They provide the backbone for this chapter, and we all are indebted to them for the many initiatives which improve our professional lives. While they have a great seriousness of purpose, they are also terrific people who are easy to work with and eager to share their knowledge and insights. 2 Volume , Issue 6 December 2013 Community Service News Upcoming Community Service Event to Benefit Veterans The veterans of this country have proudly served us and this country. Many in our region are being treated at the various Veteran Health Care Centers. The National Salute to Veteran Patients is held during the week of February 14 each year. The focus of this program is on paying tribute and expressing appreciation to our veterans. The 2013 National Salute program was held during February 10 to 16. See for more information. Since 1999 Valentines for Veterans has helped brighten the lives of these deserving veterans by providing valentine cards to veterans. This effort is now part of the National Salute to Veteran Patients. The AGA Boston Chapter s Community Service Committee is looking for chapter members to work on this project. Anyone involved in a youth group or knows of a youth group that could work on producing valentines would be welcome. More information will be available in future newsletters. Anyone interested or looking for more information should contact Benjamin Howe at Benjamin.Howe@va.gov or Jane Gustowski at jgustowski@charter.net. Thank you for considering helping out in this worthwhile endeavor. AGA Members Again Show Their Generosity The Community Service Committee collected various items at the October 17, 2013 Fraud Seminar at Lombardo s. Thank you for the generous donations to Lions Recycle for Sight Program, Career Closet of Interfaith Social Services, Autism Association of Metro West, St. John s Food for the Poor, and Pets In Need. Thanks to all who donated to these worthwhile charities. All of these charities appreciated your generosity. Annual Holiday Lunch and Charity Fundraiser The Boston Chapter of the AGA will host its annual Holiday Party / Charity Fundraiser on December 5, Maggiano s Little Italy Restaurant in Boston is always a great host with excellent food. This event is our major annual charitable fundraiser. This year, we are again sponsoring a raffle where the prizes will include gift certificates, admission tickets to sporting events, museums, wine and other prizes. For the tenth year in a row we will donate the proceeds from the raffle to Christmas in the City, a local organization that provides a funfilled party for children (and their parents) from local homeless shelters. 4 Volume , Issue 6 December 2013 Annual Holiday Luncheon and Charity Raffle Thursday, December 5, 2013 at Maggiano s Little Italy, Boston, MA The Association of Government Accountants - Boston Chapter is pleased to announce its annual Charity Raffle for the benefit of Christmas in the City*. Tickets are $1 each, 6 for $5, or an arm s length for $10. The Community Service Committee offers a special thank you to the local businesses and organizations for their donations. We ask our members and friends to support them. The following is a list of raffle items donated as of November 29, 2013: Boston Red Sox John Lester Autographed Baseball The Red Sox, Boston s famous major league baseball team, was founded in 1901 as one of the American League s eight charter franchises. The Red Sox name originates from the iconic uniform feature. Every home game since May 15, 2003 has been sold out a span of over six years and a major league baseball record. Buttonwood Park Zoo One Year Family Membership The Buttonwood Park Zoo is owned and operated by the City of New Bedford with the mission to be a significant contributor to the conservation of nature both at home and throughout the world. EcoTarium Family Pass (2 adults and 2 children) EcoTarium is a museum of science and nature where visitors are encouraged to explore the natural world through a unique indoor-outdoor experience. The museum features hands-on exhibits, indoor and outdoor wildlife habitats, interpretive nature trails, a living pond and meadow exhibit, a planetarium, the region s only treetop walkway, and narrow-gauge train. Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum 4 Complimentary Admission Passes The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum is an intimate collection of fine and decorative art and a vibrant, innovative venue for contemporary artists, musicians, and scholars. JFK Library and Museum 4 Two for One Admission Passes The Library and Museum is a research and educational center focusing on the life and times of John F. Kennedy, while also highlighting the career of his brother Robert F. Kennedy, and the accomplishments of First Lady Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy. Middleton Golf Course 1 Round of Golf for 2 Persons (weekday only) The Middleton Golf Course is a beautiful 18 hole, Par 3 golf course hat measures a challenging 3,215 years. The Brown family constructed the course in 1965, with the professional design services of noted golf course architect, Geoffrey S. Cornish. Holes vary in length from 115 to 240 years, with large tees and greens, and gently rolling fairways. New England Aquarium 2 admission passes Founded in 1969, the New England Aquarium is a global leader in ocean exploration and marine conservation. The Aquarium is one of the premier visitor attractions in Boston, with over 1.3 million visitors a year, and a major public education resource. New England Patriots Charitable Foundation Danny Amendola autographed football The New England Patriots, commonly called the Pats, was an original member of the American Football League and joined the National Football League in the 1970 merger of both leagues. Through the New England Patriots Charitable Foundation, the team and the Kraft family are proud to support numerous non-profit organizations throughout New England. New England Revolution Charitable Foundation 4 tickets to any regular season 2013 soccer game On October 17, 1995, the New England Revolution was established as one of Major League Soccer's 10 original clubs with Foxboro Stadium as its home venue. Changing exhibitions explore illustration masters, and everything from children s picture books, graphic novels, to animation art. Pats Peak 2 Lift Tickets (Not Valid Weekends or Holidays) Pats Peak located in Henniker, NH is a full service winter fun park with day and night skiing, snowboarding and snow tubing. Peabody Essex Museum 4 Complementary passes This museum s collection includes almost a million objects, housed in a breathtaking building and surrounded by beautifully landscaped grounds and historic homes. It houses amazing examples of art and culture from around the world. Plimoth Plantation 2 Admission Passes Plimoth Plantation brings history to life in a fun and interactive setting. It is an historical experience that has been delighting visitors of all ages for 60 years. Salem Wax Museum Salem Hysteria Passes (two free passes for two admissions to The Salem Wax Museum of Witches & Seafarers and the Salem Witch Village) The Salem Wax Mu sum is composed of eerily life-like London made wax figures that depict Salem s vivid history from its founding in 1626 through the terrifying Hysteria of Come face to face with such notable Salem figures as the famed author of the Scarlet Letter and The House of the Seven Gables Nathaniel Hawthorne, the pirates of New England, the merciless witch Trials judge Colonel John Hawthorne, and Tituba the accused witch who helped fuel the hysteria of 1692 just to name a few! BRADY SCHOLARSHIP The Association of Government Accountants (AGA) - Boston Chapter is pleased to offer one (1) George E. Brady Memorial Scholarship of $1,000 to an AGA Boston Chapter member or an immediate family member that is enrolled in an institution of higher education with no limitation as to educational major. Background: The late George E. Brady was a member of AGA from 1957 until He served as the Boston Chapter President of AGA ( ). George graduated from Bentley College in 1933 and went to work for United Fruit as an accountant. In 1941 he joined the federal government as an accountant. In 1954 George applied for his CPA license where he had to demonstrate that he had the requisite two years of public accounting experience. At that time, government service was not automatically accepted as public accounting experience. George met with the licensing board and successfully demonstrated that his 13 years of government service had exposed him to the same experiences encountered by public accountants. As a result of his tenacity, the board granted him his CPA license. He was the first person to have government service recognized as public accounting experience by the licensing board. George retired in June 1973 as Chief of the Boston Branch Office, Contract Audit Division, Auditor General, USAF after 31 years of government service. Eligibility: Applicant must be an AGA Boston Chapter member or an immediate family member (spouse or dependent child). Applicant must be enrolled or accepted/applied into an institution of higher education with no limitation as to educational major. Award Criteria: Recipients will be selected based on scholastic achievement, leadership qualities, extracurricular activities, reference letter, and writing ability. FY 2014 WALTER FRESE SCHOLARSHIP The Association of Government Accountants (AGA) - Boston Chapter is pleased to offer one (1) Walter Frese Memorial Scholarship of $1,000 to a high school, undergraduate, or graduate student enrolled in a financial management related program. Background: The late Walter Frese was one of the original 59 Charter Members and one of the original nine Directors to serve on the National Board of the Association of Government Accountants (AGA). Mr. Frese was the second National President of the organization, serving from 1951 to The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) paid special recognition to Walter in its 100 th Anniversary issue of the Journal of Accountancy. Mr. Frese s career included the United States Department of the Treasury, the United States General Accounting Office, and the Harvard School of Business. Eligibility: Applicants must be enrolled or accepted/applied into a program relating to financial management, as an undergraduate/graduate student. This will include (but not limited to) majors in accounting, business administration, finance, information technology, and economics. Note: Applicants must be a New England resident or be enrolled in a New England college. Award Criteria: Recipients will be selected based on scholastic achievement, leadership qualities, extracurricular activities, reference letter, writing ability, and an expressed interest in the field of government accounting, auditing or financial management. Citizen Centric Reporting The Association of Government Accountants, the thought leader for the government accountability profession, evaluates reports for the Certificate of Excellence in Citizen-Centric Reporting award. She is also town treasurer for Roxbury! The Hartford Chapter Meetings are generally held at 6:00 p.m. on the third Wednesday of each month from September to May. Hartford Chapter at Aroostook County Chapter Chapter CEC Meetings are scheduled for the 2nd Thursday of each month. General Membership Meetings are held as needed. The Christopher Home community service project is an on-going monthly project that AGA Aroostook County has participated over the past several months. If you are interested in getting involved in this project or other Community Service project please contact their Community Service Director. Maine Chapter Meetings Monthly meetings are held September through May of each year, and alternate between breakfast and luncheon times. Each meeting features a keynote speaker discussing events or programs currently impacting government and the state as a whole. Throughout the year, Maine AGA members perform several community service events, providing support to local children, veterans and homeless citizens. Maine Chapter at Page 13
