tackling the tides of change We are unwavering in our commitment to be there for our partners and customers to deliver on our promise. Regardless of the unpredictable tides, our people are committed to staying the course with passion, purpose, courage and creativity; navigating challenging straits with skills and experience honed through the decades.
4 Fish Unloaded : Unboxed : Uncanned GROUP CHAIRMAN S MESSAGE 2016 was a year beset with pivotal events that shook the geopolitical, social, economic and digital fabric of nations. Destabilising factors came in various forms, including the heightened unrest in the Middle East and other parts of the world, weakened oil prices globally, the United Kingdom s decision to exit from the European Union and changes in the U.S. political leadership which could raise the spectre of protectionism and slow down global trade. It did not help that the world was still recovering from the protracted economic woes in Europe and a lacklusture China which had lost much of its steam as the world s growth engine. Against this backdrop, the container shipping industry rode through a tumultuous period. Faced with softening trade and demand, the industry was buffeted with excess shipping capacity and depressed freight rates. The prolonged downturn took its toll, routing the financial performance of many, forcing others to merge or form mega alliances, and leading to the collapse of a major shipping carrier. We are thankful, given these challenges, that our global PSA team pulled through admirably to achieve a set of creditable results. The PSA worldwide portfolio of terminals (including Singapore) handled 67.6 million TEUs, an increase of 5.5% over The better throughput performance was attributed primarily to PSA terminals outside Singapore, which recorded a volume increase of 10.6% to 37.0 million TEUs. PSA Singapore also held its ground well to contribute 30.6 million TEUs. Group revenue increased by 3% to S$3.68 billion and net profit dipped 7.5% to S$1.17 billion. Let me thank our customers and partners for their continued and unwavering trust and confidence in PSA. It is through their patronage that we have the opportunity to serve, and their demands inspire us to continually improve and be more competitive. Indeed, we continue to invest in new state-of-the-art facilities to better serve our customers. PSA Singapore s Pasir Panjang Terminal is about midway in completing its Phases 3 and 4 expansion of a total of 15 mega berths. We added 500 metres of new berth at Mersin International Port in Turkey which can handle the biggest container vessel plying the oceans today. We also started up operations in two facilities, namely New Priok Container
PSA International Pte Ltd Annual Report Terminal One in Jakarta, Indonesia, and in Sociedad Puerto Industrial Aguadulce in Buenaventura, Colombia. Our game-changing Bharat Mumbai Container Terminal in west coast India is in the midst of intensive construction and will be operational by the end of the year. We are excited that these facilities provide our customers with more choices even as they reconfigure their services amid the unparalleled and ongoing industry consolidation. Besides hardware, PSA continues to invest in software and heartware the systems, processes, our people, and our working relationship with our unions and suppliers. Together, this is the PSA formula that delivers consistently high quality services and we are heartened that our efforts had not gone unnoticed by the industry. PSA was once again voted Best Global Container Terminal Operating Company at the second Asian Freight, Logistics & Supply Chain Awards. PSA Singapore was also awarded the Best Container Terminal Asia (over 4 million TEUs) for the second consecutive year at the same event, and the Sea Port Operator of the Year title for the ninth time at the Supply Chain Asia Awards. PSA s commitment to achieve excellence was also recognised at our other terminals. In India, PSA SICAL was named the Container Handling Terminal of the Year at the 8 th South East CEO Conclave and Awards 2016 while Incheon Container Terminal garnered the Gold Award at Korea Logistics Frontier Award for its contributions towards the city s port development. Beyond the corporate front, as a socially conscientious organisation, we continue to demonstrate our support for the communities and the places which host our terminal facilities. In 2016, we worked collaboratively with our partners St Luke s Eldercare, HCA Hospice Care, National University Health System and Lions Befrienders to ramp up and broaden our range of activities for the PSA Health@ Home program, which started in 2015 to encourage staff volunteerism and support home-based healthcare for the elderly, chronically ill or infirm. Resultantly, we now have almost 300 Singapore-based staff on board the scheme. Concurrently, in Singapore, PSA continued to support deserving students from low-income households through the Howe Yoon Chong PSA scholarships, to enable them to pursue further education. We also donated to AWWA, whose community-based programs reach people across all ages, and supported Asian Civilisations Museum s exhibition Port Cities: Multicultural Emporiums of Asia to promote awareness of the importance of trading activities to port cities growth and development. The New Belgica social project, which PSA Antwerp championed, also continued to provide valuable training and employment opportunities to young people through exposing them to the building of the museum replica of the original Belgica sailing vessel constructed in We also did our part for the environment by joining hands for the third consecutive year with other marine terminal operators, to tackle environmental concerns through engaging in a diverse array of Go Green activities; ranging from conservation of the ecosystem, through planting trees and mangroves, releasing crabs back into their natural habitat, cleaning up of work and public areas such as terminals, offices, local parks and beaches, as well as recycling projects in offices around the world. The fortnight-long engagement saw the planting of 1,286 seedlings and the collection of 39 tons of used items for recycling. We would not have been able to accomplish so many things in this eventful year 2016 without the exemplary leadership of the management, the generous support of the unions and the cheerful dedication of each and every one of our staff. Their collective and committed efforts had enabled PSA to effectively navigate the tides of change and remain resilient. My deepest gratitude also goes out to the PSA International Board of Directors. Their strong stewardship and keen insights, borne out of decades of professional experience and global exposure, had been instrumental in guiding our efforts on initiatives that will cement our future-readiness and inspire confidence among our various stakeholders will likely be another year fraught with uncertainties. The prospect for global trade suffered a major setback when the United States pulled out of the Trans-Pacific Partnership. Many megaships, ordered some years ago, will roll off the shipyard, adding to container shipping capacity. Elections in several major countries, including France and Germany, and Britain s exit from the European Union, whether graceful or otherwise, will influence the sentiments in politics, commerce and banking around the world. I believe the darkest hour in the night is just before the coming of dawn. Thus, we enter 2017 with a positive frame of mind and a quest for opportunities. PSA is firmly committed to work alongside our stakeholders to provide the very best-in-class service that we have become renowned for. Together, we will continue to strive to ensure goods flow smoothly through the global maritime supply chain to touch and improve the lives of many. FOCK SIEW WAH Group Chairman
6 Fish Unloaded : Unboxed : Uncanned GROUP CEO S MESSAGE 2016 served up another unrelenting year for the port and shipping industry. Besides being burdened with prolonged sluggish global trade, sustained low commodity prices, excess liner shipping capacity and depressed freight rates, the industry also had to deal with a deluge of megaships and an unprecedented scale of consolidation through alliancing and merger of major shipping lines. Against this unsettling landscape, the Group achieved positive throughput growth of 5.5% over the year before, handling 67.6 million TEUs of containers at our port terminals around the world. Our flagship PSA Singapore contributed 30.6 million TEUs (a decrease of 0.1% year-onyear) while PSA terminals outside Singapore handled 37.0 million TEUs (posting an increase of 10.6% as compared to 2015). I would like to thank all our customers for their decision to grow their business with PSA. I am also grateful to all our external stakeholders, including partners, port and customs authorities and suppliers; without them playing their roles professionally and collaboratively, PSA would have been unable to carry on our business. Our industry today is a vastly different one from a few years ago and will continue to evolve quickly, propelled by changing manufacturing practices, shifting trade patterns and transportation alternatives, and enabling technologies. PSA holds steadfast to and will continue to expand its core container handling business. However, we also keep a watchful eye and ready ourselves for the port and logistics industry of the future through the application of technology and the emphasis on innovation. At PSA Singapore, Phases 3 and 4 of Pasir Panjang Terminal (PPT) stayed on schedule with six berths already on-stream by end 2016 and a total of 15 berths by this year. Twentytwo Automated Guided Vehicles will join the existing eight to undergo trials at the PSA Living Lab in preparation for full scale automation in the Tuas mega port at the beginning of the next decade. At PSA Antwerp, Belgium, the historic relocation of MSC PSA European Terminal s services from Delwaidedock to Deurganckdock was successfully completed in December In Genoa, Italy, the installation of eight 25-row gooseneck quay cranes at PSA Voltri-Prà Terminal makes it the only terminal operator in the North Tyrrhenian region capable of serving multiple mega vessels simultaneously. Three key PSA facilities became operational in The first phase of East Med Hub expansion in Mersin Port, Turkey added a 500-metre mega berth with four large quay cranes. Sociedad Puerto Industrial Aguadulce in Colombia successfully opened for business in November with new and superior facilities for landside and seaside customers. Our New Priok Container Terminal One in Indonesia commenced operations in August, adding 1.5 million TEU capacity to the Port of Jakarta.
PSA International Pte Ltd Annual Report Two other major projects under construction, namely Bharat Mumbai Container Terminals in India and PSA Panama International Terminal Phase 2, are on track to start operations on schedule. To bolster our transhipment capabilities in South Korea, we acquired a controlling stake in PSA Hyundai Pusan Newport Terminal. Together with Pusan Newport International Terminal, PSA s annual capacity in the Port of Busan has doubled to almost five million TEUs. We are encouraged that some of our customers are prepared to co-invest in our facilities, demonstrating their commitment to hub in PSA through shared ownership of the berths. In one case, the joint investment of COSCO Shipping Ports and PSA Singapore was enhanced from two berths at PPT Phase 1 to three mega berths at PPT Phases 3 and 4. In another development, the joint venture company of CMA CGM and PSA Singapore, CMA CGM-PSA Lion Terminal, will operate four mega container berths at PPT Phases 3 and 4. Beyond container facilities, we have also channelled our investment into technology, innovation and broadened logistics assets which support our core business. One example is our investment in China United International Rail Containers Co., Limited, which extended our presence in China beyond 11 coastal container terminals and enabled us to participate in the development and operations of 18 rail-linked container terminals within China. We look forward to the opportunity of facilitating the seamless exchange of goods between these inland container hubs and our coastal terminals. In May 2016, we incepted PSA unboxed. With an initial fund size of S$20 million, this new corporate venture capital arm seeks to invest in and nurture start-ups that can tap on the latest technologies to create innovative logistics and engineering solutions for maritime operations, trade and finance ecosystems. This initiative dovetailed well with the PSA Living Lab where start-ups and technology providers can test their solutions. We also introduced CP4.0, PSA s technology blueprint that will guide us in exploring and adopting technologies for the port of the future. Meanwhile, our in-house developed Global Terminal Operating System (GTOS) is ready for deployment, with its first application rolled out at the Churchill Terminal in PSA Antwerp. GTOS, the core modules of which took us 120 man years to develop, is built on a new technological platform and promises to add new features every four months to improve efficiency of operations. I am also heartened to report that staff within the PSA Group are brimming with ideas. In 2016, we received a record 152 submissions from 25 business entities and departments during the Group Innovation Awards. We also introduced the ican platform, an internet-accessible platform where our staff can contribute ideas, vote for or build on the ideas of others. Consistent with our strategy to prepare ourselves for the future, we continue to place emphasis on the development of our people, through embracing a series of culture change programs which started almost a decade ago. Evolving from FISH! Philosophy and LeaderFish! to Fish+, LeaderFish+ and FISH Booster in more recent times, we further enhanced the program with FISH Blazer in Through developing a suite of tools and perspectives that focuses on inspiring a work culture that is passionate, purposeful, courageous and creative, we empower our people to put into action the Fish+ Principles of Stretch, Support, Self-discipline and Trust, and in so doing, encourage them to make choices that raise both personal and organisational ability and agility. I would like to convey my deep appreciation to our Group Chairman and the PSA International Board of Directors for their visionary leadership and invigorating insights. My management team and I continue to learn from them various aspects of how to run our business successfully. I wish also to thank our unions and staff for their dedication, hard work and the way they had risen above many challenges to service our customers well. We are working cohesively as a global team, as one PSA. The tough business environment is likely to continue and 2017 may turn out to be a watershed year when the pendulum of change towards new industry norms gathers momentum, challenging past logistics concepts, processes, business models and value creation with unprecedented vigour. Without losing sight of the imperative to deliver quality services to, and build successful partnerships with our customers, we are diligently exploring the use of technologies that will shape and drive the port and logistics of the future. Rather than be intimidated by the forces of change, we would like to ride on established and emerging technologies to co-create, with like-minded partners, an exciting future one that is more efficient, connected, automated, responsive, and with adaptive and pre-emptive capabilities. I invite our esteemed customers to work alongside us in this innovative journey to write the next chapters for our industry. TAN CHONG MENG Group CEO
