3 International Leadership Development Programme (ILDP) Alumni reaches 236 I believe that competition in education should be mediated and collaboration should be encouraged as this will benefit the industry immensely. Our role in this Programme is to build leaders who will then contribute in building their organisations. After completion of the Programme, delegates have a huge responsibility to shape their organisations and the industry at large, said Prof Foster-Pedley. Mr Zukile Mvalo delivered the key note address and commended the W&RSETA for the ILDP which was contributing immensely to the transformation of the Sector. DHET DDG Mr Zukile Mvalo delivering the key note address In order for the country to have a viable and radical economy we need to invest in our leaders through programmes such as the ILDP. We are pleased to see the employers taking part in these programmes because skills development is key in growing the economy of the country. I am certain that our graduates are well aware that they now have a massive role to play by ensuring that they contribute to their organisations and the industry as a whole, said Mr. Mvalo. The Chairman of the Soweto Business Access, Mr Mphuthi Mphuthi delivered a message of support and encouraged graduates to be agents of change in the industry. He also encouraged large retailers to contribute to Small Medium Enterprise businesses in the townships. Today I am a better person, a better manager and a better leader than I was before I went into the ILDP -Thabang Khuzwayo 2015 ILDP Henley Graduate. The International Leadership Development Programme is an intensive action learning programme which exposes high potential executives from across the Wholesale and Retail Sector to co-learn in both South Africa and GIBS top Action Learning Project syndicate internationally. With a focus on personal and professional development, participants are heavily immersed in in-market experiences to accelerate their business insights and learn directly from global business leaders. The ILDP creates opportunities for participants to function more effectively in team settings, as well as research and make recommendations on a strategic industry challenge. Copies of the research reports and presentations on the ALPs are available from Top Action Learning Project syndicate from Henley Business School receiving their awards W&RSETA Acting CEO, Mr Andile Sipengane 3
4 The W&RSETA opens the doors of learning to the disadvantaged Nelson Mandela once said Education is a powerful weapon which you can use to change the world This profound statement has found resonance in the life of a young man who was born and bred in a poor family background. Samkelo Madlanga who was raised by a single parent did not allow his background to determine his future. Instead, he was motivated to change that situation by using education as a weapon. Samkelo enrolled for a National Diploma in Consumer Science: Food Nutrition at the Walter Sisulu University in 2011 with the assistance from a local pastor and his uncle before securing funding from the W&RSETA. On completion of his Diploma, Samkelo went on to further his B-Tech Degree at Durban University of Technology through the W&RSETA Bursary Scheme. The dedicated Samkelo passed his research project with distinction under the topic: Fat Intake and Nutrition Status of Taxi Drivers in Durban. In the beginning of 2016, he was approached by the University to study towards a Masters Degree focusing on the same research topic. Samkelo has approached various organisations to fund his Masters Degree. In every platform I get to talk to people, I don t forget to thank the W&RSETA for Samkelo Madlanga what they have done in my life and I encourage other students to apply for their bursaries. My wish is to get a job so that I can assist others who are going through the same rough road I went through. I want to change our country and society with the knowledge the university has imparted on me. Thank you Wholesale and Retail SETA, said Samkelo. 4 W&RSETA - NEWSLETTER
