexibility of having the Minority Advising Program report to the Office of Academic Affairs, or have a formal liaison with the Office of Academic Affairs. During fiscal year 1991, to show its continued commitment to Minority Advising, the Central Office provided supplemental funding to each institution. These funds were designated to supplement existing institutional funds, which would further enhance the University System s goals for the Minority Advising Program on each campus. This is the tenth year that each institution received supplemental funding. One of the most important events in the history of MAP/MRO programs occurred in 1992 with the inclusion of the Minority Advising Program guidelines in the Academic Affairs Handbook of the University System of Georgia. This is significant because these guidelines serve as a policy and reference for institutional representatives having responsibilities for designing, implementing and evaluating their institutional Minority Advising Program. As the University System of Georgia continues to evolve in this new millennium, enhancing already effective Minority Advising Programs and Minority Recruitment Plans will be critical to the development of strategies to recruit and retain minority students. MAP/MRO Coordinators will share a major role in enhancing and promoting the success of these programs.
