1 Program Description Emergency Medical Technician-Basic Syllabus This program will prepare you to provide pre-hospital emergency medical care and transportation for critical and emergent patients who access the emergency medical services (EMS) system. You will acquire basic knowledge and skills necessary to stabilize and safely transport patients ranging from non-emergency and routine medical transports to life threatening emergencies. Emergency Medical Technicians are a critical link between the scene of an emergency and the health care system. Emergency Medical Technicians function as part of a comprehensive EMS response system, under medical oversight. EMT s perform interventions with the basic equipment typically found on an ambulance. Upon successful completion of this course, you will be eligible to take the National Registry of Emergency Technicians exams. Applies fundamental knowledge of the EMS system, safety/well-being of the EMT, medical/legal and ethical issues to the provision of emergency care. 2. Applies fundamental knowledge of the anatomy and function of all human systems to the practice of EMS. 3. Uses foundational anatomical and medical terms and abbreviations in written and oral communication with colleagues and other health care professionals. 4. Applies fundamental knowledge of the pathophysiology of respiration and perfusion to patient assessment and management. 5. Applies fundamental knowledge of life span development to patient assessment and management. 6. Uses simple knowledge of the principles of illness and injury prevention in emergency care. 7. Applies fundamental knowledge of the medications that the EMT may assist/administer to a patient during an emergency. 8. Applies knowledge (fundamental depth, foundational breadth) of general anatomy and physiology to patient assessment and management in order to assure a patent airway, adequate mechanical ventilation and respiration for patients of all ages.

2 9. Applies scene information and patient assessment findings (scene size up, primary and secondary assessment, patient history, and reassessment) to guide emergency management. 10. Applies fundamental knowledge to provide basic emergency care and transportation based on assessment findings for an acutely ill patient. 11. Applies fundamental knowledge of the causes, pathophysiology, and management of shock, respiratory failure or arrest, cardiac failure or arrest, and post resuscitation management. 12. Applies fundamental knowledge to provide basic emergency care and transportation based on assessment findings for an acutely injured patient. 13. Applies a fundamental knowledge of growth, development, and aging and assessment findings to provide basic emergency care and transportation for a patient with special needs. 14. Knowledge of operational roles and responsibilities to ensure safe patient, public, and personnel safety. 15. Demonstrate appropriate judgement and clinical behavior in the workplace. Program Length Students will complete online course work outside of class, meet three times per week and four Saturdays in class for in depth exploration of material, applying real world scenarios, engaging in critical thinking activities and practice competency skills. Total: 209 ( 179 hours in class and 30 out of class hours) Plan on 3 hours per week for online course work outside class Prerequisites Students can take the course prior to 18 and test for Idaho licensure before 18. They can obtain Idaho licensure at 16 and 17 years old with parental or guardian consent. They are required to be 18 to obtain National Registry. Immunizations: These are required for your Ride Along clinical experience. Please bring documentation of the following immunizations: TB, MMR & Hepatitis B. If you elect not to receive these immunizations a waiver form must be completed prior to your internship. Scroll down a page for the attached Immunization Record form. Initial EMS Online Courses: You must also complete the following free, online courses right after orientation and prior the first day of class EMT class. Go to TRAIN Idaho at id.train.org (use Internet Explorer 7 or higher or Google Chrome). Set up an account with TRAIN Idaho. Specify state portal and group Select Idaho Duel EMS/ Fire Agency CDA Fire Dept select next You ll be directed through additional questions over the next couple of pages and select answers/ options that apply.

3 Questions regarding FEMA student ID number and Professional Licenses- if none, it s okay to skip Once you ve completed the setting up of your profile on TRAIN IDAHO, the courses will be applied to your profile as displayed below. Go to FEMA Independent Study Courses at training.fema.gov/nims. Register for a FEMA Student Identification (SID) Number. Find your course and click on it to study. Take the final exam and within one business day you will receive an response with your score and link to print your certificate. Introduction to Incident Command System ICS-100, course code IS-100.B (3 hours) National Incident Management System (NIMS), course code IS-700.A (3 hours) Please complete the courses and bring confirmation of completion on your first day of class. If you have any trouble with these courses please contact the NIC Workforce Training Center for assistance.

4 Program Expectations & Requirements Classes are on Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings. Class begins promptly at 6pm and concludes at 9pm. Students may not exceed more than 4 absences for ANY reason. This WILL RESULT in an incomplete for the course. If you arrive late (10 min. or more) or leave early (10 min. or more) a total of 4 times this will count as 1 absent day. No exceptions will be made to these attendance requirements! All chapter reading and workbook assignments must be completed prior to the corresponding lecture. Workbooks may be audited at any time for completion. Students must achieve a 70% cumulative score on all written chapter exams. Failure to achieve a 70% grade will result in an incomplete for the course. This is Pass/Fail based on the National Registry Skills Sheets. Each skills sheet station must be passed. Failure to pass all skills stations will result in an incomplete for the course. A ride-along opportunity will be provided to students who have above a 90% in class, who are in good standing in attendance and homework assignments, and have completed an evaluation with an instructor. This course gives the student the ability to take the NREMT Exam. The NREMT Exam is the responsibility of the student. Cell phones and pagers must be set on silent. If a student needs to take an emergency call or make one, they will be allowed to exit the class to do so. Texting/Social Media will not be allowed during class time. Class participation is a requirement. If any student refuses to participate in class or disrupts the other students, the student may be asked to leave and will receive an absent for that day.

5 Certification Upon successful completion, students will receive a Certificate of Achievement from North Idaho College. The National Registry of Emergency Medical Technician (NREMT) psychomotor exam is included in the program and upon demonstration of competency is achieved you will be able to sit for the written exam.
