1 HI LITES Published December Yearly Saskatchewan Command The Royal Canadian Legion Article Deadline: November 15th ****************************************************************** DECEMBER 2012 VOLUME 17 Comrades All: FROM THE PRESIDENT S DESK The year 2012 is pretty much behind us now but what a busy and productive year it has been! It is rewarding and satisfying to see that Saskatchewan Command remains strong and active due to the determination of our branches and members. Our great organization continues to best serve our veterans and their families, and to diligently engage in the remembrance of all service personnel past and present. I am sure that most of you are now aware that there have been significant changes in our office personnel since the summer months. Comrade Liz Cadore had decided to move back to her home country of England. Comrade Cherilyn Cooke has taken the position of Command Service Officer, Jessie Jardine is our new Administrative Assistant and Wendy Wenaus is our new Command Accountant. All are quickly getting orientated in their new positions and I hope that you will welcome them, as that opportunity arises. Zone Rallies were held in early spring and it would certainly be nice to see more of our Comrades out to these. These rallies are a great opportunity for our newer members to learn about their organization and for everyone to share their successes and failures. All branches would benefit individually and collectively. We also used this year s rallies to address the importance of Leadership as it certainly affects the future of our Command. We focused on leadership at the branch level and reviewed the duties of all branch officers. This branch leadership seminar and leadership brochures were well received and will be an active tool for our leadership Committee.

2 I would like to thank all our comrades who attended the Dominion Convention in Halifax this June. It was the opportunity of our approximately 80 delegates to have a voice in determining the future of the Royal Canadian Legion. Also most notable, was the election of our Past President Peter Piper, to the position of Vice President of Dominion Command. Congratulations Comrade Peter. I know you will serve us well! I think we should all be proud of the Wounded Warriors Weekend that centred around Nipawin Br. #120 this summer. They with the help of other supporting branches and members orchestrated a fantastic weekend for wounded service personnel from all across North America. It was a chance for them just to relax and share their experiences with their peers. The stories and results that came about from that weekend, from the veterans themselves, are a direct testament to the fact that the Royal Canadian Legion can, and does, make a difference in the lives of these veterans and their families. The Saskatchewan Government and SGI have made available a Veterans Plate for motorcycles and snowmobiles to compliment those that are already available for regular motor vehicles. They have asked Saskatchewan Command to look after the applications and they can be sent to our office. Saskatchewan Command is proceeding to establish a new program called Operation Leave the Streets Behind. We have joined with all the other Provincial Commands to help identify within our Commands, veterans (and possible families) who are considered homeless or hidden homeless. Initially, and in its simplest form, it will be to identify these persons and to identify the reasons they are in their present lifestyle. Ultimately the goal is to get them off the streets as soon as possible, secure temporary shelter, and to find, create or share transitional programs that can get them back on their feet. Our Poppy Campaigns, Remembrance Day Services, and Poster and Literary Contests are now over for another year. I appreciate the effort and professionalism that our members and branches display on behalf of the Royal Canadian Legion, as they conduct these most important services to their communities. Thank you all. Comrades as one busy year ends, another busy and equally as important year will soon begin. However hopefully December will now see you some time for family and friends also. On behalf of Wendy and myself we wish you a healthy, happy and active Holiday Season. BRENT WIGNES Provincial President Saskatchewan Command 2

Thanks to all the Branches and Ladies Auxiliaries that support and promote this program. A huge thanks to the Nutana Branch No. 362 that provide the colour party for the opening and closing ceremonies on a yearly basis. It is very much appreciated by Saskatchewan Command. The National Camp was held in Charlottetown, PEI with 25 athletes and 4 officials attending. Again, the week was a huge success. Many of you have even visited us here in Regina which we love to see! But how many have actually wondered what we exactly do on a day to day basis? Well, first I should introduce our cast of characters. Our front line lady is Jessie Jardine our administrative assistant. Jessie answers the phone, does all the filing, (and there s a lot of filing!), makes up awesome spreadsheets for us, handles the military recognition book submissions, does all the administration for the Literary and Poster Contest including making all the certificates and sorting all the awards, tracks which branches have sent in which reports, does all the preparation for council meetings, takes the minutes, coordinates all the poppy orders and packages and sends them out, creates the mailings to all the branches, stuffs all the envelopes, answers questions, researches current and past members, handles all membership for the Saskatchewan Holding Branch #000, manages databases, gets the mail ready every day, opens the mail and distributes it, and does all of this by 9:00am with a smile on her face! She spends the rest of day asking What can I do to help? Wendy, our accountant, works part time Wednesday to Friday. She makes the bills, pays the bills, mails the bills, figures out what we owe, what you owe and what everyone else owes. Somehow, she keeps it all straight in two separate accounts, (poppy and general) and manages to make it all balance at the end of the day. Cherilyn is our Service Officer. Her job is help vets old vets, young vets, middle vets, modern vets - any vet at any time. She works daily with Veterans Affairs Canada to help vets get the benefits they are entitled to using a very tricky and secure stand-alone computer system that requires no less than four passwords! She works with the Service Bureau in Dominion Command and all the other service officers across the country and is always ready to assist branch service officers. In her spare time, she reads governmental acts, legislation and policies to keep up with the latest information on veteran benefits and occasionally escapes the office to do a seminar or presentation on how the Legion supports military members, past and present. And then there s our Provincial Executive Director, Donna Gosselin. Quite simply, Donna does everything. She is the keeper of corporate memory, and has all those manuals memorized. She can answer any question you throw at her, and, quite literally, know where the bodies are buried in the basement. She types as fast as she drives, (which is really quite frightening!) and can easily handle 27 things at once. Donna is the heart and soul of Saskatchewan Command and has spent the last 38 years making sure everything runs smoothly. On top of all that, Donna makes it a joy and a pleasure to come to work. She cares as deeply for her staff as she does every member of the legion and every veteran we are here to help. Ours is a very very busy office and the phone rings constantly. If you call and get a busy signal, it is because we are helping another branch, another vet, another member of the Executive Council or Dominion Command. Please bear with us we want to help you too. Your new Provincial Service Officer 22
