JOB DETAILS Job Title: Managerially Responsible to: Professionally Responsible to: Services: Location: Head of Nursing, Neonatal, Children and Young People s Services Director of Services Director of Nursing (Acute Services) Children and Young People s Services Women and Children s Services Directorate 2. JOB PURPOSE The Head of Nursing will be the professional Head of Nursing for Children and Young People in the Directorate and will be responsible for the implementation of Nursing Strategies to support the care of children and young people, the continued improvement of nursing practice underpinned by evidence base knowledge and competencies. The postholder will be a member of the Senior Management Team and will therefore contribute to the corporate management of the Directorate and will assist the Director of Services in the achievement of the Directorate s objectives. The postholder will contribute significantly to the implementation and monitoring of the Clinical Governance Strategy. Strategic leadership for Children and Young People s Nurses. Lead on practice initiatives to maximise services to Children and Young People. Manage Children and Young People s Patient Services which include Family Support, Young people s Services and Bereavement Services for the Directorate.

ORGANISATIONAL CHART Director of Services Women & Children s Directorate Associate Medical Director Head of Nursing Head of Midwifery Head of HR Head of Finance Director of Nursing Acute Services CSM Paediatrics Acute Services CSM Neonatal 4 x Lead Nurses 1 Lead Nurse/Midwife 5. ROLE OF THE DEPARTMENT The Women and Children s Directorate will oversee the performance and strategic management of the Women and Children s health system and will be accountable for all governance arrangements. The Children s Services will manage the clinical services for Hospital Paediatrics which includes inpatient, day case and outpatient services.
3 6. KEY RESULT AREAS Assist the Director of Services in the development and achievement of the Directorate objectives. Lead with the planning, development and implementation of nursing services for children and young people to ensure that they are best provided to meet the developing needs of the service and users. Significantly contribute to the Directorate s Clinical Governance agenda. Significantly contribute to the Risk Management and monitoring of Directorate clinical incidents. Contribute to the Directorate s Health and Safety Plan. Be a key contributor to the Directorate s Clinical Effectiveness Forum. Lead on the continuous development of the Directorate s Clinical Governance Plan to achieve better patient services across the Directorate. In conjunction with the other members of the Directorate Team ensure that financial, clinical activity and performance targets are achieved. To ensure excellent relationships with further and Higher Education Institutions to influence the context of education programmes. To ensure undergraduate nurses experience and attain all their learning outcomes whilst on clinical placements. Assist the Director of Nursing (Acute) to develop and implement the Nursing and Midwifery Strategy at Directorate and Acute Division level. Contribute to the strategic direction of the Acute Division, and assist in the determination of Divisional Strategy and Policy. Support the development of future service provision, by participating in the corporate planning process. Lead on the management of change to encourage multi-disciplinary clinical practice. Lead on Equality and Diversity for the Directorate. Lead on the Child Protection agenda for the Directorate. Contribute significantly to the design of the New Children s Hospital ensuring the Directorate s nursing staff are fully involved. Assist the Director of Nursing in further development of Nursing and Midwifery policies and practice. Contribute to and support the development of the Directorate s Clinical Governance Strategy through evidence-based practice. Lead and promote development of improved patient services at Directorate and Division level.
4 As required, act as the Director of Nursing s nominated representative in external committee s etc convened to consider nursing and midwifery issues at Acute Divisional and National level. Professional lead for Children and Young People s Services across NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde. To lead on the development and monitoring of the Directorate Nursing Workforce and Workload Plan. Be responsible for keeping the Directorate Management Team appraised of all issues as they relate to nursing, inter terms of practice, workforce planning and deployment of staff. Provide professional leadership to nurses and Directors of CHCPs in relation to Children s and Young People s Nursing. Lead on both the implementation of the Emergency Care Framework and Action Framework for children and young people. Lead on the development of the PFPI agenda within Children s Services. Manage Children and Young People s Patient Services which include Family Support, Young People s Services and Bereavement Services. 7. MOST CHALLENGING PART OF THE JOB Contributing to and influencing the development of frameworks that ensure the highest standard of modern designed healthcare through effective clinical management and practice and utilisation of resources. Developing effective communication within both the Directorate and across Directorates within the Acute Division. Leading, influencing and motivating staff to work across traditional organisation and professional boundaries to redesign clinical service and maximise their role and potential. 8. ASSIGNMENT AND REVIEW OF WORK and DECISIONS AND JUDGEMENTS The postholder is directly accountable to the Director of Services. As a senior member of the Directorate Team, the Head of Children and Young People s Nursing will have significant autonomy to achieve results within the parameters of the Directorate and Divisional policies. The Head of Nursing will regularly meet with the Directorate of Services to review performance against agreed targets. Review of performance is through the agreement of performance objectives set annually. Review of objectives is by the Director of Services and Director of Nursing. The Head of Nursing will be responsible to the Director of Nursing in relation to professional nursing issues. 9. COMMUNICATIONS AND RELATIONSHIPS The Head of Nursing will have wide ranging relationships with the clinical and non-clinical staff through the Directorate. Within the Directorate, the Head of Nursing will form effective working arrangements with the Director, Associate Medical Director, General Managers, Clinical Directors, Service Managers and support Finance and Human Resource staff. Trade Union and professional organisation colleagues.
5 There will additionally be a requirement to maintain effective extensive communications with Health Board, Scottish Government, Academic Departments of Universities, Local Health Council representatives and CHP/Mental Health Partnerships in relation to patient services, professional and funding issues. 10 KNOWLEDGE, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED The postholder will be a Registered Children and Young People s Nurse with a demonstrable track record of achievement in a senior management position in children services within NHS. The postholder will have an understanding of the broader agenda facing the service is also a prerequisite. Such knowledge and general business awareness may have been acquired through study leading to the award of a higher academic qualification or equivalent training and experience, educated to degree level preferably working towards Masters level. The postholder must have the ability to work flexibly, think laterally and communicate effectively at all levels of the organisation is central to the achievement of this job s objectives. The postholder must have experience of multi-professional and multi-agency working. The postholder must have a minimum of 5 years experience working in a senior management position within the NHS.
