You are cordially invited to attend and participate in the above mentioned conference organised by the Maritime Security Programme of the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies, in collaboration with the Center of Oceans Law and Policy, University of Virginia School of Law. It will be held on the 9 th (Wednesday) and 10 th (Thursday) January 2008, at the Orchard Hotel,. This conference will focus on the freedoms of the seas, passage rights and governance of the oceans, all timely and important subjects of particular interests to East Asia and the Pacific region. As the conference is primarily geared towards discussing key issues and challenges in dealing with Passage Regimes, activities in Exclusive Economic Zones and protection of the marine environment, prominent speakers will first deal with the historical perspective on the relevant UNCLOS provisions. Within the broad issue of the freedoms of the seas, specific panels seek to address the rights and jurisdiction of states to conduct and/ or regulate activities in the Exclusive Economic Zones, which include marine scientific research, hydrographic surveys and military activities. Separate panels with also deal with the different passage regimes in the region. The conference will also examine the rights and jurisdiction of interested states to protect the marine environment and review the different measures available.
