1 Course Program 4th AOCMF Advanced Course on Orbital Reconstruction May 06 08, 2010, Costa d En Blanes/Mallorca, Spain

2 Mission Our mission is to continuously set standards in postgraduate medical education and to foster the sharing of medically guided expertise in a worldwide network of healthcare professionals to improve patient care in trauma or disorders of the musculoskeletal system. The AO Principles of fracture management Fracture reduction and fixation to restore anatomical relationships. 1 2 Fracture fixation providing absolute or relative stability, as required by the personality of the fracture, the patient, and the injury. Early and safe mobilization and rehabilitation of the injured part and the patient as a whole. 4 3 Preservation of the blood supply to soft tissues and bone by gentle reduction techniques and careful handling.

3 4th AOCMF Advanced Course on Orbital Reconstruction 3 Welcome The orbit is probably the most challenging part for interdisciplinary work on different pathologies and deformities in the craniofacial skeleton. It is a key area for individual appearance and function of the visual sense, and it is a highly complex area of the facial skeleton that challenges not only multiple specialties but also the industry in terms of providing the best implants, instruments, and protocols to deal with this region appropriately. The 4th AOCMF Advanced Course on Orbital Reconstruction shall stimulate the discussion, give answers to multiple questions, and give room for further developments in the field of orbital surgery. The addressed participants are experienced surgeons in the field of reconstructive orbital surgery with a special interest in interdisciplinary patient care. In the beginning, this three-day event is focussing on reconstructive orbital surgery together with oncology. The second part is focussing on primary and secondary posttraumatic orbital reconstruction. With the third advanced orbital course we implemented already a half-day hands-on course for virtual planning and quality control using iplan software. With this educational event we will again implement such a hands-on course for practical use of computerassisted planning in daily routine of orbital reconstructive surgery. We hope to enrich the discussion around the field of orbital surgery which proved to be one of the spearheads in the AOCMF educational events. We are looking forward to welcome you on the Spanish island of Mallorca on May 6 8, Yours sincerely Content 2 Mission 2 The AO Principles of fracture management 3 Welcome 4 Target participants 4 Course objectives 4 Course description 5 Chairpersons 5 Invited faculty 6 Thursday, May 06, Friday, May 07, Saturday, May 08, Course organization 9 Course logistics 9 Course information 10 Course venue 11 Upcoming courses Prof. Dr. Dr. Nils-Claudius Gellrich Hannover Medical School Hannover, Germany Prof. Dr. Dr. Beat Hammer cfc hirslanden Aarau, Switzerland

4 4 4th AOCMF Advanced Course on Orbital Reconstruction Target participants Experienced surgeons with a special interest in orbital reconstruction. Course objectives The main objectives are to: present the current knowledge about orbital surgery and reconstruction in traumatic conditions of tumor patients; discuss difficult conditions of the anophthalmic orbit; demonstrate different materials, new procedures, and developments in orbital reconstruction; evaluate outcomes, successes, and approaches to complications associated with the repair of complex orbital fractures; describe innovative documentation methods (e.g. standardized video taping) and computer-aided planning incl. a computer-assisted planning hands-on workshop; create a forum for multidisciplinary communication and comparison of results and techniques. Course description This course is designed as a state-of-the-art analysis of surgical challenges of the orbit. This includes a focused, advanced discussion of approaches, materials, and challenges in tumor-related diseases, trauma, and posttraumatic deformities of the orbit. The course consists of lectures, panel discussions on controversial topics as well as patient presentations by faculty members and participants.
