1 MAINTENANCE WORKER I/II Class specifications are intended to present a descriptive list of the range of duties performed by employees in the class. Specifications are not intended to reflect all duties performed with the job. DEFINITION To perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled duties involved in the maintenance and repair of a multitude of public works and park systems and facilities including roads, utilities, sanitation, facilities, and landscaped areas; and to perform specialized projects as required. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS Maintenance Worker I This is the entry level class in the Maintenance Worker series. This class is distinguished from the Maintenance Worker II by the performance of the more routine tasks and duties assigned to positions within the series including participating in the less complex, semi-skilled maintenance and repair activities of public works and park systems and facilities. Since this class is typically used as a training class, employees may have only limited or no directly related work experience. Maintenance Worker II This is the full journey level class within the Maintenance Worker series. Employees within this class are distinguished from the Maintenance Worker I by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned including performing skilled maintenance and repair activities. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the I level, or when filled from the outside, have prior experience. SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED Maintenance Worker I - Receives immediate supervision from assigned supervisory staff. Maintenance Worker II - Receives general supervision from assigned supervisory staff. May exercise technical and functional supervision over lower level staff. ESSENTIAL AND MARGINAL FUNCTION STATEMENTS -- Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: Essential Functions: 1. Participate in the repair and maintenance of a variety of water and sanitation systems and facilities including pumps, boosters, wells, water main lines, water meters, and fire hydrants; repair leaks in systems; install and replace customer service lines; flush sewer lines; perform water and wastewater sampling duties; participate in flow monitoring.

Perform the maintenance of City roadways including patching and sealing; repair and maintain sidewalks, curbs, and gutters; perform the maintenance of road signs; perform graffiti removal activities; maintain storm drains in good working condition. 3. Participate in a variety of plant maintenance and landscape duties including trimming trees and shrubs, pulling weeds, mowing and edging lawns, raking recreation areas, watering plants and trees, sweeping, and cleaning fallen trees from the public paths and walkways. 4. Prepare and apply a variety of pesticides, insecticides, fertilizers, and other pest and disease eradication and control chemicals as necessary. 5. Maintain the parks irrigation system; set irrigation clocks and controls; perform minor repairs including replacing broken heads and repairing minor breaks in the water lines; assist with major irrigation repairs as necessary. 6. Inspect and operate a variety of tools and equipment including power tools, lawn mowers, trucks, tractors, backhoe, and jack hammer; perform general maintenance duties including refueling, changing oil, and lubricating parts; make minor adjustments as necessary. 7. Conduct field inspections to ensure the safety of the public facilities; note possible safety hazards or cause of injury. 8. Maintain accurate logs and records of work performed; prepare appropriate reports and documentation. Marginal Functions: 1. Respond to on-call emergency situations as required. 2. Respond to, resolve, or direct citizen inquiries and complaints; follow-up with assigned supervisor. 3. Perform graffiti removal activities; prepare supporting documentation. 4. Pick up litter from grounds and empty trash containers throughout assigned parks. 5. Perform special projects as assigned. 6. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

3 Page 3 Knowledge of: MAINTENANCE WORKER I QUALIFICATIONS General principles and practices of public works and park maintenance. Care and operation of a variety of power tools and equipment. Safe work practices. Ability to: Perform semi-skilled duties in the maintenance and repair of park grounds, water and sanitation systems and facilities, roadways, and street lighting equipment. Learn proper care and maintenance as applied to individual plant life. Operate a variety of power tools and equipment in a safe and effective manner. Understand and follow oral and written instructions. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contracted in the course of work. Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include the following: --Standing or walking for extended periods of time --Operating assigned maintenance equipment. Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for: --Making observations --Communicating with others --Reading and writing --Operating assigned maintenance equipment and vehicles. Maintain mental capacity which allows for effective interaction and communication with others. Experience and Training Guidelines Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: Experience: One (1) year of experience in the repair and maintenance of park grounds, water and sanitation systems, facilities, roadways, or street lighting systems. Training: Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance. License or Certificate Possession of a California Class C Driver s License.

4 Page 4 WORKING CONDITIONS Travel from site to site; some exposure to dust and noise; some heavy lifting, standing, climbing; may work at heights; work in inclement weather conditions. MAINTENANCE WORKER II QUALIFICATIONS In addition to the qualifications listed for Maintenance Worker I: Knowledge of: Material, equipment, and supplies needed to perform assigned maintenance functions. Procedures and techniques of the maintenance and repair of assigned public works and park facilities. Procedures and techniques of the maintenance and repair of City roadways. Ability to: Perform skilled duties in the maintenance and repair of park grounds, water and sanitation systems, roadways, and related facilities. Observe possible safety hazards and react accordingly. Perform work assigned in the absence of supervision. Experience and Training Guidelines Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: Experience: Two (2) years of responsible experience in the repair and maintenance of park grounds, water and sanitation systems and facilities, roadways, or street lighting systems comparable to a Maintenance Worker I in the City of Chino Hills. Training: Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance. License or Certificate Possession of a California Class B Driver s License. May require possession of, or ability to obtain, a grade II Water Treatment Operator Certificate issued by the State of California.
