A recent symposium looked at what improvements can be made to how drill sergeants are taught. By LATRICE LANGSTON Fort Jackson Leader Representatives from all four Army Initial Entry Training installations attended a Drill Sergeant Program of Instruction Symposium at the U.S. Army Drill Sergeant Academy June to develop a strategy to meet the Center of Initial Military Training commander s intent of building expert trainers. While thanking the attendees for their time and dedication, Command Sgt. Maj. Edward Mitchell, senior enlisted leader for the Center of Initial Military Training asked that all take one message home with them. Thank you for taking the time to come down here to show how important this really is, Mitchell said. The message I want you to take out of here is; we are training the leaders of tomorrow. I m talking about future drill sergeants; because the leaders that come here are going to be much different when they leave. 4 Fort Jackson Movie Schedule U.S. Army photo Soldiers administer the strength deadlift event of the Occupational Physical Assessment Test to a potential recruit. Since January 2017, when OPAT was rolled out to recruiting stations, officials believe the test has significantly reduced attrition among trainees. OPAT reducing trainee attrition By SEAN KIMMONS Army News Service Fewer Army recruits are now dropping out of initial military training, preventing the Army from wasting millions in training dollars, said the Army s senior enlisted advisor. Occupational Physical Assessment Test is better preparing new recruits for the physical rigors of training they will face once they step off the bus and are greeted by drill sergeants. That was the goal, said Sgt. Maj. of the Army Daniel A. Dailey. The goal was to get 18- to 24-year-old people more focused Day 1 of basic training, and saying, Oh my God, I have to do a pushup. Given to recruits to determine their best- muscular strength, muscular endurance, cardiorespiratory endurance, explosive power and speed. Current Soldiers who decide to reclass to more physically demanding jobs are also required to take the test. The gender and age neutral test includes four events a standing long jump, seated power throw, deadlift and interval run that gauge a recruit s physical aptitude similar to how the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery assesses mental aptitude. OPAT, obviously, is increasing our capability, Dailey said Monday at a media roundtable inside the Pentagon. There was no physical assessment prior to OPAT. Since January 2017, when the OPAT test Army has seen an average of about 1,000 fewer trainees leave initial military training early. That s about equal to a 10 percent overall reduction in attrition. We re saving over 1,000 [trainees] a year, said Michael McGurk, director of research and analysis at the Army Center for Initial Military Training. Many trainees who drop out, he added, experience some sort of musculoskeletal issue. It costs between $55,000 to $74,000 to send a recruit through training, depending on if they attend one-station unit training or a combination of basic combat training and advanced individual training. McGurk said his center uses $50,000 as a plete the training. Using that number, cost avoidance for the Army could be $50 million or more each year. We think that s on the low end, he said Thursday. It s not savings, it s [cost] avoidance, because no one hands you a check for that money. It s the car that didn t break down, the water heater that didn t explode. As more and more recruits train for the OPAT, scores have also gone up. When Dailey travels to speak with high school students, he notices that many of them are already aware of it. The scores on OPAT are getting better and that is simply because the greater population that is propensed to serve in the military know about it and now they re training for it, he said. 6 Fort Jackson: HOUSING NOTES Updates from Housing Services U.S. Army Chaplain Center and School photo Chaplain (Lt. Col.) Glenn Palmer spent the afternoon in the field at Fort Jackson, South Carolina with religious affairs specialists in Advanced Individual Training on May 22 as they trained to protect the chaplain while on patrol and observed a key leader engagement between Palmer and a local religious leader. Army Chaplain School to celebrate centennial in July By MEL SLATER Army Chaplain Center and School Public Affairs Army chaplaincy has much to celebrate in 2018 the 243rd birthday of the Army Chaplain Corps and the 100 year anniversary of the Army Chaplain School. The saying goes, There are no atheists in foxholes. While the veracity of that saying is up for debate, one thing is true: if a Soldier is in a foxhole, there is an Army chaplain and religious affairs specialist close by. On July 20, the Army Chaplaincy will converge on Columbia, South Carolina, to hold the Centennial Celebration of the Army Chaplain School and to recognize the Army Chaplain Corps 243 Years of service. The event will be held at the University of South Carolina Alumni Center, 900 Senate Street, Columbia, South Carolina. All are welcome. For ticket information visit eventbrite.com/o/united-states-army-chaplain-center-andschool This will be an evening of fun and inspiration as we celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Army Chaplain School by Looking back... launching forward, said Chap. (Col.) Jeffery D. Hawkins, commandant of the U.S. Army Chaplaincy Center and School. For 243 Years just as the Army itself, chaplains have served to bring God to Soldiers and Soldiers to God. It was Continental Army Commander, Gen. George Washington who is credited with saying, We need chaplains. And on his request to the Continental Congress, chaplains were established as part of the Army on July 25, and women during all of our wars. Some are buried in Arlington National Cemetery and cemeteries across the country. On the campus of the U.S. Army Chaplain Center and School at Fort Jackson is a memorial garden with the names of chaplains and attacks on our homeland. 8 Photos by RON LESTER SOLDIERS TEACH ATHLETES LEADERSHIP June 27 was no ordinary training day for the USC Gamecock football team they were on Fort Jackson for the third straight year participating in exercises designed to strengthen them as a team. Jeff Dillman, director of football strength and conditioning at the school, said that this type of training shows the team that it is about more than football. We are training for football but this isn t just about football; we train to win on and off the field; we train for life, he said. Dillman praised the Soldiers who helped the team through the courses saying that they gave them a better understanding of what leadership and teamwork is all about. The whole crew that worked with the team today, did an unbelievable job of not only forcing them to push through things and strain and get through a little bit of pain but also, help them understand leadership qualities and what it takes to be successful.

10 I became a soldier... 2nd Battalion, 60th Infantry Regiment PVT. ALEXANDRIA CHANDLER, 21 Plains, Kansas most to join the Army is my desire to save lives. My ultimate goal is to become a Army nurse. No, the Army isn t what I thought it would be. It is a lot more emotionally and physically challenging than I thought it would be. In Basic Combat Training I struggled with some medical issues, it was hard for me to overcome but I made it through. I m a 92G Food Service Specialist. In 10 years I still want to be serving in the military and saving lives. I am really looking forward to getting to my unit and being a real Soldier. PVT. BLAKE JOSTAD, 20 Bend, Oregon The desire to do bet- to join the Army. I wasn t happy with what I was do- was a good choice. No, the Army wasn t want I thought it would be before joining; it was much different than I expected. I wasn t expecting to be held to such a high standard so it was a culture shock for me. The most challenging thing about Basic Combat Training for me was the mental stress and long transition from citizen to Soldier. I m a 15T UH-60 Helicopter Repairer. Hopefully in 10 years I ll be a pilot; either in the Army or as a civilian. I am looking forward to all the opportunities the Army has to offer. SPC. CHARLES BUTLER, 24 Jacksonville, Florida The opportunity to achieve my full potential and provide for my family most to join the Army. No, the Army isn t what I expected it to be before I joined. I have learned a lot in a short amount of time and now I feel like I m in my element. The most challenging thing about Basic Combat Training was adapting my attitude and my approach to lead my battle buddies as the Platoon Guide. and eventually traveling the world and developing as a leader and a Soldier. SPC. DANIELLE JACKSON, 23 Justin, Texas I wanted to better my future and make the college process easier for my future children; that s why I joined the Army. I knew it would be tough, but I never thought I could push myself past the limits I thought I had. The most challenging parts of Basic Combat Training were the ruck marches and getting everyone to work together as a team/family. I m a 15T UH-60 Helicopter Repairer. Hopefully in 10 years I ll be working as a crew and door gunner chief for Black Hawks. I look forward to seeing how much I will be able to accomplish. I plan to push myself as far as I can and experience as much of Army life as possible. My experience at Basic Combat Training has been completely worth all the blood, sweat and tears. I worked hard for my upcoming graduation. SPC. JINFAN ZUO, 29 Chicago My citizenship was my wanted to step out of my comfort zone. The Army was what I thought it would be. It was tough but, it made me feel good to be working towards my goal. Both mental and physical challenges put me out of my comfort zone. Basic Combat Training made me face those challenges and I had to keep adjusting myself to catch up with the team. I m a 68M Nutrition Care Specialist. thriving in my military career. I signed my contract in December of 2015; after two and half years of waiting to ship out to Basic my training and graduate. I plan to keep a strong mind and keep going in my military career because everything does not come easy; I will continue to work hard for the opportunity I ve been given. SPC. JUHEE HAN, 21 Philadelphia most to join the Army was the opportunity to receive citizenship in the country I was raised in; even though I was undocumented until DACA. I also wanted the chance to petition for my parents and younger brother to get their citizenships. To be honest, the Army wasn t as hard as I thought it would be. I thought it would be a more harsh; manly environment. However, opportunities are given equally; we were constantly learning to use our mental and physical strengths. The concept of chaos in Basic Combat Training was profound, but we needed it here more than ever to prepare for when we are actually down range. The drill sergeants aren t doing what they do for fun; they do it because there is a method to the madness. I m a 92M Mortuary Affairs Specialist. In 10 years, I see myself having graduated from Physician Assistant School and working as a combat medic in the Army.

11 Community Strengths and Themes assessment Leader Staff Reports The Community Health Promotion Council is asking the Fort Jackson community to take about minutes to complete the Community Strengths and Themes Assessment survey at amedd.army.mil/survey/ se.ashx?s= ddcc5a4. This is a volunteer survey designed to capture the community member s feelings on quality of life, health, safety, and satisfaction within the environment of an Army installation. It is an anonymous survey. It will ask you some demographic information which is used to ensure we have representatives from all groups. These questions are asked of all groups (Family members, DA Civilians, retirees, and Soldiers). Completion of the survey assists Brig. Gen. Milford Beags Beagle Jr. in determining the adequacy of our existing resources and identify additional needs on the installation. NEWS

12 Drill Continued from Page 3 When I was a private in formation I had no clue I was going to one day be the commandant of the drill sergeant school, then later the academy or that I would be a command sergeant major, that was not my vision; I just wanted to be a good private and you all are the reason that we re going to have future generals come out of your formations. Christian added that the POI symposium attendees displayed the two key ingredients necessary to train the leaders of tomorrow. There are two things we look for especially in this environment; compliance and commitment, he said. You all demonstrated compliance because you go out there and continue to survive in your job, by coming here; participating, giving input and information and giving the feedback to help create change; you have demonstrated commitment. Christian requested that the attendees go back and deliver the message to their installations. I feel good that we are in good hands for future command sergeants major, he added. Sgt. Maj. Mitchell hit it on the head; we are training tomorrow s leaders. All I ask is, that you go back as the messenger and get the rest of our team mates to understand that you are complying all day; ask them show you where the commitment is at. While the chaplain is a non-combatant, the religious affairs specialist is responsible for the security of the team, and is fully trained in Soldier tasks and religious support matters. Today, there are chaplains and religious affairs specialists serving the Army in active duty, Reserve and National Guard units around the world.
