2 SPACES Process Slots fill quickly Be Prepared and Register Early 1) Visit the website after December 1 st for events, descriptions and requirements. a. b. Click on Members at the bottom of the page c. Select the Library Tab (See fig.1) d. Scroll down to: i. SPACES - Event descriptions and gear list NOTE: Application fees are non-refundable. (fig 1) 2) Ensure the online record books are up to date. a. Enrollment date (must have one full year in the program before applying for a SPACES event) b. Rank- Record book must show that the Young Marine has met all requirements for the ranks they have held and currently hold. (Date of rank 31 December No Exceptions) c. Schools (can only be entered by National Headquarters Training Department) d. PFT scores- Must have two PFT scores per year entered in the database. (1 st half Jan June /2 nd half July Dec). Last PFT entered must be a passing score. e. All Required Quarterly DDR Training (enter in DDR Section- must show hours earned) f. Any additional requirements as listed in event descriptions g. If the application is denied for any reason you may not reapply for the event or apply for any other SPACES event this year. 3) Check the calendar on the website to see when SPACES registration begins, restricted period ends, and when registration ends.

3 4) Prior to the Registration period opening ensure the Parent/Guardian has reviewed the event description and gear list before deciding whether their Young Marine will attend that event. (Restricted period only lifts unit restrictions it does not lift the requirements each Young Marine must have) 5) Registration period begins a. Log in to the database b. Click on SPACES c. Select the event you wish to register a Young Marine or Adult for d. Click on register next to the name of the person you wish to register i. A note will pop up if the Young Marine does not qualify for the event ii. A pop up box will appear if this is the first time you are registering this person 1. Verify the information is correct 2. Ensure a valid address 3. You do not need the username and password at the top of the box 4. Click on save iii. You will be brought to a page that asks if you wish to register or cancel this request. e. Once you have registered the person for the event i. You will see the list of eligible persons. ii. Next to the name of the person you registered you will see submitted. 6) National Headquarters will process each request in the order they are submitted. a. Deny If the applicant does not meet the requirements b. Pending If the applicant meets all the requirements Once set to pending you will be sent an to the address listed in the database for the one who registered the applicant and you will receive a notice on the home page of the database (fig. 2). (fig 2) i. Once the applicant is set to pending you have 15 days to download all of the information, complete it and send the complete package to National Headquarters.

See next step if you need to go back in to retrieve paperwork. 2. If you have already accessed the above link and need to retrieve information, select SPACES, select event, then select schedule next to the name of the Young Marine or adult in question. Do not send one payment for multiple applications. If paying by credit card, that information must be entered on the invoice. Ensure Young Marine meets all requirements prior to applying for an event. c. If a Young Marine will be discharged prior to or during an event they are ineligible to apply. Young Marines must have at least one year left in the program to be eligible for SPACES. d. Any unit submitting a Young Marine application for a SPACES event must first ensure that the Young Marine s Record Book meets all requirements for said event. If not the application will be denied and the Young Marine will not be able to resubmit for the any event. It is the Unit s responsibility to ensure the Young Marine Record Book is correct prior to submitting for a SPACES event. e. If the unit submits more than the restricted number of applicants during the restricted period for a particular event, all applicants will be denied.

8 ADVANCED LEADERSHIP SCHOOL Description: The Advanced Leadership School is a leadership program for Young Marines who have exhibited exceptional maturity and leadership skill in their units. Adult leaders often call upon this Young Marine to handle leadership situations and provide the inspiration to those under their charge. This two-week school is an intense train-the-trainer program. The school is devoted to honing skills in leadership, close order drill, physical training, and techniques of military instruction. Dates: June 2013 Location: State Military Reservation, Camp Pendleton, Virginia Beach, VA Number of Participants: 50 Young Marines Qualifications: Minimum age: 14 years old (at start of school) Maximum age: None Minimum rank: YM/SSGT with a date of rank on or before 31 December 2012 Minimum TIP: 2 years on or before 1 June 2013 PFT Classification: 3 rd Class (database must be up to date with all scores) Other: Member in good standing. Participated in two overnight unit activities without incident. Must be a national or accredited SLS graduate. Young Marines must meet all qualifications for ranks they hold in addition to all required quarterly DDR training and all PFTs. Young Marines must have at least one year left in the program. Application Fee: $ non-refundable application fee. Additional Costs: Parents are responsible for any additional costs that may be charged at the ticket counter for unaccompanied minor fees and checked baggage fees imposed by the airlines. Unaccompanied Minor fees must be paid round trip at the time of departure from home airport. It is the parent s responsibility to make all unaccompanied minor arrangements with the airline. National Headquarters will provide the name of the adult picking up the Young Marine. Young Marines must have monies to pay for checked baggage for return flight. National Headquarters is not responsible for these charges. Applications: Apply through the Young Marines Database only beginning on 5 January 2013 at 12 PM EST. Units have 15 days to submit completed package once the Young Marine has been placed in pending status. If the Young Marine is denied, the Young Marine may not re-apply for this event or apply for any other SPACES event for this year. Unit Restrictions: Units are restricted to 1 Young Marine in ALS until the restricted period ends at midnight 11 January 2013 EST. (Note: Young Marines must meet all qualification requirements during and after the restricted period). National Headquarters will not choose a Young Marine if more than one is submitted during the restricted period. Additional registrations submitted to National Headquarters over the restricted number prior to 11 January 2013 will result in all registrations being denied.

Young Marines attending ALS will travel wearing the Young Marines National Red T-shirt or a red polo shirt, for easy identification. 3. Young Marines will not bring: lighters, knives, or any form of electronics. They are not authorized and will be confiscated for the duration of the school and returned prior to departure. 4. Cell Phones. We understand the need to travel with cell phones. Please note: all cell phones will be collected at the beginning of the event and returned at the conclusion of the event. Young Marines will be given the opportunity to call home upon arrival at the airport. 5. The emergency contact number is during and after normal business hours, Monday-Friday. Please leave a message at extension 203 for the Director of Training during non-working hours and weekends. A letter with additional contact numbers will be forthcoming following acceptance to this event. 6. Pogey bait will be collected and thrown away. We do not save pogey bait as it attracts critters and is unsanitary. 7. Sunglasses are unauthorized for wear by students during the academy unless medically necessary. 12 SENIOR LEADERSHIP SCHOOL Description: The three training pillars of the Young Marines Program are teaching self-discipline, team building, and Leadership development. The Senior Leadership School (SLS) is the second step leadership school in the Young Marine Program. It is designed to help those Young Marines who have completed Junior Leadership School (JLS) (YM/Sergeants and Staff Sergeants) master the art of interpersonal and leadership skills. Upon completion of this school, the Young Marine graduate should have a working knowledge of how to mentor Junior and Basic Young Marines and how to mentor and work with other Young Marines with the same or different Leadership Styles and Personality types. Sgt Maj, Acad. 1 st Sgt, SLS 1 st Sgt., and 2 Admin Assistants. Must be of appropriate rank and be an ALS graduate.) 30 Great American History Adventure Description: The Great American History Adventure (GAHA) is an education program designed to stimulate an interest in, and respect for the history and traditions of the United States by providing Young Marines an opportunity to visit sites in Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Virginia and Washington, DC. In the Boston area you would visit places such as: Plymouth Rock and Plimoth Plantation, the Adams Homestead, Salem, follow the freedom trail through the streets of Boston and see the Old North Church, the site of the Boston Massacre and Paul Revere s house. In New York you would see places like: Central Park, ground zero and visit the Statue of Liberty on Ellis Island. In Philadelphia you will see the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall and the Betsy Ross House. Visit Battlefield sites such as Valley Forge, Gettysburg, Antietam and Harpers Ferry. While in Virginia we will visit Colonial Williamsburg, Richmond (Civil War Museum), Quantico (Marine Corps Museum) and visit sites in Washington DC. Spend a day as a civil war soldier at Pamplin Park and watch the evening parade at 8 th and I. 37 Wild West Excursion (WWE) Description: Young Marines will be able to see the Wild West. They will visit National Monuments such as Mount Rushmore, and Crazy Horse Memorial. Experience the Old West by riding in Authentic Covered Wagons and see the Buffalo roam. Young Marines will be able to get a taste of the Native American Indian Culture and visit Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and the Wounded Knee Massacre site. Ride on a vintage steam engine train. Young Marines will also partake in cowboy suppers and campfires and participate in an old fashioned hoedown! 40 SCUBA Adventure Description: The SCUBA Adventure gives Young Marines the opportunity to become thoroughly qualified in the Aquatic environment. Young Marines will be taught in the classroom, pool and ocean. Once the Young Marine has completed this course they will obtain their SCUBA Diver Open Water Certification Aquified with a license. Registered Adult Chaperones will also participate in the courses and dives. Registered Adults must be physically fit. All attendees will perform a prequalification test upon arrival. This test will include being able to swim 200 yards non-stop, tread water for 5 minutes with hands above water, and run two miles nonstop. Dates: July 2013 Location: Ft. Young Marines will learn about Boating safety, Navigation, knot-tying, soundings and heaving line. They will work as teams in building a boat and taking a longboat excursion for 4 days and 3 nights building cooperative, leadership and maritime skills.
