5 Presentation & Workshop Descriptions MONDAY, OCTOBER 7, 2013 OPENING PLENARY PORCH SWING LEADERSHIP LEADING FROM WITHIN LEADERSHIP ROUNDTABLE 8:30 am to 10:00 am Janice is a brilliant storyteller with a knack for finding humor in the most unlikely situations, delivering powerful concepts through suspense laden true life stories from her colorful career as an undercover agent, SWAT team member, and hostage negotiator. Janice will show you how to break down the doors that limit you and your staff from realizing their full potential. Nowhere else will you find this rare blend of personal leadership, grounded in values that forward organizational health and personal power. Janice cuts to the chase, delivering high-impact, content rich tools, strategies, and a common sense approach, leaving you armed with a tactical advantage as a leader in life. Take the rare opportunity to be in the room with chiefs, sheriffs and CHP leaders as they discuss their thinking and approaches to challenges facing all of law enforcement. Enhance your understanding of how chief executives evaluate and act on current and important law enforcement issues. Presenter: Janice Niederhofer SWAT SPECIAL WEAPONS & TACTICS FOR LIFE 10:45 am to 12:15 pm Regency 1 Janice will disclose her special weapons and tactics for being the best YOU in any situation. This special workshop session will be open and informal addressing what really works both at work and in your personal life. Presenter: Janice Niederhofer 10:45 am to 12:15 pm Regency 2 Facilitator: Chief Scott Seaman, Los Gatos Presenters include representatives from police departments, sheriff s departments and CHP. CYBER BULLYING AND DIGITAL MEDIA ISSUES 1:30 pm to 3:00 pm Regency 1 At the end of this 90 minute presentation the attendees will have a solid grasp on what Cyber Bullying is, the legal and accepted definitions of CB and where law enforcement throughout the nation is going with it. The presentation is based upon a POST certified 8-hour course which was designed to provide officers and other personnel who deal directly with school-aged children the tools necessary to identify, deal with, and prevent harassment of juveniles by electronic means. Lawrence and Hearn will discuss how to apply laws, the programs available to assist nationwide and how to get involved at your Department. This presentation will give delegates a starting point to get involved and open their eyes to the issues facing today s youth. Presenters: Lieutenant Tracy Hearn and Officer Holly Lawrence, Sunnyvale DPS October 6-8, 2013 San Jose 5

6 Presentation & Workshop Descriptions CONTINUED CRITICAL INCIDENT PANEL 1:30 pm to 3:00 pm Regency 2 This workshop panel will consist of a mix of sworn and professional leaders from various different divisions of law enforcement. The panel will focus on the importance of building connections and relationships prior to a critical incident and describe the success of the outcome of the incident based on those established connections. Presenters: Val Tanguay, Retired, San Bernardino County SO (facilitator); Cindee Bachman, PIO, San Bernardino County SO; Cathy Scherer, Sergeant, Irvine PD; Victoria Hertado, Detective, Irvine PD; Mary Weiler, Dispatch Supervisor, San Bernardino SO FEMALE FORCES: TRAINING WOMEN TO LEAD 3:45 pm to 5:15 pm Betsy will lead attendees through a discussion of gender intelligence and gender equity, including the differences in physiology, brain function and communication differences. Her emphasis will be on reinforcing women as leaders and not cheerleaders, how to avoid the victim mentality, the danger of hindsight bias and optimism. Betsy will leave you ready to inspire, lead and mentor. Presenter: Betsy Brantner-Smith TUESDAY, OCTOBER 8, 2013 LEADERSHIP THROUGH THE CAPACITY TO CONNECT 8:30 am to 10:00 am Managers will find competitive advantage by tapping employees most essential humanity, their ability to create and build relationships. (Geoffrey Colvin wrote in Fortune Magazine, 2000.) In addition to overseeing processes, and ensuring productivity, efficiency and compliance, today s leaders, no longer able to rely on their positional status alone, must also develop strong relationship-building and mentoring skills. This is especially so with the increasing diversity of the workforce, including emerging women leaders who must confront new challenges such as secondgeneration gender bias. Good managers challenge their teams, good mentors connect with them. Great leaders inspire people by connecting with them and challenging them simultaneously. The first step in becoming a great leader is to move paradigms from leadership as manager, to leadership as mentor too. From Manager to Mentor will offer the tools that are necessary to incorporate both roles for a law enforcement professional. Building on this idea of connecting and building relationships with employees, a leader needs to employ trust-building skills to inspire efficiency and performance instead of using the power of their status. Communication is a key component. We will identify the three dimensions of leadership and how a leader can amplify her message through Authority, Impact and Presence. Presenter: Sunny Lee-Goodman LEADERSHIP: TALKING THE TALK 10:45 am to 12:15 pm Regency 1 Good leaders: Live the values that motivate them Inspire people to work together toward their shared vision Give clear directions and explanations in order to get there Give their people kind and useful feedback Ask the right questions then listen to the answers 6 Eighth Annual Women Leaders in Law Enforcement Training Symposium

7 In other words, good leaders are good communicators! In this highly interactive workshop, participants will learn and practice specific communication skills and behaviors guaranteed to improve their leadership capabilities. Presenter: Eris Weaver BE A LEADER IN HEALTH AND WELLNESS 10:45 am to 12:15 pm Regency 2 The current culture of America is one where poor eating habits is the norm and exercising is the anomaly. As women, we often set the standard and example in our households and as women in law enforcement, you often must go above and beyond to be accepted and recognized in a male-dominated field. Furthermore, police officers are often viewed as leaders in our community. You will all excel and achieve many things in your law enforcement career. Some of you will provide leadership in one capacity or another - to your family and to the officers you work with and to the community that you serve. However, ALL of you can provide leadership in the #1 thing that is most important in all of our lives... OUR HEALTH. If we are not healthy, we cannot be the moms, wives, sisters and daughters that we can and should be. If you are not healthy, you cannot do your job as an officer in the way you could or should. Modeling a healthy lifestyle is providing leadership in a realm that is of utmost importance since it transforms all aspects of our life. The purpose of my seminar will be to discuss the importance of living a healthy lifestyle as well as practical advice on HOW to live a healthy life within the craziness of our world. NURTURING THE INVISIBLE LEADER 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm The closing plenary will summarize the 2013 Women Leaders in Law Enforcement Symposium s theme of Sharing Strategies for Success as explored throughout the three-day conference. The plenary attendees will hear a first-hand leadership message from someone who has navigated the path from invisible to highly visible leader. Because everything in life involves leadership, whether it is about the leader, the developing leader, those being led, or the process of leadership, it is important to have a short list of guiding principles which guide our actions. Where it counts, it all boils down to the quality of the effort and that effort is the work involved in leadership. Understanding leadership, developing leaders, and leading are all different activities. To better understand how to develop leaders and leadership characteristics, one has to understand some fairly consistent but quite simple rules. And the first rule involves know thyself. Based on Chief Seabrooks personal and professional experience, this plenary session on Nurturing the Invisible Leader will serve as a motivational and inspirational message for the session s attendees by providing the attendees with a series of time-tested, common sense tips and rules of thumb which can serve as a foundation for nurturing the invisible or hidden leader in ourselves and others as we navigate our personal and professional journeys. Presenter: Chief Jacqueline Seabrooks, Santa Monica Presenter: Dr. Felicia Gomez October 6-8, 2013 San Jose 7
