1 Date Established: Revised: Classification Code: 072/073 Unit: SLCEA FLSA: Non-exempt Range: 63/68 EEOC: 007 Maintenance Mechanic I/II Definition: Performs routine and general maintenance mechanical work at the Water Pollution Control Plant facilities, including wastewater and storm lift stations and other field locations. Incumbents perform a variety of skilled and unskilled tasks including equipment installations, maintenance and repair, construction, plumbing, cement work and heavy equipment operation; performs related work as required. Distinguishing Characteristics: Performs semi-skilled tasks requiring a working knowledge of plumbing, construction, welding, mechanical equipment and maintenance repair, heavy equipment operation and other maintenance functions as required. Troubleshoots and repairs plant and field location equipment. level is distinguished from I level by the more routine tasks performed and the lower degree of responsibility and authority. I Performs a variety of skilled tasks including plumbing, welding, equipment repair and construction in connection with the maintenance of facilities; acts in a lead capacity; ensures proper use of equipment and safety procedures at job sites; ensures acceptable quality of work performed; ensures project work meets industry standards; maintains computer database on all work orders; trains and participates in the review and evaluation of entry-level employees and performs related work as required. The I is distinguished from by the higher level of skills and responsibility. Assignment to I level is normally made from level from incumbents who have successfully completed in-house competency evaluations. Supervision Exercised and Received: This position exercises no supervision. Receives general supervision from a section supervisor and lead direction from higher level staff. I Provides lead direction over lower level staff. Receives limited supervision from a section supervisor. Maintenance Mechanic I/II

2 Essential Functions: The essential functions of the classification may include, but are not limited to, the functions below and are subject to changes in operational necessity. Assists in troubleshooting, constructing, installing, repairing and servicing industrial equipment such as pumps, motors, valves, compressors, blowers, gauges, controls, metering equipment, drives, grinders, level indicators and other plant equipment; Assists in installing, maintaining, repairing and replacing all of the piping and pumping systems which serve the plant, wastewater and storm lift stations, EBDA Dechlorinization Station and other field locations; Updates computer database on all work orders; Assists in completing concrete, carpentry, masonry and metal fabrication work incidental to maintenance projects; Follows all safety rules and protocols included in the Injury and Illness Prevention Program; takes appropriate action as required to identify and correct safety hazards and report safety concerns to his/her supervisor; Operates or assists in the use of tools such as jack hammers, cranes, backhoes, tampers and front end loaders; Lubricates equipment to maintain working condition of equipment; Assists with the replacement of building fixtures, flooring, lighting and orders building maintenance supplies as needed; Prepares surfaces for painting and paints/coats the required area; Performs unskilled and semi-skilled routine maintenance troubleshooting and major repairs as required at the Plant, wastewater and storm lift stations, EBDA Dechlorinization Station and other field locations; Assists in demolishing and removing damaged concrete structures, slabs and piles; Performs required duties under the City s disaster response plan; Responds to emergency situations or calls out on an on-call basis; and Performs preventive and corrective tasks as required. I Inspects, diagnoses and performs major and minor repair work on motors, pumps, boilers, hydraulic equipment, generators, filters, incinerators and other plant equipment; Trains new maintenance employees in the proper techniques in equipment repair, plumbing, welding, construction and heavy equipment operation; Ensures that the crew uses proper safety procedures while ensuring that tasks are done in a timely and effective manner to met division objectives; Troubleshoots, installs and repairs a wide range of equipment such as pumps, motors and valves; Works in demolishing and safely removing concrete structures, reinforcements, slabs, clay pipes, etc.; Troubleshoots equipment operation by reviewing instrumentation and controls; calibrates chemical feed analyzers and controllers; Maintains equipment inventory, orders and replaces equipment and supplies; /II Page 2

3 Maintains and updates computer database on all work orders; Services equipment such as gauges, controls, and metering equipment and level indicators; Installs, maintains, repairs and replaces plumbing and piping systems which serve the plant wastewater and storm lift stations, EBDA Dechlorinization Station and other field locations; Provides routine maintenance for motors, pumps, compressors, blowers, drives and other plant equipment; Performs research on equipment applications and availability; provides supervisor with equipment specifications, vendors and the pricing of replacement parts, equipment and supplies; Follows all safety rules and protocols included in the Injury and Illness Prevention Program; takes appropriate action as required to identify and correct safety hazards and report safety concerns to his/her supervisor; Performs required duties under the City s disaster response plan; Performs essential functions included within classification specification as required; and Performs skilled routine maintenance, troubleshooting and major repair as required at the plant, wastewater and storm lift stations, EBDA Dechlorination Station and other field locations. Non-essential Functions: Performs other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications: Knowledge of: Equipment maintenance, troubleshooting and repair, plumbing and piping systems, construction work, heavy equipment operation and welding; Standard practices, materials, tools and equipment used in the mechanical or electrical repair of minor mechanical equipment systems; Building maintenance and construction work; Standard maintenance practices and safety standards; and Confined space entry equipment. I Standard practices, materials, tools and equipment used in the mechanical or electrical repair of more advanced mechanical equipment systems; Knowledge of various types of valves used at the Plant and the principles for proper application; Proper surface preparation, paint and coatings and drying bed maintenance; and Confined space entry equipment. /II Page 3

4 Ability to: Perform routine maintenance tasks; Work independently under general supervision; Use and care for tools and equipment; Perform preventive and corrective maintenance; Complete assigned work in a safe and effective manner while meeting division objectives; Establish, maintain and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; Read labels and Hazardous Materials Safety Data Sheets for chemicals and other written materials; Operate heavy equipment; Perform varied welding tasks; Use a computer; and Use confined space entry equipment including gas monitors, retractable lanyard, personal protective equipment and Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA). I Read and interpret blueprints, sketches and diagrams; Work with high voltage equipment and machinery; Act as crew leader when required; Pump and valve maintenance and repair, miscellaneous equipment maintenance, repair and troubleshooting, piping/plumbing, welding, heavy equipment operation and construction/demolition; Use confined space entry equipment including gas monitors, retractable lanyard, personal protective equipment and Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA); and Perform the duties of a at an advanced level. Education: High school diploma or certified equivalent (GED). Experience: Two years work experience involving equipment maintenance, repair and troubleshooting, plumbing, construction and heavy equipment operation. I Education: High school diploma or certified equivalent (GED). Assignment to I level is normally made from level incumbents who have successfully completed in-house competency evaluations. /II Page 4

5 Experience: Three years of experience involving equipment maintenance, repair and troubleshooting, plumbing, construction and heavy equipment operation. Experience in a wastewater treatment plant is highly desired. Licenses/certifications/other requirements: Must be willing to work such hours as are necessary to accomplish the job requirements; travel to attend meetings; seminars and conferences. Classification requires the possession and continued maintenance of a valid class C California driver s license for operating a motor vehicle. Possession and maintenance of CPR and First Aid certification. Possession by the end of probationary period and maintenance of a California Water Environment Association (CWEA) Plant Maintenance Grade I Mechanical Technology and Electrical/Instrumentation certificate. I Possession by the end of probationary period and maintenance of a California Water Environment Association (CWEA) Plant Maintenance Grade II Mechanical Technology and Electrical/Instrumentation certificate.
