In this course we offer you 16 of the first 20 hours that a firefighter must have before they can respond to a scene. Full turnout gear and SCBA are required. 4 CLASS 2: JUNIOR FIREFIGHTING CLASS (EXPLORER) This course is exclusively for Explorers and Junior Firefighters. It will cover 16 of the 20 recommended hours for a new firefighter in Kentucky. This class is recommended for 14 year olds and newcomers with little or no training experience. Here is a chance for you to obtain some of the categories that are sometimes hard to get, but you must have to become a certified firefighter. Take the entire course or choose only to take the hours that you need.

This course will emphasize the removal of trapped or unconscious firefighters from a burning building and self rescue techniques when the primary escape route is blocked. This is a required course for all new firefighters in Kentucky. Full turn out gear and SCBA are required. 6 CLASS 5: FIREFIGHTER RESCUE (FC20000) This is an 8 hour course and will be offered on Sunday only. This course is designed to teach you how to rescue fellow firefighters from a burning structure. Special techniques are used for the rescue portion. This is a required course for all new firefighters in Kentucky. The completion of FF survival is a prerequisite for this course. Full turnout gear and SCBA are required. Prerequisites: Permission Form if Exp/Jr. FF Open to Ages 15+ Instructors: State Fire Rescue Training Instructors CLASS 6: INTRODUCTION TO LARGE ANIMAL RESCUE (Q0006) In this lecture-hand on based, introduction course, topics such as: safety concerns for rescuer, public and animals will be discussed. Equine medical emergencies, types of animal entrapment, and rescue techniques transportation/highway emergencies with animal involvement will also be addressed. This is an 8 hour class on Saturday only. Prerequisites: Permission Form if Exp/Jr. FF Open to Ages 15+ Instructors: State Fire Rescue Training Instructors CLASS 7: KENTUCKY FIRE COMMISSION 2012 AND BEYOND (AA0000) The Health and Wellness Initiatives, including CPAT and Peer Fitness, Communications trailers, History / Recruitment trailer, Inflatable Safety House, NFIRS incident reporting system and the new Training
7 Records System are just some of the items to be reviewed. The 2012 Kentucky General Assembly will be covered. Seldom in the history of Kentucky s fire service have so many changes been occurring at the same time as we have had during the past few years, and we are sure to see even more projects in the future. This class will provide you the latest information on a host of Fire Commission programs and policies and their effect on your department, including who is handling the various programs, who to call on a variety of issues, and plans for the future. THIS IS A ONE DAY CLASS AND WILL BE OFFERED ON SATURDAY & SUNDAY. Prerequisites: Permission Form if Exp/Jr. FF Open to Ages 14+ Instructor: KY Fire Commission Staff Members CLASS 8: ROPE RESCUE-RAPPELLING (I0001) This 2 day class will be held on both Saturday and Sunday. In this course we offer you 16 hours of rope rescue. The student will learn rope construction, rope rescue hardware, knots used in rappelling along with some rope rescue commands. The instructors will accept students from every level. So it doesn t matter if you are a beginner or an advanced student. Come to learn and to also have some fun! 8 CLASS 9: FIRST RESPONDER AND EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN CONTINUING EDUCATION This 2 day course will be held on both Saturday and Sunday. These are the 16 hours required to recertify under both the State and National Registry. You may take all 16 hours or just the hours you need. Special attention will be paid to the changes made by the new EMS Education Regulations. This is a Saturday only class. 9 CLASS: 11 FOAM FIRE STREAMS (L0000) This class will provide a wide range of knowledge and skills for the subject of Foam Fire Streams. This class will include classroom information on Class A, Class B and Compressed Air Foam Fire Streams. This class will include classroom presentations followed by outside demonstrations and evolutions. Students need to bring full protective clothing (bunker gear), SCBA s are not needed. This is an 8 hour class offered both days. Prerequisites: Permission Form if Exp/Jr. FF Open to Ages 16+ Instructor: State Fire Rescue Training Instructors CLASS 12: FARM RELATED EMERGENCIES (Q0006) This is a 2 day course offered on Saturday and Sunday. This course is designed to educate the rescuer on the proper techniques of real life rural and urban emergencies. Classroom instruction will cover scenarios such as: Safely removing livestock from an emergency scene, heavy equipment rescues, techniques for setting up a landing zone, and many more. Students will become familiar with different types of farming equipment. Students will be trained with hands-on scenarios involving various types of rural and urban farming equipment. Helmets, eye protection, extrication jumpsuits/turnout gear, gloves, and boots required. Prerequisites: None Open to Ages 18+ Instructor: Dale Dobson, Kentucky Department of Agriculture
10 CLASS 13: Fires In Manufactured Homes (II0000) This 4 hour Course was designed to educate Kentucky's Fire Service on the topic of Manufactured Housing Fires. This Course primarily focuses on Single wide manufactured or what most people term a "mobile home" or trailer. This class will be offered on Saturday Afternoon and Sunday Morning. Prerequisites: Permission Form if Exp/Jr. FF Open to Ages 16+ Instructor: State Fire Rescue Training Instructors CLASS 14: FIRE INSTRUCTOR UPDATE (BB0000) This course meets the requirements set forth by the Kentucky Fire Commission that all instructors must have 8 hours of method of instruction update or take a Train-the-Trainer every 3 years. Prerequisites: Certified Level 1, 2 or 3 Kentucky Fire Instructor Open to Ages 18+ Instructor: State Fire Rescue Training Instructors CLASS 15: HIGHWAY CRASH SCENE MANAGEMENT AND EMERGENCY TRAFFIC CONTROL (B0000) Developed by the Kentucky Transportation Center at the University of Kentucky for Kentucky s first responders. The purpose of this course is to enhance public safety and responder safety. The course will
11 concentrate on effective management of the incident and effective traffic control during the incident. This 4 hour course will be offered on Sunday only. Prerequisites: Permission Form if Exp/Jr. FF Open to ages 14+ Instructor: Arch Sebastian, KYDOH District 10 Incident Management Philip Noble, KYDOH District 10 Safety Officer CLASS 16: METH LAB AWARENESS (T0000) This class is 4 hours and will be held on Saturday Morning and Sunday mornings. This is a unique 4 hour Hazardous materials training dealing with Meth labs. This class will enable the student to identify a Meth lab and recognize the chemicals used in its production. It will also inform the student of the dangers they may face when exposed to a lab. Topics for discussion will include: The history of Meth Labs, the dangers that a firefighter faces, basic cooking methods and who and when to call for help. Prerequisites: Permission Form if Exp/Jr. FF Open to Ages 14+ Instructor: Operation Unite Class 17: ARSON 1 (Y0000) This is a 16 hour two day course that will be held on both Saturday and Sunday. This course is the National Fire Academy s Arson Detection for the First Responder. This classroom delivery will cover many phases of initial fire scene investigation with emphasis on the firefighter s responsibilities in arson detection. You must have signed permission, from your chief, prior to attending fire

For further information contact Rusty Todd at Open to Ages 18+ Instructor: State Fire Rescue Training Instructors Class 18: MINING SITE EMERGENCIES (X0000) This is a one day class offered on both Saturday and Sunday designed to provide firefighters, law enforcement and emergency medical personnel with information and precautions that should be taken before or while responding to an emergency at surface mines, surface areas of underground mines, and surface mining facilities. Contents include: Emergency response planning Large haul truck fires Structures in and around surface facilities Use of mine equipment for rescue & fire fighting Traffic control on mine roadways First responder vehicle maintenance (Brakes & Steering) Hazards addressed: Explosive storage Surge piles Draw-off tunnels Fuel Storage (stationary and mobile) Belt conveyors Electricity Preparation plants and mills Off road haul trucks and end loaders High walls and high wall mining machines Chemical and gases common to mines and facilities

Tyler and Glen Poe, United States Department of Labor National Mine Health and Safety Academy CLASS 19: WHERE IS A CHAPLAIN WHEN YOU NEED ONE? (JJ0000) This is a 2 day course, in modern fire service numerous factors have made it desirable; many consider it a necessity, to establish a formal position of Fire Chaplain. Fire Chaplains assist their departments in keeping their personnel physically and mentally prepared to respond in America s most dangerous and stressful work. The chaplain is trained in rehabilitation, accountability, incident command, EAP, PSOB, NFPA 1500, critical Incident management, funerals, drug and alcohol abuse and networking with outside agencies such as Red Cross, criminal activity and terrorism. The trained chaplain is often considered the crisis coordinator. This class will benefit officers from both departments which are considering a chaplains position or those that already have one appointed. Personnel who are serving as a chaplain or those considering this line of service are encouraged to attend. Open to Ages 14+ Instructors: Lee Tomley, Kentucky Federation of Fire Chaplains CLASS 20: BASIC SEARCH AND RESCUE (Q0000) Basic Search and Rescue is a 20 hour class starting on Friday from 4PM to 10PM and continuing Saturday from 9AM to 9PM and finishing on Sunday from 8AM till finish. This course is taught in three modules; search, rescue, and survival. It is designed for new personnel as well as for the experienced SAR personnel. A night
14 search will be conducted with emphasis on the skills and techniques learned during the course. STUDENT CRITERIA: This course is open to rescue, fire, emergency medical, emergency management and law enforcement personnel or any organization having responsibility for searching for missing or lost persons. Prerequisites: Permission Form if Exp/Jr. FF Open to Ages 14+ Instructors: Kentucky Emergency Management CLASS 21: Weather Related Emergencies (X0000) This is a one day course that will be held on both Saturday and Sunday. Fire departments today do much more than just respond to fires. The fire service has an increasing role as an all-hazard response agency. Each year, Kentucky experiences a wide variety of weather phenomena which ultimately leads to responses from the local fire department and other public safety agencies. The morning session of this course will include information about some of the more common weather phenomena experienced in Kentucky, how to pre-plan for it, ways to anticipate its arrival, and discuss ways to improve fire department response in its aftermath. In the afternoon session, a SKYWARN Weather Spotter class will be presented by the National Weather Service. Prerequisites: Permission Form if Exp/Jr. FF Open to Ages 14+ Instructors: Kentucky Emergency Management
15 CLASS 22: LANDING ZONES (P0000) This 4 hour course will be held on Saturday morning. This course will cover air ambulances, when and where to set up a landing zone, landing zone safety and guiding helicopters to landing zones. Continuing education hours will be available for this course. This class is geared toward the First Responder and EMT levels of prehospital care. Open to Ages 14+ Instructors: Air Methods CLASS 23: PEDIATRIC ABUSIVE HEAD TRAUMA (P0000) This is a Sunday Morning class only. In the 2010 Regular Session Kentucky Legislators enacted House Bill 285. This is an Act that amends or creates various provisions throughout Kentucky s statutory framework and through those amendments mandates training in recognition of pediatric abuse head trauma. This 1.5 hour class will fulfill this requirement. Open to Ages 16+ Instructors: Kentucky Board of Emergency Medical Services CLASS 24: ICS FOR SMALL & RURAL DEPARTMENTS (FF0000) The class is a two day NFA class starting on Saturday Morning. The class deals with the Incident Command System and how it can be used in small and rural departments for all types of incidents. The class will be scenario based using equipment that is available to small rural departments on incidents ranging from missing persons to house fires.
16 Instructors: State Fire Rescue Instructors Open to Ages 14+ CLASS 25: MODULAR EMERGENCY RESPONSE RADIOLOGICAL TRANSPORTATION TRAINING The Full 2-Day MERRTT program is delivered in approximately 16 classroom hours and includes all of the following modules: 1. Radiological Basics 2. Biological Effects 3. Radioactive Material Shipping Packages 4. Hazard Recognition 5. Initial Response Actions 6. Patient Handling 7. Incident Control 8. Radiological Survey Instruments & Dosimetry Devices 9. Transportation of Safeguards Material 10. DOE Shipments and Resources 11. Decontamination, Disposal and Documentation 12. Waste Isolation Pilot Plant 13. Pre-Hospital Practices 14. Transportation by Rail 15. Incident Command 16. Public Information Officer In addition to the modules listed above, 4 practical hands-on activities will also be conducted. These activities will cover: 1. Radiological Instrument Use 2. Patient Handling 3. Assessing Package Integrity 4. Survey of Contaminated Personnel 5. Picture Practical
17 Open to Ages 18+ Instructors: United States Department of Energy & Radioactive Materials Section Kentucky Radiation Health Branch CLASS 26: FIREWORKS/PYROTECHNICS This class is an 8 hour class on Saturday only. This class will provide firefighters information about temporary retail locations, permanent locations for retail sale of fireworks, and retail locations that are exempt from licensing. Display fireworks, will be discussed, such as professional shows that are put on in communities, and how fire chiefs can ensure their areas are safe and those lighting them are following state and federal laws. Open to Ages 14+ Instructors: Kentucky State Fire Marshalls Office CLASS 27: COMPANY INSPECTOR 1 This class is the first part of the new Kentucky State Fire Marshal s Fire Inspector program. This program is to educate firefighters on basic fire prevention inspection techniques, laws and regulations. This is an 8 hour class offered on Sunday only. 18 CLASS 28: RAILWAY SAFETY OPERATION LIFESAVER This is a 4 hour course offered on Saturday only. The course includes information critical for preparing emergency personnel to respond to railroad incidents such as: followup response to the collision scene; overview of on-scene hazards, including electrical, mechanical, chemical, and others; equipment and rolling stock identification; an overview of hazardous materials; how to stop a train in an emergency; and interpreting train consist documentation. Instructors: Travis Warf, Operation Lifesaver Open to Ages 14+ CLASS 29: PREVENTION OF AND RESPONSE TO SUICIDE BOMBING INCIDENTS This is a 4 hour class on Saturday Morning only. It is an awareness level course sponsored by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), a division of the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS). This training course is designed for state, local, and tribal first responders and other individuals in the community who are responsible for responding to and planning for a suicide bombing threat or event. Successful preparation and response for future suicide bombing threats in the U.S. will require emergency response agencies to complete extensive preparatory actions, develop plans, acquiring equipment, and conducting training and exercises that focus on likely
19 attack scenarios. Upon completion of this course, participants will have an awareness of the suicide bombing threat, their role in community situational awareness, and personal protection issues. Instructor: Arch Sebastian, Retired Lexington FD Open to Ages 14+ NEW! KY Fire Commission Approved Explorer/Junior Firefighter Guidelines 1. We Welcome Explorers/Jr. FFs! This is our first fire school following the new Fire Commission Explorer guidelines that were implemented January 1, The Mountain Firefighters Association and SFRT will make sure that these guidelines are followed. This will be a learning process for all, please bear with us and have patience during this transition. 2. Students attending classes under the age of 18 must complete and submit the Explorer permission form. 3. Students ages wanting to take Drivers Training must submit a copy of their driver s license and the Explorer Permission Form and bring their own POV to drive. 4. Students ages wanting to take EMS Continuing Education must submit a copy of their First Responder card and the Explorer Permission Form. 5. We observe a zero tolerance policy for disrespectful or disruptive behavior. Explorers/Jr. Firefighters that exhibit disruptive or disrespectful behaviors will be asked to leave. The student s parents (guardian) and the fire chief will be notified of the dismissal.
