6 Presentation & Workshop Descriptions CONT. MONDAY NOVEMBER 2, 2015 CONT. STANDING IN THE EYE OF THE STORM 1:30 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. Breakout Sessions Capitol Ballroom C&D Presenter: Missy O Linn, Manning & Kass Excellence in leadership in law enforcement today requires great fortitude and a depth of understanding of the significant issues facing communities in general and law enforcement specifically. Law enforcement defense attorney Missy O Linn will share her experience dealing with high profile law enforcement litigation and incidents focusing on key concerns and challenges for law enforcement. Areas of discussion will include: Preparing for the Law Enforcement Tsunami: Disaster Planning for the Storm Ahead; Understanding and Meeting Expectations: Theirs, Ours and Your Own; Decontaminating the Jury Pool: Public Outreach and Department Imaging and Branding; BWCs, the First Amendment vs. Public Records Act and the Public s Right to Know; Re-Engineering Use of Force Training: Cop Ninjas?; and, Keeping It Real In the Eye of the Storm. CLOSING PLENARY: FAIR & IMPARTIAL POLICING 3:30 p.m. 5:00 p.m. Presenter: Lt. Sandra Brown (ret.), Fair & Impartial Policing LLC Around the country, traditional racial-profiling training programs have been based on outdated understandings about prejudice. Many such training programs have conveyed the message, stop being prejudiced, with an emphasis on reducing animus toward stereotyped groups. From the science, we now know that this message is ill-suited for most individuals in modern society, including most individuals in policing, who may not have explicit prejudices. Further and more important, individuals receiving such messages can be offended producing a backlash against these efforts. The Fair and Impartial Policing (FIP) training program applies the modern science of bias to policing; it trains officers on the effect of implicit bias and gives them the information and skills they need to reduce and manage their biases. The curricula address, not just racial/ethnic bias, but biases based on other factors, such as gender, sexual orientation, religion, socio-economic status and so forth. These curricula are founded on the following fundamental principles: All people, even well-intentioned people, have biases Having biases is normal to human functioning Biases are often unconscious or implicit, thus influencing choices and actions without conscious thinking or decision-making Policing based on biases or stereotypes is unsafe, ineffective and unjust. Fair and impartial policing is a cornerstone of procedural justice and important for the achievement of agency legitimacy. Officers can learn skills to reduce and manage their own biases. Supervisors can learn skills to identify biased behavior in their direct reports and take corrective actions when they detect biased policing Law enforcement executives and their commandlevel staff can implement a comprehensive agency program to produce fair and impartial policing. 6 Tenth Annual Women Leaders in Law Enforcement Training Symposium

7 TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 3, 2015 SPEED COACHING 8:30 a.m. 10:00 a.m. Breakout Sessions One of WLLE s most popular sessions! Speed coaching assembles leaders from various ranks as well as professional managers to provide attendees smallgroup mentoring from different levels. Attendees can choose to sit in the Chiefs area, the Command Level area (Captains/Lieutenants/Commanders), the Firstline Supervisors area (Sergeants, Corporals), or the Professional Supervisors area (Dispatch Manager, Civilian Commander, Records Manager, etc.). As in the past, the attendees would remain at their tables and the coaches would rotate at a specific time. IT S WHAT YOU DO NEXT THAT MATTERS 8:30 a.m. 10:00 a.m. Breakout Sessions Capitol Ballroom Presenter: Officer Julie Werhnyak, Tempe Police Department/Artemis Self Defense A 911 call suddenly became a life and death encounter for Officer Julie Werhnyak of the Tempe, Arizona Police Department when a Domestic Violence suspect ambushed her in the dark and stabbed her in the neck with a large hunting knife! Julie, who was involved in the subsequent shooting of the suspect, will tell her riveting story and share with you how her prior mental, physical and tactical training prepared her to survive this lethal encounter. Julie will also discuss lessons learned in the aftermath of the incident. CRITICAL INCIDENT PANEL 10:30 a.m. -12:00 pm Breakout Sessions Capitol Ballroom Join this year s panel as they discuss a recent critical incident in the local area. The panel will include the Dispatcher, Sergeant and two Lieutenants involved in a multi-county incident. The panelists will each discuss their role in the incident and how they worked together to resolve. The audience will have the opportunity to ask questions of the panelists. FIND THE RIGHT FUEL FOR YOUR HIGH STRESS JOB: EAT BETTER, SLEEP BETTER, WORK BETTER AND LIVE BETTER 10:30 a.m. -12:00 pm Breakout Sessions California Ballroom Presenter: Nicole Picknell, Nutritional Therapy Practitioner, Firefighter/Paramedic Many first responders deal with long hours, busy shifts and stressful, high intensity conditions. They must think quickly, act quickly and have a body and mind that responds from 0 to hero in a moment s notice. This can ONLY be accomplished with proper fuel for the body. We often put work, citizens and family ahead of our own health needs. We spend long shifts with little fuel for the brain and the body. This course includes recipes, meal plans and ideas to feed the attendees and their family s good food. CLOSING PLENARY: TAMING THE IMPOSTER 12:15 p.m. 2:30 p.m. Presenter: Kristen Ziman, Commander, Aurora (Illinois) PD The best leaders of our time are those who have faced ridicule and critics while still maintaining the courage to carry on. To become a great leader, one must understand first and foremost that it s a lifetime journey but lessons and actions applied daily move us one step closer. The first step in leading others is to acknowledge and then discard the notion that you must act a certain way. Most people never get past this foundational idea and fall squarely into acting the way we believe we should based on the templates others have carved. When we move away from our authentic selves, we morph into an imposter and over time, we lose the parts of us that actually make us better at leading and living. Taming the Imposter is your journey in leadership and life and how learning to embrace both your weirdness and your critics will make you a happier person and a better leader.
