4 Highlighting New Bursaries Kelly and George Badanai Family Bursary Creating the Kelly and George Badanai Family Fund is another in the long line of philanthropic gifts the couple has given to their beloved community. The owners of Badanai Motors they have taken the company Mission Statement remaining a socially responsible member of the community to heart by investing in causes that resonate with their family. They have created a TBCF Bursary for St. Ignatius students as their son Spencer is a graduate who is a director/videographer and their daughter Neave is currently there. We are a community oriented family and the TBCF is a great vehicle for giving back said George. Susan Cochran Simonsen Bursary for Aboriginal Students When the Thunder Bay Community Foundation (TBCF) was formed in 1971, Sue Cochran Simonsen became a founding member. Sue was invited to attend the graduation ceremony at Dennis Franklin Cromarty High School and gained an insight into the amazing Aboriginal culture through the stirring drumming and singing of the ceremony as well as through the pride of the parents and community as they celebrated the achievements of their young graduates. It was then that Sue fully realized the chasm between the Aboriginal culture and the mainstream Canadian culture and that for the future of Canadian Society to advance, this separation had to be understood. As a retired educator, Sue had witnessed the many doors that had opened up to young people as they became transformed by education. Sue knew that the misunderstandings between the cultures could only be breached by education on both sides. She was determined to contribute in some way so that young Aboriginal Graduates. As such, Sue established the Susan Cochran Simonsen Bursary for Aboriginal Students. Highlighting Existing Scholarships Shirely H. & Meredith O. 5 Speakers Past Recipient Representative Alexandra Valcourt, past recipient of the Roy Seymour Rogers and Geraldine Ruth Rogers Scholarships (2013) spoke to our highly motivated recipients. She gave advice for their future schooling career, shared her experiences and motivated the whole audience with her moving words. Current Recipient Representative Riley Yesno (St. Patrick High School), recipient of the Joshua Dyke Family Scholarship represented the current scholarship and bursary recipients. Although she could not be with us that evening, her mother, Kim Bevilacqua, share Riley s touching (and very humourous) words with us. Riley thanked TBCF donors, the Marking Committee, families, friends, teachers, mentors and all those that provided support to our very thankful recipients. Marking Committee Thank you to the Scholarship and Bursary Marking Committee on behalf of the Board of Trustees of the Thunder Bay Community Foundation. This committee has the challenge of reading all the applications we receive and choosing the recipients. With so many wonderful applicants, this is one of the most difficult roles in the Foundation. Your hard work and dedication is very much appreciated by the donors, board, staff and all our supporters.
