7 Month of the Military Child: NEWS Military Brats who Purple Up get free treats April 18 Leader staff reports Photo by WALLACE McBRIDE Sgt. 1st Class Alice Aimes distributes literature at Gate 2 early Monday morning about Sexual Assault Awareness Month, which began April 1. Not in our Army Awareness month aims to prevent sexual assault By YOLANDA BROWN 193rd Infantry Brigade Victim Advocate The Army recognizes each April as Sexual Assault Awareness the prevalence of sexual assault and sexual harassment within our communities, but the progress the Army continues to make in combating sexual assault and sexual harassment as well. This year the Army s SAAPM theme is SHARP: Shaping a Culture of Trust. Trust is at the core of any relationship subordinate to leader, supervisor to employee, or even peer to peer and it is essential in establishing and maintaining a rapport of any professional and personal association. But what happens to the relationship when trust is violated? How and where do leaders begin to establish or co-workers; especially when addressing incidents of sexual harassment or sexual assault? Walk-the-talk. Every service member and civilian is a leader and must accept his individual responsibility in the prevention of sexual harassment and sexual assault. Trust can be built when leaders exercise and experience good judgement to include consistently displaying appropriate and positive behaviors. Individuals experiencing or affected by sexual harassment or sexual assault may choose not to report incidents because an immediate breakdown of trust has occurred and there is no expectation that the offenses can or will be resolved. Actively and openly discouraging inappropriate comments and behaviors potentially creates an environment where individuals feel comfortable reporting sexual harassment/sexual assault and sets the tone for creating a climate where individuals are treated with dignity and respect Break down barriers. For every effort made to encourage complainants and victims to report sexual harassment and /or sexual assault offenses, there are still individuals unwilling to report due to barriers or perceptions in regards to reporting. See PREVENT: Page 11 What is pint-sized, wears purple and is tough enough to meet the challenges of a military upbringing? Military brats! On April 18, the Army & Air Force Exchange Service at Fort Jackson will celebrate Purple Up Day, a worldwide recognition of the strength and sacrifice of military children, by offering free treats to any child who wears purple to participating Exchange restaurants. With frequent moves, parental deployments and an ever-changing peer group, being a military brat can be difficult, said Kevin Lowans with Exchange Jackson Main Store. The resiliency of military children amid such challenges is an inspiration, and the Fort Bliss Exchange salutes their service on Purple Up Day. Any child 18 years old or younger who wears purple is eligible to receive a free treat while supplies last. Treats vary by location and may come in the form of a side, fountain drink, dessert or other item. Offer valid April 18 only. Purple Up Day is held annually during Month of the Military Child, which recognizes the contributions of children to the armed forces community. The color purple symbolizes the combined colors of all military branches: Army green, Navy blue, Marine red, Coast Guard blue and Air Force blue. 17 Resiliency Continued from Page 6 The Army Leadership Requirements Model has three different attributes of what a leader should be, know and do. Be resilient when faced with adversity and know that the best outcome will be a testament to how you responded to the problem. Know that each experience we go through good or bad can teach us a positive lesson. Be willing to try; if you fail you must try again and continue to solving. Resilient people have the ability to remain calm, acknowledge and evaluate things rationally. Adapting and surviving some of life s most away and that is the lesson that can be learned. Each time you solve a problem we ll continue to get better at the process. What matters the most is not necessary the why of what you re dealing with, but the how you re going to react with the situation. What does a suspicious package look like? By Leader Staff Reports Suspicious packages can come in all shapes and sizes. A suspicious package is any backpack, bag, box or other item left unattended or that otherwise seems out of place. For instance a package you re expecting from UPS may not raise suspicions, but an unexpected package, with or without markings, left on your door step or porch may be cause for alarm. One of the best defense against suspicious packages is awareness of your surroundings, know what is normal for your surroundings. If you see something that does not look right, report it. Remember, See something, say something. If you receive a suspicious package what should you do? Report suspicious unattended packages, or a potential bomb threat to authorities immediately, follow instructions, and evacuate the area Call 911. Provide as much detail as possible to authorities. Seek distance and cover they are the best means to reduce the risk. Do not approach or inspect suspicious items or unattended packages. Do not congregate near the incident scene it risk of secondary attacks. Page 18 The Fort Jackson Leader April 5, 2018
