6 COURSE DESCRIPTIONS Section 1 Fire Prevention Inspection II This class is designed for the education and training of code enforcement officials who have the responsibility of inspecting existing buildings. Participants will gain understanding of the NC Fire Prevention Code and will be able to apply the Code in the inspection field. 32 hours (Wednesday 1:00pm - 5:00pm, Thursday, Friday, Saturday 8:00am 5:00pm, Sunday 9:00am 1:00pm). Instructor: Craig Forlines, Fire Chief Edenton Fire Department, Fire Inspector Level III, Firefighter 2, Fire Officer, NC Fire/Rescue Instructor II, Fire Inspector Instructor, NC Arson Investigator. NOTICE: Students will need a copy of the 2012 NC Fire Code, Adopted from the 2009 International Fire Code, for this class. Section 2 Fire Inspector Con Ed (Fire Inspection Tips - Tents/Sprinkler Systems) This course is designed to give Fire Code Enforcement Officials the understanding of the fundamentals of a start to finish fire inspection of a tent or membrane structure. The student will also develop an enhanced understanding of the fundamentals of a Fire Sprinkler System operation and design, regulating codes and standards, plan review, inspections and acceptance testing. 6 hours (Friday 9:00am 4:00pm). Instructor: Richard Lovick, Assistant Chief/Fire Marshal, Beaufort Fire Department. ** Sections 3 8 Register at to obtain a SID number for NFA classes ** *Section 3 NFA Initial Fire Investigation for First Responders The goal of this course is to empower students with the knowledge to identify and define key concepts of fire dynamics and fire modeling and to develop the ability to apply available tools to fire investigation and prevention. The course will cover introduction for first responder, fire behavior, fire scene examination, fire causes, vehicle fires, and fire cause determination. Instructor: Joe Littleton, 30+ years as certified NFA Instructor in Arson Fire Detection, Arson Detection for 1st Responder, Initial Fire Investigation for First Responders, ISO, STICO, and Leadership courses; NC Fire/Rescue Instructor for Firefighter and Driver Operator classes. *Section 4 NFA Incident Safety Officer This course is designed to provide First Responders with the ability to identify and analyze safety concerns as they relate to all hazard scene evaluations, and communicate recommended solutions to the command authority. This course examines the safety officer s role at emergency response situations. A specific focus on operations within an incident command system as a safety officer is a main theme. Instructor: Mike Ensley, Retired EM Coordinator, Cullowhee Fire Department, NFA Instructor, NC Fire/Rescue Instructor II. *Section 5 NFA Leadership I This course is designed to introduce basic leadership skills and techniques to improve company effectiveness and performance. Topics covered in the course include: techniques and approaches to problem solving, assessing the needs of subordinates, running meetings effectively in the fire service environment and decisionmaking strategies. Instructor: John White, Training Coordinator Town of Apex Fire Department, *Section 6 NFA Leadership II This course is designed to introduce basic leadership skills and techniques to enhance the company officer s efficiency. The course focuses on use and abuse of power at the company officer level, creativity in the fire service environment and managing the multiple roles of the company officer. Instructor: Brian Mims, City of Fayetteville Fire/Emergency Management Department, NC Fire/Rescue Instructor, NFA Instructor. Section 7 NFA PICO (Planning for Initial Co Ops) This course is designed to develop the decision making skills essential to Company Officers. The Company Officer must make informed decisions that affect the outcome of any emergency incident. A Company Officer should fully understand the ICS organization and the position assigned to function effectively and help the system work. Instructor: Perry Hall. *Section 8 - NFA Shaping the Future This course will enable participants to employ creative approaches to identify trends that have an impact on their organizations and apply problem-solving methods to continuously improve fire and EMS services. The course gives an understanding to the reasons employees resist change and how to develop strategies for implementing changes. Instructor: Kevin McDonald, Captain-Professional Development, New Hanover County Fire Rescue. Section 9 First Due Engine This course is designed to look at a variety of aspects that an officer or first due company may encounter upon arriving at a fire scene. Class discussion involves strategies and incident scenarios from the critical first minutes on a scene to firefighter fatalities. This class is open to all firefighters, but is especially important to the command officer. 12 hours (Saturday 8:00am 5:00pm, Sunday 9:00am 1:00pm). 7 NOTICE: Sections 10 & 11 will run concurrently for students needing both classes. Section 10 NIMS 300 This course provides greater description and details of the Incident Command System (ICS) organization and operations, including application of essential principles and description of air operations. There are five modules: Organizations and Staffing, Organizing for Incidents and Events, Resources Management, Air Operations and Incident and Event Planning. This course includes a final exam. Prerequisites: ICS-100, ICS-200, and ICS-700. PLEASE NOTE: In addition to returning the CFCC registration form and your registration fee, you must register with NCEM to receive your NCEM Certificate from NC Emergency Management. Please note the $35.00 registration fee is NOT waived or reimbursed for this course.18 hours (Thursday 8:00am - 7:00pm, Friday 8:00pm - 5:00pm). Instructor: Mike Stophel, Operations Battalion Chief New Hanover County Fire/Rescue Service, 20 years experience in the fire service. Section 11 NIMS 400 This course emphasizes large-scale organization development, roles and relationships of the primary staff, the planning, operational, logistical and fiscal consideration related to a large and complex, incident and event management. It describes the application of Area Command and the importance of interagency coordination during complex incidents and events. This course includes a final exam. Prerequisites: ICS-100, ICS-200, and ICS-300. Section 12 Haz Mat Level One Responder (NC Certification) This course includes lecture and practice activities needed to safely and effectively meet the training requirements for Hazardous Materials Level One Responder credential. 36 hours (Wednesday, Thursday, Friday & Saturday 8:00am - 5:00pm, Sunday 9:00am - 1:00pm). Full Turnout Gear and SCBA Required. Instructor: Mike Tinkham, Training Solutions, LLC. Section 13 Orientation & Safety (NC Certification) This course will enable the firefighter to become aware of the advanced operations of the department and understand their position in the organization from a more detailed perspective. Topics will include a review of safety regulations and firefighter s responsibility to comply; departmental safety program; and the hazards related to fire protection. 16 hours (Friday 7:00pm - 10:00pm, Saturday 8:00am - 5:00pm, Sunday 8:00am - 1:00pm). Full Turnout Gear and SCBA Required. Instructor: Chris Hunt, CFCC Instructor, 27 years in the fire service, 17 years as fire, law and EMS instructor. Section 14 Alarms & Communications (NC Certification) This class is designed to teach candidates the policies and procedures concerning the ordering and transmitting of emergency alarms and the actions to be taken upon receipt of the alarms. 16 hours (Friday 7:00pm - 10:00pm, Saturday 8:00am - 5:00pm, Sunday 8:00am - 1:00pm). This class will travel off site to the 911 center, transportation not provided. Instructor: Louis Blanchard, Town of Southern Pines Fire/Rescue, Deputy Fire Marshall, NC Fire/Rescue Instructor. Section 15 Fire Behavior (NC Certification) This course will enable the firefighter to demonstrate their knowledge of terminology used in the area of fire behavior, the hazards of different fuels, and the types of heat sources. 12 hours (Saturday 8:00am - 5:00pm, Sunday 9:00am - 1:00pm). Instructor: Frank Meyer, Deputy Fire Chief New Hanover County Fire/Rescue Service, 20+ years fire department experience, 7 years industrial firefighting experience, NC Fire/Rescue Instructor. Section 16 Personal Protective Equipment (NC Certification) This certification-related course will present the firefighter candidate with the knowledge, skills, and ability to satisfy the requirements of Chapters Five and Six of NFPA 1001: Standard for Firefighter Professional Qualifications. This course will present the firefighter candidate with the knowledge and skills necessary to comprehend the use of their personal protective equipment, including Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA). 20 hours (Friday 2:00pm - 10:00pm, Saturday 8:00am - 5:00pm, Sunday 9:00am - 1:00pm). Full Turnout Gear and SCBA required. Instructor: Will Murray, 23 year veteran of the fire service, 18 years with New Hanover County Fire/Rescue Service, retired 22 year US Army/combat veteran, NC Fire/Rescue Instructor. Section 17 Forcible Entry (NC Certification) This course is designed to demonstrate methods of forcing entry into structures utilizing different principles and practices. 14 hours (Friday 7:00pm - 10:00pm, Saturday 8:00am - 5:00pm, Sunday 9:00am - 12:00noon). Full Turnout Gear required. Instructor: Matt Moore, Captain, New Hanover County Fire/Rescue Service, NC Fire/Rescue Instructor. Section 18 Ventilation (NC Certification) This course will teach the firefighter different methods of performing safe and effective ventilation principles and practices. 20 hours (Friday 2:00pm - 10:00pm, Saturday 8:00am - 5:00pm, Sunday 8:00am - 1:00pm). Full Turnout Gear and SCBA Required. Instructor: Robert Loreman, Captain, Goldsboro Fire Department, 28 years in the fire service, 17 years as a NC Rescue Instructor. Section 19 Ladders (NC Certification) This course is designed to teach the candidate all aspects of ladder safety, including carrying, raising, lowering, climbing and operating from fire service ladders. 16 hours (Friday 7:00pm - 5

8 10:00pm, Saturday 8:00am - 5:00pm, Sunday 8:00am - 1:00pm). Full Turnout Gear Required. Instructor: Adrian Mignone, Topsail Beach Volunteer Fire Department. Section 20 Loss Control (NC Certification) This course covers both Salvage and Overhaul and is designed to cover indicators of structural instability while finding areas of hidden fires. Scene preservation and property loss techniques will also be discussed. 16 hours (Friday 7:00pm - 10:00pm, Saturday 8:00am - 5:00pm, Sunday 8:00am - 1:00pm). Full Turnout Gear Required. Instructor: Scott Wyland, Captain New Hanover County Fire/Rescue Service. Section 21 Rescue This course will present the firefighter candidate with techniques and safety procedures to be used during a number of rescue activities and will include the proper use of rescue tools and the extrication of entrapped victims from motor vehicles. 20 hours (Friday 2:00pm - 10:00pm, Saturday 8:00am - 5:00pm, Sunday 8:00am - 1:00pm). Full Turnout Gear or attire suitable for rescue work required. Instructors: Colin Simpson, City of Wilmington Fire Captain, Hazardous Materials Technician; Gene Holland, City of Wilmington Master Firefighter, Hazardous Materials Technician. Section 22 Sprinklers (NC Certification) This course covers the various types of sprinkler systems, as well as their components and the reliability of automatic sprinkler systems. 16 hours (Friday 7:00pm - 10:00pm, Saturday 8:00am - 5:00pm, Sunday 8:00am - 1:00pm). Full Turnout Gear Required. Instructor: Frank Sasser, Assistant Chief, Goldsboro Fire Department, 39 year veteran with the fire service. Section 23 Fire Life & Safety Preparedness (NC Certification) This course is designed to assist the candidate if all junctions of a fire and life safety program including: inspections, prevention, education, and cause determination. 12 hours (Saturday 8:00am - 5:00pm, Sunday 9:00am - 1:00pm). Instructor: Jennifer Smith, Battalion Chief New Hanover County Fire/Rescue Service, 17 years of fire service, Program Manager for Professional Development, Accreditation, and Community Risk Reduction. Section 24 Building Construction (NC Certification) This course will enable the firefighter to identify the different types of construction and their reaction during a fire situation and the hazards associated with each. 16 hours (Friday 7:00pm - 10:00pm, Saturday 8:00am - 5:00pm, Sunday 8:00am - 1:00pm). Instructor: Jourdon Pope, Captain, Wilson Fire Department Section 25 Health & Wellness (NC Certification) This class will educate the first responder on the importance of maintaining high levels of fitness and wellness in order to perform their assigned duties efficiently and safely. 8 hours (Friday 8:00am - 5:00pm). Instructor: John Greene, Captain Safety, Health, & Wellness, Wilmington Fire Department Section 26 Mayday (NC Certification) Using simulated situations, this course focuses on identifying parameters that constitute a mayday call. A student will also receive NFA Mayday certification. 8 hours (Friday 8:00am - 5:00pm). Full Turnout Gear and SCBA Required. Driver Operator: Mobile Water Supply (NC Certification) This course is designed to educate fire apparatus drivers who are responsible for operating apparatus designed primarily for picking up, transporting and delivering water to fire emergency scenes. It presents general principles of operating apparatus equipped with various water dumping systems, with application of those principles. It includes an overview of safe maneuvering, accident prevention, fill site and dump site operations, as well as relay operation procedures. 16 hours (Friday 7:00pm - 10:00pm, Saturday 8:00am - 5:00pm, Sunday 8:00am - 1:00pm). Section 31 Driver Operator: Hydraulics (NC Certification) This course will detail vacuum pressure, normal operating pressure, residual, head and static pressure as it relates to the operation of a fire pumper during an emergency operation. It will describe factors related to friction loss and detail measures to reduce friction loss. It will also review nozzle reaction force and show methods to calculate this force. Finally, a review of mathematical calculations utilized in fire service hydraulics will be reviewed and discussed. 15 hours (Friday 7:00pm - 10:00pm, Saturday 8:00am - 5:00pm, Sunday 9:00am - 1:00pm). Section 32 Driver Operator: Aerials: Introduction (NC Certification) This course is designed to introduce personnel to various types of aerial fire apparatus and their applications to emergency operations. It will include job and individual performance issues; how to identify various types of aerial apparatus, features of the design and application of aerials and elevating platforms. It will also review unsafe acts as it relates to weather and terrain in placement and use of aerials. It will also review unsafe acts as it relates to driver operator errors. 15 hours (Friday 7:00pm - 10:00pm, Saturday 8:00am - 5:00pm, Sunday 9:00am - 1:00pm). Full Turnout Gear Required. There will be a heavy emphasis on benefits from the State Firemen s Association, the Firemen s and Rescue Squad Workers Pension Fund, the PSOB, Workers Compensation and the State of North Carolina. Packets outlining the procedure to follow in case of a line-of-duty death will be provided as well. The class is designed to benefit all firefighters and is packed with useful information. Section 36 Chief 101 Update (NC Certification) This is the current Chief 101 update course approved by the NC Fire and Rescue Commission to meet NC Administrative Code requirements for those who have previously taken the Chief 101 course. Course content, which is revised at least every five years, must align with the currently approved update course managed by the NC Department of Insurance Office of State Fire Marshal (OSFM), and instructors must be specifically approved.
