The Trigg Patriot DEBBIE MALLORY AUGUST 2015 CHAPTER SERVICE AWARD HONOREE This is a first for our chapter! Our August service honoree is NOT a member of our chapter, but she is definitely an active member of our Auxiliary. Debbie is our August honoree because of her work on the upcoming Gala of Tables. She has helped decorate our chapter table. She has also made five hand-sewn haversacks to present to the educators as their gift from the Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter. Thank you, Debbie! 1

DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE READING JULY 4, 2015 Approximately 100 Trigg County citizens joined the compatriots of the Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter for some living history and the second annual reading of our nation s Declaration of Independence. The chapter also provided uniforms for kids to dress up and take photographs. It was an excellent event, and is quickly becoming a new tradition for the Fourth of July in Trigg County. Here are some photos from the event. 3

BELL RINGING AND DECLARATION PREAMBLE READING - WENDELL OURY CHAPTER DAR MURRAY, KENTUCKY COURTHOUSE JULY 8, 2015 On Wednesday, July 8, the Wendell Oury Chapter DAR in Murray sponsored a community bell ringing and a public reading of the preamble to the Declaration of Independence at the Calloway County Courthouse. The ladies of the chapter invited the Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter to provide flags for display and fire a flintlock salute. Compatriot Barry Grogan of the James Campen Chapter joined Geoff Baggett and Steve Mallory in the event that was attended by approximately 200 people. Barry and Steve presented the United States and Betsy Ross flags while Geoff played a march on the drum. At the end of the event, Geoff commanded an three-shot salute by Barry and Steve. Press coverage was outstanding, culminating with a front-page story in the local Murray newspaper. The Wendell Oury Chapter DAR has become an excellent partner for the Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter in area patriotic and history events. 7

FIVE COL. STEPHEN TRIGG CHAPTER COMPATRIOTS TO ATTEND BATTLE OF BLUE LICKS MEMORIAL SERVICE The Commonwealth of Kentucky hosts only one National/District Color Guard event each year. It is the annual commemoration of the Battle of Blue Licks in mid-august at the Blue Licks State Park. This commemoration follows the annual Kentucky Society SAR meeting, held at the park lodge during the morning of the commemoration day. Following a society luncheon at the lodge, Compatriots will shuttle to the Blue Licks memorial to conduct the service. This month Geoff Baggett, Steve Mallory, Eddie Price, Ken Oakley, and Ron Drennan will be representing the Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter at this important Color Guard event. Eddie Price has been invited to speak at the event. He will also present the Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter wreath. Our other four compatriots will fire weapons in the three-shot gun salute. Following the service, attendees will enjoy the annual reenactment of the Battle of Blue Licks, the Revolutionary War battle in which our namesake, Col. Stephen Trigg, lost his life. 9
PATRIOT GRAVE MARKING MEDAL # All members of our chapter are pursuing the Patriot Grave Marking Medal by their participation in recognized ceremonies. Credit for participation can be earned through several methods, primarily by taking part in the program Two other methods involve labor and cash (minimum $20) donations. GRAVE MARKING MEDAL PROGRESS Name Graves Marked # Remaining James Sumner 11 4 Glenn Greenfield 10 5 Bobby Skinner 5 10 Ron Drennan 10 5 Randle Cruse 8 7 John Humphries 8 7 Travis McCloud 3 12 Billy Redd 2 13 Gary Thompson 1 14 Dallas McCloud 2 13 Ryan McCloud 2 13 Connor McCloud 1 14 Dilly Anderson 1 14 Kevin Stroud 1 14 Joshua Claussen 1 14 Dennis Adams 3 12 Cody Burlingame 3 12 Eddie Price 3 12 Dickie Thomas 3 12 Steve Francis 6 9 Robert Ward 3 12 Jack Dawson 1 14 Second Award Tony Dothsuk 3 12 Ken Oakley 1 14 Jerry Burlingame 1 14 Third Award Geoff Baggett 8 7 Steve Mallory
JERRY BURLINGAME RECEIVES PATRIOT GRAVE MARKING MEDAL On July 4, 2015, Compatriot and 2014 New Member of the Year Jerry Burlingame became the Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter s fourth recipient of the SAR s Patriot Grave Marking Medal. He earned the medal in less than a year and a half as a new member in the SAR. Chapter President Geoff Baggett awarded him the medal, provided by the Kentucky Society SAR, at the Fourth of July reading of the Declaration of Independence. Unfortunately, Jerry was forced to relocate for the next six years (he calls it a temporary sojourn) to Ft. Dodge, Iowa, due to a job change. His company s recent contract at Ft. Campbell was not renewed, so he took a promotion in order to remain with his company until retirement. That promotion requires him to move to Iowa. He plans to retire at the end of his tenure there and return home to Cadiz. We will certainly miss Jerry at our chapter events in the coming years, but will encourage him to find a local chapter in Iowa and apply for dual membership. 11
KENTUCKY CENTURION MEDAL # We have completed the two-year look-back through January 2013, gone over all of the records of our events, and updated an attendance sheet for all members. The progress of all of our active compatriots is recorded below. Once you reach the 100-event threshold and the medal is available, the Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter will award it to you! 15 SERVICE TO VETERANS MEDAL # Every active member of the Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter is steadily making progress toward the SAR s prestigious Service to Veterans Medal. To receive this award, a Compatriot must accumulate 5,000 points for activities, service, and donations to veterans causes. This service includes participation in the various Special Observances in honor of veterans (holidays, grave markings, etc...), time invested in service projects, visiting with veterans, attending or participating in the funerals of veterans, and donation of money or goods. # We are able to track involvement in our various events and medal presentations, but it is CRITICAL that all members report their activities outside of our normal chapter events.
