Phoenix Division / T.S. Battleship Arizona Newsletter Celebrating 50 Years in the Sea Cadets Monday September 10 th is the 50 th birthday of the Naval Sea Cadet Corps. Initially formed in 1958, the program was officially recognized and chartered by an act of Congress on Sept. 10 th, There has been an active Naval Sea Cadet unit drilling in Phoenix since To celebrate this milestone in our program history, National Headquarters has authorized the wearing of the NSCC 50 th Anniversary ribbon. This ribbon will be authorized for wear for all personnel who are currently enrolled in the Sea Cadet or Navy League programs as on September 10 th You are part of a long standing naval tradition that dates back hundreds of years to countries around the world. Be proud of this program and what it represents and be able to tell people about it. It is always a good idea to be able to provide them additional information as well. You can contact LCDR Turner for recruiting materials and information about the program, or just some business cards with contact information to hand to people. If you don t have anything to give to someone, you can always send them to the Sea Cadet website at or our unit website at for more. It has all the latest up to date information about what is going on with the unit for this month. Tell your friends at school about Sea Cadets. If you would like to set up a recruiting day for your school, contact Lieutenant (jg) Cartland, or Lieutenant Commander Turner for more information. Watch, Quarter and Station Bill Be on the lookout this drill weekend for the Watch, Quarter, and Station Bill (WQSB). What is a Watch, Quarter, and Station Bill? The WQSB is used to assign specific jobs to personnel in navy units. For us it also identifies where to go or what to do during various emergencies and evolutions such as fire drills or marching formations. The Operations Department and specifically the Quartermaster are responsible for updating and maintaining the WQ&S Bill. Check for your name and see where you are supposed to be and what you are supposed to do when the time comes. If information is incorrect on it, contact the Leading Petty Officer, PO2 Bland to get it corrected. The Watch Quarter and Station Bill will be posted inside the main hall near the Quarterdeck. Let the Colors Shine We have three color guard opportunities coming up. Our first color guard of the season is on Sunday September 9 th at 48 th annual Military Order of the World Wars Massing of the Colors and Service of Remembrance, held at Carl Hayden High School. Cadets on the color guard need to be there by 1:00pm. The 108 th Army Band begins playing at 2:00pm and the program begins at 2:30. Ask your friends and neighbors to come see this very patriotic presentation. On Saturday October 6 th ALL HANDS will be marching in our first parade, the Glendale Fire Prevention Parade in downtown Glendale. It is important to present the colors in our community. Not only does it provide an important, patriotic service, it also promotes the Naval Sea Cadet program and encourages others to get involved. For cadets who complete a total of 5 color guard events, you will receive the Color Guard ribbon. If you know of an event at your school, church, or other community event that they would like us to present the colors for, please contact the Color Guard Commander, PO3 Koyenova or the Executive Officer, PS1 Johnson so we can get it setup.

3 Tips for Drill Don t forget to bring a pen and a small notepad you can keep in your pocket. Complete your coursework and bring it to drill to turn in. Stay on Track. All Cadets should complete and turn in at least 2 or more assignments every month. Fill out all permission slips and paperwork given to you completely and plan on turning them in first thing Saturday morning of drill if not sooner. 4 The Gouge Page 4 More Tips for Drill Make sure EVERYTHING you bring to drill is marked with your name so that someone else doesn t accidentally pick up your stuff by mistake. Don t forget to pack a lunch. We have refrigerators and microwaves available. One of the items required for all new recruits completing Level 1 PQS is to bring a copy of this newsletter to drill and show it to a staff officer so they can sign off that you have completed it. This Month in Naval History SEP 2, Japan signs surrender documents on board USS Missouri (BB-63) at anchor in Tokyo Bay. Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, USN, signs for the U.S.. In different ceremonies, Japanese forces on Palau Islands, Truk, and on Pagan Island and Rota in the Marianas surrender. SEP 5, USS Acadia (AD-42) departs San Diego for the first war-time deployment of a male-female crew on a combat vessel. SEP 10, In Battle of Lake Erie, Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry, flying his "Don't Give Up the Ship" flag, defeats the British squadron and says: "We have met the enemy and they are ours..." SEP 23, Captain John Paul Jones in the Continental Navy frigate Bonhomme Richard captures the HMS Serapis. SEP 28, Congress outlaws flogging on Navy ships. Change of Command Held The Phoenix Division held a brief change of command ceremony at Hensley and Company as the first event of the school year during August drill. After a brief command inspection, Warrant Officer Tony Cartland was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade. After some final comments to the Phoenix Division cadets from LCDR Turner, the two officers each read their orders aloud in front of the crew as is the tradition in the Navy. They then turned to face each other and said the words we all say when relieving the watch: LCDR Turner: I am ready to be relieved. LTJG Cartland: I relieve you. LCDR Turner: I stand relieved. Once completed, LTJG Cartland became the 10 th Commanding Officer of the Phoenix Division. The officers reported to the Associate Regional Director, LT Dalpe that the command had been properly relieved. LCDR Turner will continue as the Commanding Officer of the Battleship Arizona, focusing on rebuilding the NLCC cadets and helping out the Sea Cadets when needed. Congratulations to you both and best success in your new positions! Fundraising Fun Bowl-A-Rama! The 2012 Bowl-A-Rama is coming up on September 29 th at the AMF Thunderbird Lanes located on Thunderbird Rd just west of the I-17 Freeway from Pledges can be done by the pin or as a flat fee. Cadets will receive their pledge sheets and instructions on how to get pledges at September drill or they can download them from the unit website when available. Let s get out there and make some money. Fund raising events like this one help us to get the money we need to help pay for campouts, travel to places like San Diego and other outings. 5 Here are the three most important words you will hear at drill: Hydrate! Hydrate!! Hydrate!!! Please make sure you bring a canteen, camelback or water bottle that has your name on it so it doesn t get lost. ATTENTION PARENTS!!! WE NEED YOU!!! We are looking for parents who can help support the Sea Cadets. If you can help, please contact the Commanding Officer. Parents Association meetings are held every Sunday of Drill at 2:00pm. Come Join us and see how you can help. The Gouge Page 5 Fleeting Up to the Sea Cadets Once a NLCC Cadet reaches the age of 13, they have the option of fleeting up or transferring to Naval Sea Cadets or continuing on in the League until their 14 th birthday. Once they reach 14 they must either fleet up or ship out. Our next Fleeting Up ceremony won t occur until December when more cadets have reached the right age and have chosen to move upward and onward. Congratulations go out to the following cadets: Andrew Do Chayton Smith Chris Stewart All of these cadets were also promoted to the rate of Seaman Apprentice (temporary) (E-2T) for completing NLCC Orientation. Sea Cadet Recruiting Our next drill will be September 8 th and 9 th at Hensley and Company for both Navy League and Naval Sea Cadets. If you have friends or contacts for people who are interested in the Sea Cadet/Navy League program, invite them over for our orientation meeting starting at 9:00am on Saturday! When they come, have them bring their Social Security number, immunization card, recent report card, health insurance information and $200 to cover enrollment fees, uniforms, and training so they can begin right away. Anyone who brings another person into the program and can keep that person in for at least three months can earn a Recruiting Ribbon for your efforts! Time to Re-Enroll Cadets renewing from last year only pay $100 to renew for the year. Don t forget to bring your parents to the Parents Association meeting! The following Navy Leaguers need to have their ID cards renewed: Ethan Doty Ethan Humrich The following Sea Cadets need to have their ID cards renewed: Roman Shemakov Rylan Doty Branden Seyler Mark Chaydez Double check the back of your ID Card, even if your name is not on this list. If you are within 2 months of re-enrolling, see Inst. Turner about renewing your enrollment. Cadets who let their enrollments expire are not allowed to participate in drills and other Sea Cadet events until their fees are paid and are subject to being dropped from the program.
