Predators prey on the weak and distracted. Listen to your instincts; if something doesn t feel right, it probably isn t. Contact the Police and seek a safe location. The Police will provide an escort. On December 28, 2011, as part of our continuing effort to ensure the safety and security of NOVA campuses, a full- scale functional active shooter exercise was held at the Annandale Campus. This exercise followed Homeland Security Exercise Evaluation Planning (HSEEP) protocols. This exercise culminated six months of planning by NOVA s Office of Emergency Management and Planning (OEMP), with support from NOVA PD. More than 90 NOVA students and community volunteers participated as role players. Other participants, besides OEMP and NOVA Police personnel, included: Fairfax County Police and Fire and Rescue personnel, Virginia State Police officers, Virginia Emergency Management officials, and emergency management officials from three local universities. Exercise realism was enhanced by many of the role players, who were made up with realistic-looking injuries, and a smoke generator to simulate fire. The scenario provided an excellent opportunity for NOVA OEMP personnel and PD s first responders to exercise their tactics, plans, equipment, and coordination with local jurisdictions. Also observing the exercise were the Chiefs of Police from George Mason University, The University of the District Columbia, and Howard University. These public safety officials complimented NOVA Police Chief Daniel Dusseau on the professionalism of the college s emergency personnel and police under his command. This exercise complements NOVA s regular inhouse annual active shooter training. Future joint jurisdictional emergency exercises will be held in 2012, along with quarterly departmental table top exercises for each campus. 3 P A G E 3 Four New NOVA Police Academy Graduates On December 19, 2011, four NOVA police recruits gradated from The Northern Virginia Criminal Justice Academy. Officers Stephen Allen and Robert Corwin are assigned to the Alexandria Campus; Officer Neil Anglin is assigned to the Woodbridge Campus; and Officer Asiya Al-Hadid is assigned to the Annandale Campus. Our recruits went through 20 rigorous weeks of training covering basic police knowledge including criminal law, firearms, emergency vehicle operations, defensive tactics and first aid. Two of our recruits earned special attention. Out of 80 academy recruits, Officer Allen finished in 2nd place in firearms training and Officer Anglin finished 3rd in the physical fitness portion. We congratulate our new officers for their success and welcome them to our NOVA Police family! You will see them around serving our college. 4 P A G E 4 Recent NOVA Police Community Outreach NOVA Police Toy Drive On November 1, 2011, NOVA Police started their first toy drive for the Annandale Christian Community for Action Child Development Center. This toy drive ended on December 21 with more than 50 toys delivered to the kids at the ACC. Thanks to the generosity of the NOVA community, scores of kids received a gift from someone at NOVA. 5 P A G E NOVA PD Biggest Loser Competition On September 12, 2011, NOVA Police sponsored a Biggest Loser competition that included the NOVA PD and the NOVA Community for all six campuses. The competition lasted until November 21. The winners were selected based on the most weight lost individually and as a team. Sergeant Christopher Ovenden, recently transferred to the Alexandria Campus, won the individual competition losing 25 lbs. Team Annandale won the team competition losing 66 lbs. Sgt.
