3 RLMI Tour No. 32 On pages you will find the itinerary and registration details for the next RLMI Tour (No. 32) to take place on Friday, 15 June don't forget to mark it on your calendar. Ontario Police College Tour, Aylmer and Rush Creek Wines Tour and Tasting and Wayside Dining Lounge Buffet (Talbotville) Featuring Yellow Lake Perch and Prime Rib of Beef Tour Date: Friday, 15 June 2018 Closing Date and Final Payment of $55.00 per person is 18 May 2018 Vimy 100 Pilgrimage On Wednesday 17 January 2018 Mike Steele and Gerry Treble presented on the topic "The Vimy 2017 Pilgrimage 7 April 2017: The Good, The Bad and the Ugly. It was both a humbling and memorable experience to be present at this important event at Vimy Ridge, although the event did get some negative press recently about logistics. Mike Steele and Gerry Treble were both in attendance at Vimy and offered impressions and experiences from each of their perspectives. Mike went as part of the "official" delegation and his experience was drastically different from that reported in the newspaper. Gerry, along with Randy Warden and Rick Phillips, attended with their wives as part of a group including 1st Hussars and RCL Vimy (London) Branch # 145. See the next page regarding Pte George Wallace Shaw. 3
4 VIMY RIDGE BUGLER- It is reported that Pte George Wallace Shaw most likely understated his age (19 for 16?), joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force and actually played the bugle during the Battle of Vimy Ridge. It is reported that Shaw was so young that when the soldiers lined up to shave, he would take out his metal mirror, lather up and mimic the other soldiers. (He apparently never put a blade in his razor). The Last Post and Rouse at the 2017 Ceremony at Vimy were played on Pte Shaw s bugle, the same bugle that he had with him at Vimy Ridge in In the moments leading up to the battle, as a bugler with the 3rd Battallion (Toronto Regiment), then about 18 years old, Pte Shaw played his Hawkes and Son brass bugle to rally the troops. London can be honoured that Pte. Shaw s grandson, David Cunningham, plays Last Post and Rouse on the bugle at each of the semi-annual dinners held by RCL Vimy (London) Branch # 145. Ian Haley expressed appreciation with gifts of engraved letter openers. 4
5 Canadians in the American Civil War On Wednesday, 21 February 2018 Mr. Mike McDonnell presented at our General Meeting. Approximately 50,000 Canadians served in the American Civil War. Four Canadians attained the rank of General in the Union army and 29 men were awarded the Medal of Honour. One Canadian who served in the Confederate Army is buried in Arlington National Cemetery. Much interesting information was presented. LCol Ian Hayley thanking Mike McDonnell UNEFME, a Primer in Pearsonian Peacekeeping. RLMI Vice President, LCol I. C. (Ian) Haley, CD was our speaker on Wednesday, 21 March UNEFME was established in October 1973 to supervise the cease-fire between Egyptian and Israeli forces and, following the conclusion of the agreements of 18 January 1974 and 4 September 1975, to supervise the redeployment of Egyptian and Israeli forces and to control the buffer zones established under those agreements. The mandate for this Mission expired in July 1979 and the troops were withdrawn. The UN Emergency Force Middle East (UNEFME) medal on the obverse, shows the representation of the UN symbol surmounted by the straight letters UN, both in bas-relief. On the reverse, is an inscription bearing the words, "IN THE SERVICE OF PEACE (see next page). 5
6 The UNEFME ribbon bears a wide central band of a sand or buff colour symbolizing the Sinai Desert with two narrow dark blue lines through the middle, representing the Suez Canal. Two wide bars of UN blue appear at either end. Book of Remembrance: War Dead and Veteran Tributes London and area s "Book of Remembrance" is a two volume memorial of the names, with some photographs, that honours our War Dead. The first volume was created by "Memorial Cross Mothers" who lost sons as a result of service in the Second World War ( ) and was completed in 1949 listing 513 men who died during the war. Book 2 is an expanded version completed in 1998 by the Royal Canadian Legion Vimy Branch # 145 to provide additional information and the names of those omitted in Volume 1. Both books are displayed in the lobby at London s City Hall at 300 Dufferin Street in London. Each day the books are opened to a different page for viewing. We are grateful to Mrs. P. Hammond for providing us with a copy of the Book of Remembrance. 6
