A journeyman saddler as well as historian, Stuart Lilie directs tours, demonstrations, horticulture, historic trades, and maritime programs at Fort Ticonderoga. Saturday, September 24, :00 Welcome. Beth Hill, President and CEO, Fort Ticonderoga 9:15-10:00 The Canadian Campaign and the March toward American Independence While most narratives of the revolution dismiss the American invasion of Canada as an unsuccessful campaign of limited military or political consequence, defeat can often be as significant as triumph. This talk will explore how the Canadian Campaign changed the course of the war and shaped revolutionary mentalities on the eve of independence. Amy Noel Ellison is a Ph.D. candidate at Boston University. 10:15-11:00 Abductions in the American Revolution The tactic of kidnapping enemy leaders, used in the recent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, dates to the American Revolution. George Washington supported efforts to kidnap the British commander-in-chief (twice), the traitor Benedict Arnold, and a future King of Great Britain. Washington as well was targeted twice. At Albany, Philip Schuyler came within a whisker of being kidnapped by British secret service operatives. Christian McBurney is an independent historian who has written books and articles on the Revo

2 Saturday, September 24, 2016 continued lutionary War, including his recently released, Abductions in the American Revolution: Attempts to Kidnap George Washington, Benedict Arnold and Other Military and Civilian Leaders. 11:15-12:00 Ransoms for Some of our Friends at Boston : The British Garrison of Fort Ticonderoga in American Captivity What happened to Captain William Delaplace and the men of the British garrison of Fort Ticonderoga after their capture in May 1775? What does their treatment in American custody tell us about the revolutionaries' conceptions of legitimate wartime practice? This paper analyzes the garrison's captivity within the contexts of contemporary European military culture and republican political culture. T. Cole Jones is an assistant professor of early American history at Purdue University and the National Endowment for the Humanities Fellow at the New-York Historical Society. 12:15-1:45 Lunch Break. (Box lunch from America s Fort Café included) 1:00-1:30 Book Signing at the Museum Store in the Log House. 2:00-2:45 Making It Up in Vermont: The Military Career of Ethan Allen Why did the U.S. Navy name a 410- foot nuclear submarine in honor of Ethan Allen, who never held an active commission outside of the Vermont militia? Vermont s icon and the captor or Fort Ticonderoga, Ethan Allen has a reputation that far surpasses his military accomplishments. Historian and retired state agency head, college president, and foundation CEO, H. Nicholas Muller III is a historian and retired stage agency head, college president, and foundation CEO. He is the coauthor, with John J. Duffy, of Inventing Ethan Allen. 3:00-3:45 No Slavery and No Stamps : African Americans and the Stamp Act Crisis In 1765, as colonial communities exploded in riot to protest the Stamp Act, what were the responses of free and enslaved African Americans? Examining street-level accounts from port towns stretching from New England to the West Indies, this talk explores their choices highlighting questions of these individuals as both social actors and political icons. On the 250th Anniversary of the Stamp Act Crisis, this lecture will demonstrate how the actions of African Americans directly impacted strategies of colonial protest and informed an emerging debate over who belonged in the body politic during the American Revolution. Molly Perry is a lecturer at Christopher Newport University and a PhD Candidate at the College of William and Mary. 4:00-5:00 Fort Ticonderoga Museum, King s Garden, and Museum Store open. 5:00 Dinner at America s Fort Café (pre-registration only). 7:00 Lord Dunmore's War: Last Indian Conflict of the Colonial Era This presentation explains the causes and course of the last Indian War fought by colonial militia in the king's service before the start of the American War for Independence. It will also inform participants and dispel many "myths" about the organization, composition, and tactical doctrine of Virginia's colonial militia before the Revolutionary War. Glenn F. Williams is a retired military officer who now works as a senior historian at the U.S. Army Center of Military History at Fort McNair, Sunday, September 25, :15-10:00 John Stark: General Trouble Stark was a highly effective combat commander in the Revolution, the scourge of his enemies. Some of his superior officers thought he caused as much trouble for them as for the enemy. John Polhemus is a retired aeronautical engineer; his brother Richard Polhemus is a retired lawyer. Stark: The Life and Wars of John Stark French & Indian War Ranger, Revolutonary War General is the third book they have written together. 10:15-11:00 "Making Loyalty a Sure Game:" The Politics of Allegiance in British-Occupied Cities Caught between having to profess loyalty to the crown while maintaining connections to family members and friends in rebel-held areas, Americans living in cities occupied by the British army had to make difficult and often contradictory decisions about their allegiances. This talk investigates the ambiguities of individual loyalty in occupied towns, detailing how these people navigated between competing demands on their loyalty and how they developed sophisticated strategies to obtain essential supplies, protect loved ones, and ensure their survival under the harsh conditions of military rule. Donald F. Johnson is an assistant professor of early American history at North Dakota State University.

3 11:15-12:00 The Country is Full of Prisoners of War : British and German Captives during the War for Independence The Revolutionary War saw the emergence of a fragile and far-flung Continental detention network as members of the American resistance struggled to contain their enemy prisoners and secure their newly declared independence from Great Britain. Ken Miller, Associate Professor of History and Director of American Studies at Washington College, explores the implications of revolutionaries' varied dealings with their British and German captives during the closing years of the War for Independence.
