2 GENERAL INFORMATION Enrollment Every effort will be made to accommodate maximum participation in the course of your choice. Students should complete and return registration forms indicating 1st, 2nd, and 3rd choices of classes with the proper fees (No credit cards). NO REGISTRATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED OR RESERVED OVER THE PHONE OR BY FAX!!! Confirmation cards will only be mailed for 2 nd and 3 rd choices. CLASS CHANGES WILL BE TREATED AS WALK-INS AT THE COLLEGE. Classes with insufficient registration may be cancelled prior to the College. Walk-in registrations will be accepted on site for classes with openings. Cash or checks only accepted for walk-in registration fees. NO REFUNDS AFTER September 19, 2014!! **Classes beginning Wednesday attendance is mandatory you will not be allowed in class on Thursday if you do not attend Wednesday** **Classes beginning Friday - attendance is mandatory - you will not be allowed in class on Saturday if you do not attend Friday ** Students are requested to go directly to the appropriate classrooms Friday evening and/or Saturday morning. Class titles, room numbers, and directions will be posted at the main college entrance. Please look for your class title and room number upon arrival. FIREFIGHTERS UNDER AGE 18, BUT AT LEAST 16 YEARS OF AGE, (EXCEPT THOSE FROM BRUNSWICK, NEW HANOVER, PENDER AND ONSLOW COUNTIES), MUST SEND A LETTER OF RELEASE FROM THEIR SCHOOL WITH THE REGISTRATION FORM TO BE REGISTERED FOR THIS TRAINING. 3 Location Walk-in registration will be held on Friday (6:00-7:00pm) and Saturday (7:00-8:00am) at the Cape Fear Community College North Campus located on Blue Clay Road in Castle Hayne, North Carolina. All classes will begin at the North Campus. Some classes will continue off campus on Saturday and Sunday. Students are responsible for their own transportation. Remember to check Mapquest.com for directions from your area. Directions from I - 40 Take Exit 414 toward Castle Hayne. Go left at Holly Shelter Road for.8 miles to the intersection of Castle Hayne Road/US 117/NC133. Turn left onto US 117 South/NC 133 South for 2.4 miles until intersection with Blue Clay Road. Turn left onto Blue Clay Road. North Campus will be on your right. Directions from Market Street At overpass (Hwy 132/College Rd.) merge right onto NC-132 North and go 2.6 miles. Take Exit 420B onto US 117 /NC 132 North. Go 3.2 miles to the intersection of Blue Clay Road, turn right. North Campus will be on your right. Certificates Students who successfully complete the class in which they are enrolled will be awarded a certificate from Cape Fear Community College. 7 COURSE DESCRIPTIONS ** Sections 1 7 Register at to obtain a SID number for NFA classes ** *Section 1 Arson Detection for First Responders (NFA Course) The first responder is often in the best position to make critical observations regarding a fire. Observations of the first responder during the various stages of an incident are extremely critical. This course will cover first responder observations, fire behavior, building construction, origin and cause, vehicle fires, scene security, preservation of evidence, legal considerations and reporting of findings. This class will begin at 7:00pm on Friday. Friday attendance is mandatory! *Section 2 Incident Safety Officer (NFA Course) The participant will be able to identify and analyze safety concerns as they relate to all-hazard scene evaluations, and communicate recommended solutions to the command authority. This course examines the safety officer's role at emergency response situations. A specific focus on operations within an incident command system as a safety officer is a main theme. *Section 3 Leadership I (NFA Course) This course is designed to introduce basic leadership skills and techniques to improve company effectiveness and performance. Topics covered in the course include: techniques and approaches to problem solving, assessing the needs of subordinates, running meetings effectively in the fire service environment and decision-making strategies. *Section 4 Leadership II (NFA Course) This course is designed to introduce basic leadership skills and techniques to enhance the company officer's efficiency. The course focuses on use and abuse of power at the company officer level, creativity in the fire service environment and managing the multiple roles of the company officer. *Section 5 Leadership III (NFA Course) This course is designed to introduce basic leadership skills and techniques to improve supervisory effectiveness. Topics addressed in this course include when and how to delegate to subordinates, when and how to discipline subordinates and coaching/motivating techniques for management-level personnel. *Section 6 STICO (Strategy & Tactics for Initial Company Operations) (NFA Course) This course is designed to introduce basic leadership skills and techniques in a command management situation. The student will learn the necessary components of operational systems. Topics addressed in this course include transfer of command, receiving and evaluating reports, and planning new strategies. This class is scheduled for 16 hours and will begin at 7:00pm on Friday evening. Friday attendance is mandatory! (Friday 7:00pm - 10:00pm, Saturday 8:00am - 5:00pm, Sunday 8:00am - 1:00pm). *Section 7 DMICO (Decision Making for Initial Company Operations) (NFA Course) This course is designed to develop the decision making skills essential to Company Officers. The Company Officer must make informed decisions that affect the outcome of any emergency incident. A Company Officer should fully understand the ICS organization and the position assigned to function effectively and help the system work. This class is scheduled for 16 hours and will begin at 7:00pm on Friday evening. Friday attendance is mandatory! (Friday 7:00pm - 10:00pm, Saturday 8:00am - 5:00pm, Sunday 8:00am - 1:00pm Section 8 Haz Mat Level One Responder (NC Certification) This course will meet the objectives related to Haz Mat Level One Responder for NC Certification. Full Turnout Gear and SCBA Required. This class is scheduled for 36 hours and will begin at 8:00am on Wednesday morning. Attendance is mandatory for all days! (Wednesday, Thursday, Friday & Saturday 8:00am - 5:00pm, Sunday 9:00am - 1:00pm). Section 9 Building Construction I & II (NC Certification) This course will meet the objectives related to Building Construction for NC Certification. This class will begin at 7:00pm on Friday. Full Turnout Gear Required. Section 20 Personal Protective Equipment I & II (NC Certification) This class will meet the objectives related to Personal Protective Equipment for NC Certification. This class will begin at 7:00pm on Friday. Friday evening attendance is mandatory! Full Turnout Gear and SCBA Required. Section 21 Emergency Medical Care I & II (NC Certification) This class will meet the objectives related to Emergency Medical Care for NC Certification. This class will begin at 7:00pm on Friday. Helmet and Gloves Required. Section 27 Fire Control I & II (NC Certification) The practical portions of this N.C. Certification class will be accomplished using the Safety Training Center facilities. All students must have met NFPA Live Burn Standards 1403 as required by the N. C. Fire Commission. This class is scheduled for 24 hours and will begin at 9:00am on Friday morning. Friday attendance is mandatory! (Friday 9:00am - 10:00pm, Saturday 8:00am - 5:00pm, Sunday 8:00am - 1:00pm). Full Turnout Gear and SCBA Required. Requires Chief s signature on registration verifying all requirements have been met. Section 28 Rescue I & II (NC Certification) This class will meet the objectives related to Rescue for NC Certification. This class is scheduled for 24 hours and will begin at 9:00am on Friday morning. Friday attendance is mandatory! (Friday 9:00am - 10:00pm, Saturday 8:00am - 5:00pm, Sunday 8:00am - 1:00pm). Full Turnout Gear and SCBA Required. Section 29 Driver Operator: Emergency Vehicle Driver (NC Certification) This course will meet the objectives of the Emergency Vehicle Driver Certification. Saturday afternoon and Sunday class will meet outside for hands-on training, rain or shine. Please dress appropriately. This class is scheduled for 16 hours and will begin at 7:00pm on Friday evening. Friday attendance is mandatory! (Friday 7:00pm - 10:00pm, Saturday 8:00am - 5:00pm, Sunday 8:00am - 1:00pm). Section 35 TR General: Ropes (NC Certification) This class will present the technical rescuer safe and effective methods of rescue in elevated and below grade environments using ropes, knots, and rope related equipment. Mechanical advantage, anchors, anchoring techniques, and stress loads will be covered. Practicals will be held outside; please dress appropriately. This class is scheduled for 21 hours and will begin on Friday at 1:00pm. Friday attendance is mandatory! (Friday 1:00pm - 10:00pm, Saturday 8:00am - 5:00pm, Sunday 8:00am - 1:00pm). Full Turnout Gear Required. Section 36 TR General: Rescue Rigging (NC Certification) This class will meet the objectives related to TR Rescue Rigging for NC Certification. Practicals will be held outside; please dress appropriately. This class will begin at 7:00pm on Friday. Friday attendance is mandatory! Full Turnout Gear Required or attire suitable for rescue work including a helmet and gloves. Section 37 TR Ropes: Anchors (NC Certification) This course will present the Technical Rescuer with correct techniques for setup, operation, and function of various multiple-point anchor and portable anchor/lifting platform systems used during rope rescue incidents. Practicals will be held outside; please dress appropriately. This class will begin at 7:00pm on Friday. Friday attendance is mandatory! Full Turnout Gear Required. Section 38 TR General: Victim Management (NC Certification) This class will meet the objectives related to TR General: Victim Management for NC Certification. Section 39 Fire Officer II (NC Certification) This course will present the Fire Officer Candidate with the knowledge, skills, and ability to satisfy the requirements of the Chapter Five of the NFPA 1021: Standard for Fire Officer Professional Qualifications. This course is designed to meet the needs of the mid-level officer/supervisor. Pre-requisites: Fire Officer I. This class is scheduled for 21 hours and will begin at 1:00pm on Friday afternoon. Friday attendance is mandatory! (Friday 1:00pm - 10:00pm, Saturday 8:00am - 5:00pm, Sunday 8:00am - 1:00pm). Section 40 Chief 101 (NC Certification) This class will offer insight into paperwork and other issues facing today s fire departments. There will be a heavy emphasis on benefits from the State Firemen s Association, the Firemen s and Rescue Squad Workers Pension Fund, the PSOB, Workers Compensation and the State of North Carolina. Packets outlining the procedure to follow in case of a line-of-duty death will be provided as well. The class is designed to benefit all firefighters and is packed with useful information. Chiefs, company officers, and firefighters are encouraged to attend. Section 41 Basic Firefighting I This course is designed for the firefighter with little or no experience. Basics to be covered include: ladders, SCBA, fire streams, hose practices, etc. Practical applications will be used extensively. This class will begin at 7:00pm on Friday. Friday evening attendance is mandatory! Full Turnout Gear and SCBA Required. Requires Chief s signature on registration. Section 42 NC Rating Response System The new Fire Suppression Rating Schedule (FSRS) contains the criteria North Carolina Department of Insurance uses in reviewing the fire suppression capabilities of individual communities. The schedule measures the major elements of a community s fire suppression system and develops a numerical grade called a Public Protection Classification. The new schedule continues to evaluate the three major categories of fire suppression: fire department, emergency communications, and water supply. This course also includes a new Community Risk Reduction section that recognizes community efforts to reduce losses through fire prevention, public fire safety education, and fire investigation. Section 43 Explosives, Bombs & Booby Traps Emergency responders (including EMS, Law, Fire and Rescue workers) may encounter various types of explosive devises and environments in today s society. This course will present both classroom instruction and practical exercises that will include bomb searches, spotting booby traps as well as other demonstrations. Wear appropriate clothing for outside demonstrations and practicals. Section 44 LP Gas - Great Balls of Fire This 1-day, 12-hour course is designed to educate the firefighter on various characteristics of gases and its behavior. Study will include definitions, flashpoints, product dangers, emergency shut-off values and safety devices, as well as other critical information necessary for the firefighter. The class includes live exterior fire training. All students must have met NFPA Live Burn Standards 1403 as required by the NC Fire Commission. This class will begin Saturday at 8:00am and conclude at 10:00pm. Full Turnout Gear and SCBA Required. Requires Chief s signature on registration verifying all requirements have been met. Section 45 Advanced Topics of Fire Investigators This course focuses on topics above and beyond the NFA Arson Detection for Fire Responders. Topics will include, but not be limited to, Legal Updates, Origin and Cause Determination, Fire Fatalities and the use of K-9s in Fire Investigations. The course is designed for personnel who are or hope to become fire investigators within their

11 jurisdictions. Pre-requisites: NFA Arson/Fire Detection, Arson/Fire Detection for First Responders or Equivalent. Requires Chief s signature on registration. Section 46 First Due Engine Company In this course students will look at a variety of aspects that an officer or first due company may encounter upon arriving at a fire scene. Class discussion involves strategies and incident scenarios from the critical first minutes on a scene to firefighter fatalities. This class is open to all firefighters, but is especially important to the command officer. Section 47 Occult & Ritual Identification Part I This class is designed to educate students in the area of the occult. It will attempt to dispel myth and misunderstanding often created by the media including Hollywood. Instead, the focus will be more on fact and the real world perspective. Objectives will include understanding the philosophy of the Hispanic Mexican folk magic, Satanism and Witchcraft. Tools of the Trade will be defined and discussed, such as the signs, symbols, candle magic and occult symbolism in graffiti and tattoos. Alters, spiritual shrines and animal sacrifice will be studied because of the frequent encounter of such items with first responders. With the growing concern of gangs and hate groups, the instructor will spend time discussing the ploy of the occult related gangs to give power to their members because of their magical religious beliefs. The information shared at this seminar is unique and valuable and encompasses over 25 years of law enforcement training. No recording devices or cameras are allowed in the classroom. (This is not a class in religion). Section 48 NIMS ICS-300 In this course the student will cover the organizational structure and how it is staffed. ICS positions and their responsibilities will be discussed and the information flow in the organization. Organizational development and staffing are of primary concerns. Implementing and controlling resources to the incident will also be covered. Pre-requisites: NIMS ICS-100 & ICS This class is scheduled for 18 hours and will begin at 5:00pm on Friday evening. Friday evening attendance is mandatory! (Friday 5:00pm-10:00pm, Saturday 8:00am-5:00pm, Sunday 8:00am-1:00pm).
