This course provides for the defining of the policies and procedures concerning the ordering and transmitting of multiple alarms and the action to be taken upon receipt of these signals. Building construction type is a very important factor that must be identified during pre-incident surveys or during scene size-up. Building construction materials will be covered in all aspects from the positives and negatives of how they are used. The student must pass the written test to receive certification credit. The student must pass the written test to receive certification credit. Course topics include a review of basic and advanced safety regulations, the firefighter s responsibility to comply with those regulations, a review of the elements of a departmental safety program, and the hazards related to fire protection. In addition, the correct application of fire streams will be included. This course will enable the firefighter candidate to demonstrate the use of hoses and nozzles, adaptors and appliances, and the information needed to conduct an annual service test of fire hose. The student must pass the practical and written tests to receive certification credit. Student must bring full turn-out gear. This course is designed to assist the candidate in all functions of a fire and life safety program including: inspections, prevention, education, and cause determination. Course content includes lecture and practice activities needed to perform the following tasks safely and effectively: (1) implement standard operating procedures in the current edition of the DOT Emergency Response Guidebook; (2) analyze a hazardous materials/wmd incident; (3) plan an initial response to a hazardous materials/wmd incident; (4) implement the planned response for a hazardous materials/wmd incident; (5) evaluate the progress of the actions taken at a hazardous materials/wmd incident. This class will meet all objectives required for NC Certification. The student must pass the practical and written tests to receive certification credit. This course focuses on firefighter survival techniques and on identifying factors that place firefighters in dangerous situations. Student must bring full turn-out gear, SCBA, and spare bottle. Basic principles of pressure and terminology connected with water movement will be covered. The student must pass the practical and written tests to receive credit. Class begins Friday, February 9 at 6 p.m. TECHNICAL RESCUE COURSES TR Confined Space - #50356 February 5, 6, 7, 8, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, 9, 10, 11 Saturday, 8 a.m.-7 p.m.; Sunday, 8 a.m.-12 p.m. 64 hours This course will present the Technical Rescuer with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to satisfy the requirements of Chapter 7 (Confined Space) of NFPA 1006: Standard for Technical Rescue Professional Qualifications. This block includes all four required parts of the Technical Rescuer (TR) Confined Space certification course series as outlined by the NC Fire and Rescue Commission: FIP-5901 TR Confined Space Rescue Operations, FIP-5902 TR Confined Space Rescue Rigging, FIP-5903 TR Confined Space Hazard Control, and FIP-5904 TR Confined Space Victim Management. This transfers as one all or nothing block to the Office of State Fire Marshal (OSFM). Students must successfully complete all parts to receive certification credit for this block course. Student must bring helmets, harnesses, gloves, eye protection, and safety toed boots. A portion of this class will be held off campus. Class begins Monday, February 5 beginning at 8 a.m. Instructor: Eric Stroud, High Point Fire Department TR PPE - #50358 February 10 (One-day Class) Saturday, 8 a.m.-6 p.m. 9 hours This course will present the Technical Rescuer (TR) the need for and use of PPE to enable the rescuer to perform his/her duties in a safe and responsible manner. Physical characteristics of rescuers, stress, endurance, and the limitations of equipment will be discussed. Reference: NFPA 1006 Chapters Five and Six. The student must pass a written test to receive credit. Class will be held Saturday, February 10 beginning at 8 a.m. Instructor: Monte Cockerham, Winston-Salem Fire Department TR Rescue Equipment - #50360 February 11 (One-day Class) Sunday, 8 a.m.-3 p.m. 6 hours This course will introduce the Technical Rescuer to the operation and function of various tools and equipment commonly used in rescue operations. This course will also present procedures for care, inspection, and maintenance of personal protective equipment, tactical equipment, and apparatus. The value of periodic inspection and maintenance to reduce the chances of unexpected equipment failure, performance failure, disabling injuries, and fatalities will be discussed. The student must pass the practical and written tests to receive certification credit. Class will be held Sunday, February 11 beginning at 8 a.m. Instructor: Monte Cockerham, Winston-Salem Fire Department TR VR Large Vehicle Rescue - #50361 February 9 (One-day Class) Friday, 1 p.m.-7 p.m. 6 hours This course will present the Technical Rescuer (TR) to the techniques required to mitigate large vehicle rescue incidents. The course will expose responders to scene hazards and scene stabilization techniques. The student must pass the practical and written tests to receive certification credit. Student must bring full turn-out gear or rescue turn-out gear and eye protection. 6 COURSE LISTINGS TR VR Rescue Ops/Vehicle Rescue - #50362 February 6 (One-day Class) Tuesday, 8 a.m. - 6 p.m. 9 hours This course will present the Technical Rescuer (TR) to the hazards of vehicle rescue operations, ICS, access, disentanglement, extrication, and the post rescue phases of vehicle rescue. The student must pass the practical and written tests to receive certification credit. Student must bring full turn-out gear or rescue turn-out gear and eye protection. Class will be held Tuesday, February 6 beginning at 8 a.m. Instructor: Gregg Westbrook, Greensboro Fire Department TR VR Stabilization & Extrication - #50365 February 8, 9 Thursday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.; Friday 8 a.m. 12 p.m. 12 hours This course will present the Technical Rescuer the proper steps to stabilize a vehicle on four wheels, a side-resting vehicle and a roof-resting vehicle. The Technical Rescuer will also be introduced to procedures for the following: opening a jammed door using a hinge attack and a latch attack, how to create a third door, total door removal, sidewall removal, working with a collapsed roof, creating the roof flap, C-B-A roof pillar cut, procedures for total roof removal, trunk tunneling, through the floor access, how to displace a steering column, dash roll, removal and/or relocation of pedals, and how to remove and/or relocate seats. The student must pass the practical and written tests to receive certification credit. Student must bring full turn-out gear or rescue turn-out gear and eye protection. Class begins Thursday, February 8 at 8 a.m. Instructor: Gregg Westbrook, Greensboro Fire Department TR VR Vehicle Anatomy/New Tech - #50366 February 7 (One-day Class) Wednesday, 8 a.m.-6 p.m. 9 hours This course will present the Technical Rescuer (TR) with information on vehicle anatomy and will introduce new technologies in vehicle devices which present hazards for rescue personnel. Topics included in this course are vehicle construction, crumple zones, bumper systems, air bags, side-impact protection systems, new vehicle innovations, propulsion systems, passive safety systems, and active safety systems. Suggestions on how to cope with innovative vehicles to safely mitigate a modern vehicle rescue will also be discussed. The student must pass the written test to receive certification credit. Class will be held Wednesday, February 7 beginning at 8 a.m. Instructor: Gregg Westbrook, Greensboro Fire Department TR VR Victim Management - #50367 February 10, 11 Saturday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.; Sunday, 8 a.m.-12 p.m. 12 hours This course will present the Technical Rescuer (TR) with proper methods for the movement of patients from a hazardous situation while focusing on the safety and well-being of the patients and rescuers. Stabilizing the situation, gaining access, packaging, and removal patients from vehicle rescue incidents will be emphasized in this course. The student must pass the practical and written tests to receive certification credit. Student must bring full turn-out gear or rescue turn-out gear and eye protection. Class begins Saturday, February 10 beginning at 8 a.m. Instructor: Gregg Westbrook, Greensboro Fire Department DRIVER OPERATOR COURSES Driver Operator: Basic Aerial Operations - #50320 February 10, 11 Saturday & Sunday, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. 15 hours This course is designed to introduce personnel to various types of aerial fire apparatus and their applications to emergency operations. It will include job and individual performance issues, how to identify various types of aerial apparatus, features of the design, and application of aerials and elevating platforms. It will also review unsafe acts as it relates to weather and terrain in placement and use of aerials. It will also review unsafe acts as it relates to driver operator errors. The student must pass the practical and written tests to receive certification credit. Student must bring helmet, gloves, and protective shoes. Class begins Saturday, February 10 at 8 a.m. Instructor: Tyler Forrest, Salisbury Fire Department EVD: Emergency Vehicle Driver - #50321 February 9, 10, 11 Friday, 6-10 p.m.; Saturday & Sunday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. 20 hours This course will deal with the safe operation of emergency vehicles, driving skills, legal implications of emergency driving and departmental standard operating procedures. This course is a stand-alone certification and is also a prerequisite to Driver Operator certification by the NC Fire and Rescue Commission. The student must pass the practical and written tests to receive certification credit. STUDENT MUST BE 18 YEARS OF AGE AND HAVE A VALID NC DRIVER LICENSE TO ENROLL IN THIS CLASS. Class begins Friday, February 9 at 6 p.m. Instructor: Jeff Jenkins, Davidson County Fire Marshal s Office Driver Operator Pumps: Pump Hydraulics - #50353 February 10, 11 Saturday & Sunday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. 16 hours This course will detail vacuum pressure, normal operating pressure, residual, head, and static pressure as it relates to the operation of a fire pumper during an emergency operation. Finally, a review of mathematical calculations utilized in fire service hydraulics will be reviewed and discussed. Class begins Saturday, February 10 at 8 a.m. Instructor: Ronnie Metcalf, Lexington Fire Department Driver Operator Pumps: Mobile Water Supply - #50348 February 10, 11 Saturday & Sunday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. 16 hours This course is designed to educate fire apparatus drivers who are responsible for operating apparatus designed primarily for picking up, transporting, and delivering water to fire emergency scenes. This Mobile Water Supply (Chapter 10) course presents general principles of operating apparatus equipped with various water dumping systems, with application of those principles. This course includes an overview of safe maneuvering, accident prevention, fill site, and dump site operations, as well as relay operation procedures. The student must pass the practical and written tests to receive certification credit. DMICO (Decision Making for Initial Company Operations)/NFA - #50374 February 8, 9, 10 Thursday, Friday, 6-10 p.m.; Saturday, 8 a.m.-noon 12 hours This course is designed to develop the decision making skills needed by Company Officers (COs) to accomplish assigned tactics at structure fires. As a Company Officer (CO) with the real possibility of being the first to arrive at an incident, the CO s initial decisions will have an impact throughout the entire incident. Class begins Thursday, February 8 at 6 p.m. Instructor: Stephen Lovette, High Point Fire Department Leadership I/NFA - #50343 February 5, 6, 7 Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, 6-10 p.m. 12 hours This course provides the company officer with basic skills and tools needed to perform effectively as a leader in the fire service. This leadership course addresses techniques and approaches to problem solving, identifying, and assessing the needs of the company officer, running meetings effectively in the fire service environment, and decision making for the company officer. Class begins Monday, February 5 at 6 p.m. Instructor: Bob Halpin, High Point Fire Department (Retired) Leadership II/NFA - #50345 February 8, 9, 10 Thursday, Friday, 6-10 p.m.; Saturday, 8 a.m. - Noon 12 hours This course will introduce personnel to the various skills and tools needed to perform effectively as an officer in the fire service environment. Topics will include: resourcefulness, ethics, use and abuse of power at the officer level, and management of the multiple roles of a company officer. The course is designed for fire or rescue personnel due for promotion, training officers, unit commanders, line fire officers, or program supervisors seeking a promotion. STICO is designed to develop the management skills needed by company officers to accomplish assigned tactics at structure fires. Students may enroll for multiple classes as long as the class schedules do not conflict or overlap. All classes must be listed on the registration form (located in the brochure). Only one $30 per person Emergency Services College fee is required for the week, regardless of the number of classes you take. Registration and Check In The purpose of the school is to make quality training available to as many dedicated emergency responders as possible. Every effort has been made to accommodate maximum participation in the course of registration. Students will not be registered in a course until the College receives a release that includes the signature of the appropriate Chief/Training Officer located on the second page of the registration form. Affirmation Statement does not apply for medical courses. Should your first choice be filled, you will be assigned to your second or third choice. You will be notified only if you do not get your first choice of classes. Students who do not pre-register for Emergency Services College will need to go to the 2nd floor of the J. Bryan Brooks Student Center to register for the class before it starts.
