Schmidt, P.E., FASM. Dr. Schmidt Bio: Dr. Frederick E. Schmidt, Jr., P.E., FASM retired in 2015 after 17 years as a senior managing consultant at Engineering Systems, Inc. He served as Technical Director of Materials Engineering at ESI for many years. He was responsible for a very broad professional engineering practice which used interdisciplinary teamwork with clients and other experts while working to solve complex "mission impossible" problems. Prior to ESI, he served as Chief Metallurgist for Remington Arms, a subsidiary of E.I. DuPont De Nemours. He designed and specified all materials, coatings and processes for advanced weapons, i.e., Navy SEALs, sniper firearms, commercial products, and ammunition optimization for the U.S. Army. Dr. Schmidt was employed by DuPont from 1972 to 1993 as an R&D coordinator of interdepartment projects at the Experimental Station, Wilmington, DE. He was appointed a research fellow in 1989 in recognition of his creative solutions to proprietary electronic and materials processing quality control issues. He was the designated liaison to the engineering development laboratory and DuPont legal department tasked to invent unique products and processes. Dr. Schmidt was commissioned in the U.S. Army in He served for 12 years in various command positions, as a combat qualified reserve officer, retiring as Captain in the Corps of Engineers, Dr. Schmidt is a Fellow of ASM International, and Alpha Sigma Mu where he currently serves as President and Chairman of the Board of Trustees since He served on the ASM Board of Trustees from as well as serving on the ASM Materials Education Foundation Board as Trustee from Dr. Schmidt received the ASM International Allan Ray Putnam Service Award in 1991 and the William Hunt Eisenman Award in He has a Ph.D. and M.S. in Materials Science and Engineering from Drexel University, and a B.S. in Metallurgical Engineering from Drexel Institute of Technology. He became a Professional Engineer in the State of Pennsylvania in 1981 and currently holds

2 P.E. licenses in eight states. Dr. Schmidt has earned the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) designation as a Model Law Engineer. 9:15 am 10:00 am ASM Renewal Overview, Making it Happen. We BELIEVE that people and organizations have almost an unlimited POTENTIAL to grow and achieve. We help to CHANGE the conversation with our innovative communication framework and LEVERAGE WHY and HOW with STORY. Learning and practicing a replicable STORY FRAMEWORK will help ASM Members and Chapter Leaders INFLUENCE their chapters and committees while leveraging the power of ASM s renewal and membership. In addition, they will gain CLARITY and ABILITY to share the ASM Renewal Story with others. Changing your relationships by CHANGING THE CONVERSATION. KEY GOALS How Story Leverages and Enhances ASM Membership Workshop Understand WHY and HOW Story works. Learn how to Share the ASM Benefits and value proposition with members/volunteers. Confidently tell the ASM Story in a way that reinforces ASM s positive changes when looking for members (at colleges and universities). Learn to utilize the CI2 framework for gathering, building, telling, practicing stories. Build and Tell your Why Story to build trust with members. Practice Makes Habit. Have and utilize takeaways/resources to further develop skills and share with other members. 3 Key Note Speaker: General Barry R. McCaffrey General McCaffrey Bio: Barry R. McCaffrey General Barry R. McCaffrey is President of his own consulting firm based in Arlington, Virginia. He serves as a national security and terrorism analyst for NBC News. The Washington Speakers Bureau exclusively represents his speeches. General McCaffrey served as the Bradley Distinguished Professor of International Security Studies from January 2001 to May 2005, and then as an Adjunct Professor of International Security Studies from May 2005 to December 2010 at the United States Military Academy at West Point, NY. General McCaffrey graduated from Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, and the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. He holds a Master of Arts degree in civil government from American University. He attended the Harvard University National Security Program as well as the Business School Executive Education Program. General McCaffrey is a member Phi Kappa Phi, a national honor society dedicated to the recognition and promotion of academic excellence in all disciplines. General McCaffrey has been elected to the Board of Directors of CRC Health Corporations and the Atlantic Council of the United States. He is also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations; an Associate of the Inter-American Dialogue; Chairman of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Education Center Advisory Board; and a member of the Board of Advisors of the National Infantry Foundation. General McCaffrey has had a long association with the Phoenix House Foundation, a non-profit, dedicated to drug and alcohol abuse treatment, prevention, and therapy. General McCaffrey stepped down as the Director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) in January He was confirmed to the position by unanimous vote of the U.S. Senate in February 1996 and served as a member of the President s Cabinet and the National Security Council for drug-related issues. As ONDCP Director, he coordinated the $19 billion federal drug control budget and developed the U.S. National Drug Control Strategy. General McCaffrey is active in national and international security affairs. He co-chaired the Atlantic Council of the United States NATO Counterterrorism Working Group leading a delegation to Moscow, Mons, Brussels and Warsaw. In 2008, he participated as member of the Secretary of Public Safety Genaro Garcia Luna s Council of International Experts which concentrates on Mexico s national security within their police and government agencies. In 2004, he addressed the Security of the Americas Conference in Mexico City and met with senior officials of the Mexican Government. In April 2004, General McCaffrey helped release the CSIS Binational Commission Reports on Migration and Border Security. In February 2002, General McCaffrey visited Cuba and participated in a small group session with Fidel and Raul Castro discussing U.S.-Cuba policies. General McCaffrey periodically conducts politicalmilitary evaluations of Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Kuwait, Colombia, Mexico, and Saudi Arabia. Prior to confirmation as the National Drug Policy Director, General McCaffrey served as the Commander-in-Chief of the U.S. Armed Forces Southern Command coordinating national security operations in Latin America. During his military career, he served overseas for thirteen years and completed four combat tours. He commanded the 24th Infantry Division (Mech) during the Desert Storm 400- kilometer left hook attack into Iraq. At retirement from active duty, he was the most highly decorated four-star general in the U.S. Army. He twice received the Distinguished Service Cross, the nation s second highest medal for valor. He was also awarded two Silver Stars and received three Purple Heart medals for wounds sustained in combat. General McCaffrey served as the assistant to General Colin Powell and supported the Chairman as the JCS advisor to the Secretary of State and the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations.

In this session we will touch on resources and opportunities made available to assist Chapters in improving their programs. A healthy portion of this topic will focus on best practices of Chapters who are willing to take programming risks to excel in this area. Presented by Chapter Council. 10:15 am 11:00 am Education The ASM Education Team and Chapter Education Committees have several opportunities to partner when delivering quality education, training, and learning resources to the materials community. 11:15 am 12:00 pm Volunteerism Recruitment/Recognition The Volunteerism initiative of ASM s Strategic Plan may be the single most important program for the future of ASM. Without volunteerism, nothing else is possible. This workshop will provide an overview of the resources and tools available to ASM Chapter leaders to assist them in their efforts to recruit, retain, and recognize high quality volunteers share best practices and success stories from Chapters, Affiliate Societies and Members and review key resources focusing on how Chapters have used these tools, and the results achieved. Presented by the ASM Volunteerism Committee. 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm Lunch 1:00 pm 1:45 pm Awards For more than 90 years, ASM International has recognized the achievements of individuals and organizations that contribute to materials science and engineering. There are over twenty ASM Awards that recognize individuals and/or organizations for technical achievements, teaching, research, development and furthering the purpose and mission of ASM. Learn how to continue and contribute to this long standing tradition. 2:00 pm 2:45 pm The Next Generation Chapter- A Topical Discussion Share your ASM story and how you have leveraged ASM benefits and Chapter involvement to advance socially and professionally. Using what has been learned by the sharing of others, attendees will explore opportunities for Chapter growth in an ever changing environment. 3:00 pm 3:45 pm Focus Groups - 4:00 pm 5:00 pm Down 5:45 pm Busses Depart for ASM Headquarters Travel Leadership Days attendees to travel to The Dome at Materials Park for an evening of fun and networking with newly found friends. 6:30 pm Dinner under the Dome Attendees have a special opportunity to take in the past, present and future of what is Materials Park. Constructed in 1959, Materials Park has served as the "home" of materials science and engineering. Enjoy an evening under the dome filled with sumptuous treats, music and games. Plus, don t miss your opportunity to have ASM Staff take you on a guided tour of the building and iconic geodesic dome. Sunday
