1 Obstetric and Gynaecology Directorate Education Development Plan Aims The aim of this plan is to develop a strategic view of the delivery and quality of education, within the directorate. The plan will encourage inter-professional and multidisciplinary learning and identify priorities for educational activity for Educational activity within the directorate should support both the educational priorities identified through effective clinical governance and the continuing development of all staff by promoting life-long learning. The obstetrics and gynaecology education and training group has developed this plan. The group is multi disciplinary and has representation from all areas within the directorate. The Terms of Reference and group member ship are contained in Appendix A. The views of medical staff including consultant and training grades, midwifery, nursing and administration staff are represented. Achievements The work programme of the group in the year achieved the following 1. The continued improvement of facilities and teaching space within the Princess Anne Hospital with the neonatal seminar room in particular having its equipment upgraded and the resources room on labour ward having been refurbished. 2. The development of multidisciplinary training and education opportunities has taken place in the following areas: a. Skills and Drills for Maternity has been very well attended with over 90% of all grades of staff attending all of the required CNST level 2 drills b. Introduction of K2 fetal monitoring training package is now available to staff on the internet c. Implementation of gynae teaching on a regular basis for SHO/SpR d. Multidisciplinary teaching of neonatal resuscitation e. Interprofessional teaching of expanded neonatal nursing role 3. Educational issues for staff groups were highlighted via directorate monitoring of critical incidents and risk management activity with organisation of appropriate educational activity. In particular this has been disseminated through monthly perinatal mortality meetings and the Maternity Mail publication.
2 4. The mandatory training requirements within the directorate were reviewed and 3 mandatory days have been developed with dates published in advance for all staff to attend. 5. Database established for all Mandatory training for all midwifery, nursing, medical and support staff. Priorities The priorities identified by the group for work in the year are as follows: 1. Completion of a needs analysis of child protection training within the directorate. Working with the Lead for Child Protection, develop a plan that ensures the Directorate can develop the required skills to deliver the service. 2. Establish the educational half days within the care group in a way that allows as many staff groups as possible to participate. 3. Ensure that the Directorate can achieve standard 5 for CNST level 2 for September Development of a robust in-house clinical education support for maternity care assistants. This should be inline with the HIOW Maternity Network. 5. Working with the Trust to assess the education needs of the administration and clerical staff with particular reference to the statutory and mandatory training. 6. Educational issues for staff groups which are highlighted via directorate monitoring of critical incidents; audit, guideline development and risk management activity will be addressed by organisation of appropriate educational activity, either via in-service training or educational meetings/courses. 7. Working with the trust lead to further improve the documentation of the training within the directorate with regard to the use of medical equipment. This includes the identification of equipment competence required for each staff group. 8. Development of a variety of methods for staff to achieve their equipment training competencies. This will include self-audits and workbooks. 9. Work with the manual-handling trainers to ensure all staff have the required training.
3 10. Undertaking inter-professional learning with regard to communication and customer care. 11. Assess the care group s readiness for Npfit in particular the IT training. 12. To continue to exploit educational opportunities within the clinical area as a highly beneficial route towards acuity learning and skills acquisition for all members of the multidisciplinary team 13. To progress with the ethos of workbased learning as a versatile and flexible model towards developing postqualifying education 14. To ensure all staff involved in the care of infats receive education and training in resuscitation of the the newborn 15. Many new staff have been recruited to facilitate the expansion and development of services, therefore it is a Care Group priority to continue to ensure appropriate induction/preceptorship, smooth transition to new post and integration within the multidisciplinary team thereby aiming towards the retention of a highly skilled and motivated workforce. Outline of action to date on priorities and work to be undertaken Review of child protection training A review of training activity will provide a baseline assessment of the skills within the Directorate. Similarly an assessment of current training opportunities for staff (both uni and multiprofessional) with information about wants and needs would be helpful in planning future activity. A database has been developed to record the activity but an assessment is required of the level of training required by each staff group. The Education group will aim to complete the initial analysis by July. Education half days A paper has been presented to Divisional board explaining the issues and identifying a number of possible solutions. CNST Level 2 Skills & Drills training This will be a key driver until September. The practice educators have invested a huge amount of energy in ensuring there is ample opportunity to attend the required sessions. Development continues for the other standards. Maternity care assistants A review of current staff skills has been undertaken and a framework has been agreed for competencies required to support the service.
4 Medical equipment training The group will facilitate the trust wide move to document that appropriate training on the use of medical equipment has been undertaken within the directorate. This is a huge undertaking and therefore significant shifting of resources will be required. Where deficiencies are identified training programmes will need to be designed and implemented. This is in line with CNST requirements and therefore potential funding from future savings may well need to be sought to support this undertaking in particular to develop teaching and assessment tools. Communication skills To date the group has facilitated a series of little things matters training which has been well attended. Staff attitude and communication remain at the heart of the complaints received and the study days will be developed over this year. Communication focussed study days have been developed for medical trainees that will now be developed to include all staff groups. Educational issues highlighted via directorate monitoring of critical incidents; audit, guideline development and risk management activity. Educational issues for both multidisciplinary and individual staff groups, identified within the directorate, are being addressed by the group and appropriate educational interventions are being undertaken. This is an ongoing activity throughout the year. In particular the findings of the CEMACH and NCEPOD reports will be considered and education undertaken to ensure their recommendations are implemented. Summary The multiprofessional education training and development group has contributed significantly to moving the educational agenda forward within the directorate with some excellent achievements this year. Quality education and training continues to be the key to success and this plan will help focus the activity of the group in the coming year. The fundamental aim of this plan remains unchanged from last year and is therefore to ensure that the directorate prioritises implements and evaluates its educational activity in order to achieve the imperative of improved service for patients. To influence strategic developments and share best practice. Terms of Reference: The group will meet 6 times a year in order to: Identify education, training and development needs within the Directorate, considering National and Trust priorities and both current and future changes in working practice. Co-ordinate the pursuit of funding for education, training and clinical developments within the Directorate. Influence change to establish good educational, training and development practises within the Directorate. Encourage multiprofessional teaching and learning. Establish priorities, set objectives, deliver and evaluate multiprofessional education, training and development within the Directorate.
