This publication can be viewed on line at Feeding the Homeless The Major Crimes Unit will be cooking for the homeless in Marathon Monday October 7th, at 12pm. Anyone who wants to help is welcome. The center is located behind Royal furniture 1669 Overseas Highway. Thanks for helping with court By Sgt. Jennifer Torres I wanted to personally thank everyone who helped out with a jury trial held at the Plantation Key Courthouse. I appreciate the professionalism of all involved with this sensitive and lengthy process. Because of all of you, we were able to complete this trial with no major issues. Thanks to: Capt. Fanelli, Lt. Horn, Sgt. Carey, Detectives Crozier, Galvez, Gaete, Dosh, Sajdak, Deputies Fumero, Argote, Gomez, Wyatt, Jodlowski, Torres, Lt. Major, Sgt.s Lawson and Gonzalez, Deputies Joseph, Stubblefield, Martinez. Also to reserves, victims advocates and everyone else who helped. I m proud to work with all of you. As Fantasy Fest approaches, strange people crop up all over. The Sheriff posed for a photo-op this week with the Wonderwomen of Womankind and Pink the python at the Sheriff s Office animal farm. Take Stock in Children The Take Stock in Children program is looking for mentors county-wide. In particular, Katrina Wiatt in the Middle Keys would like your help as a mentor. If you are interested, you can contact her at ext Outside of Marathon, anyone who wants to volunteer can call Discount cards for sale If you are interested in purchasing a discount card which can be used in various Upper Keys businesses, contact Communications Officer Debbi Johnson. She is helping to sell them this year for her daughter s PKS school Glee program. The cards are only $10 and are good for the next year. The discounts apply to following businesses: Dillon s Papa Johns Island Grill Mangrove Mike s Green Turtle Inn Kaiyo McDonald s Burger King Chad s Craig s Upper Crust Pizza And many more. 2 A clean up in Islamorada last weekend was fun and successful. It was organized by Back Country Cowboy Outfitters in conjunction with the Sheriff s Office and other community members. Reminder: Staff at the Roth Building are collecting gently worn clothing and accessories this month for a fund raiser to be held in December to benefit the MARC House. Captain Fanelli, Doug and Sue Harrison, Peggy Bryan and Haydee Martinez hold up some clothing they have already collected. A fund raiser for Elaine Woodson at Boondock s raised $6,000 to help with her medical expenses. Linda Mixon says special thanks to Carol Albury Johnson who was the driving force behind the benefit. Thanks also to Captain Tim Age, Lt. Jon Crane and Sgt. James Norman. Farmer Jeanne and her animals were at Curry Hammock State Park for the Birding and Wildlife festival. Thanks to Deputy Marco De La Rosa for his time spent helping out at the event. Thanks also to perpetual farm volunteers Mike Grattan and Emil LaVache, who always help out during her regular Sunday open house events. In the spirit of the Halloween and Fall Harvest season, the Sheriff s Office turned out this week to help unload pumpkins at the MARC House in Key West. 3 Staff at the Roth Building organized a lunch for Law Enforcement Appreciation Day (above) and below, Marathon High School appreciated their Hometown Heroes at a football game. Districts One, Four and Five said farewell to their captains this week in preparation for command staff changes which will take place Monday. 5 Community Enhancement Project October 19, :00 A.M. The Monroe County Sheriff s Office along with its community partners will be giving 33 rd. St. a facelift. The Recreation Center needs a new coat of paint and the fence needs to be straightened. The curbs and parking lines at Stanley Switlik need to be painted, signs need to be straightened and the benches need power washing. The Jaycees building needs the grass cut and trees trimmed. All are welcome to participate. If you have any old brushes, rollers, or paint trays, bring them with you. We can always use extra. If you have any questions, please contact Sgt. D. 6 THE MONROE COUNTY SHERIFF S OFFICE UPPER KEYS RECORDS DIVISION AT THE ROTH BUILDING WILL BE PARTICIPATING IN: A Signature Event Benefitting Monroe Association for ReMARCable Citizens The Sheriff s Office Records Division will be collecting NEW OR GENTLY WORN men s and women s clothing (on hangers), accessories, jewelry, and purses. We will be helping MARC sell the items at a special event held in December, (Please bring to the PK Substation by October 30 th so we can sort thru and inventory the items.) Weekly Rap Up - Page 6
