The Fire School is an interactive training program offering 2 days of continuing education for the recruit, probationary, and experienced emergency responder. The tools and skills needed to succeed on the fire ground and in the fire station will be presented to students. Courses were chosen to test the practical and mental skills required to successfully mitigate incidents any emergency responder may face. Classes will be presented at various locations. Early registration is encouraged for you to receive placement in the class of your choice. Complete the fire school application, indicating your first and second class choices. All classes require a $25 registration fee and include lunch on Saturday. Course offerings for the 2010 Fire School include: Modular Emergency Response Radiation Transportation Training (MERRTT) North Augusta Department of Public Safety Station #2 501 West Five Notch Road The US Department of Energy (US DOE) offers the Modular Emergency Response Radiological Transportation Training (MERRTT) program, with 2010 updates. MERRTT provides fundamental knowledge for responding to transportation incidents involving radiological material and builds on training in existing hazardous materials curricula. The material is designed to meet the training needs of persons serving in the fire service, law enforcement, emergency medical service, emergency management, public works, or a hazardous materials team. As an added feature for the Aiken County Fire School, this program will provide case studies about several radiation emergencies which have occurred in Aiken County, SC. The proper method for requesting assistance from local, state, and federal resources will be provided. A representative from the US DOE Radiation Assistance Program (RAP) team will provide an informative presentation on the federal capabilities and resources which can be brought to bear during radiation emergencies. In addition, the US DOE Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) site (Carlsbad, NM) will provide an 18 wheeled, nuclear waste transport truck with radioactive materials shipping casks for student view and discussion.
