1 WEST POINT DIVERSITY & INCLUSION LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE Achieving Excellence Through Diversity and Inclusion

2 WELCOME Dear Conference Participants, Welcome to the United States Military Academy, the world s preeminent leader development institution. On behalf of the staff and faculty, thank you for taking part in the 16th West Point Diversity and Inclusion Leadership Conference. At West Point, we support the Army s overall readiness by developing leaders of character who are committed to the values of both the United States Military Academy and the Army, are ready to lead America s sons and daughters in the crucible of ground combat and know what it takes to fight and win where required. Whether in peacetime or war, the strength of our combat arms team is its ability to leverage diversity across the spectrum. Every Army team, from platoon to the entire force, consists of individual members who bring a wide range of experience, talent, ideas and perspectives, as well as gender, ethnicity, culture, geography and more. Good leaders are able to bring that talent and experience together, to leverage, integrate and maximize it so that the team successfully and effectively accomplishes the mission. Maximizing diversity and inclusion enhances unit readiness and makes us a more combat-ready Army that can win on today s and future battlefields. Here at West Point, leveraging the individual talents and experiences of each and every member of the team makes us more mission-ready, and ensures we more effectively develop leaders of character and equip them with the skills and competencies needed to lead diverse teams and contribute to the collective strength of our Army. I hope you find this conference a worthwhile opportunity for learning, mutual understanding, and constructive dialogue that will help you as leaders to create the culture to better leverage diversity within your own organizations, while developing and inspiring the Army s future leaders to do the same.
