1 Stockbridge High School Scholarships/Financial Aid Information Students and parents are encouraged to review all scholarship opportunities listed inside of the counseling office frequently as well as visit the College and Career Center located in the Media Center. We strongly recommend students drop in regularly as well as read the senior newsletter to keep up to date on the scholarship and financial aid opportunities available to them. Note: Double check ALL information in our school computer system---especially the social security number. It MUST be correct for colleges and HOPE to get the proper information!!! Hope Scholarship Changes Recent news about changes to the state-funded HOPE Scholarship Program may have some families unsure of the best way to prepare for college. Too often, students cross their fingers and hope they re ready for college and are eligible for HOPE. Students need to get the facts about the HOPE changes and know whether they re affected, but, more importantly, they need to make sure they re making good academic choices now so that they can keep the scholarship once they get it. GAcollege411.org is a comprehensive site that explains the college process from start to finish and is highly recommended. Below you will find links to federal financial aid information, government resources, large scholarship search engines, military programs, and how to plan for education costs at any age. Scholarships AES Engineering Scholarships: Scholarships are intended for our future leaders across a wide spectrum of fields of study and are awarded based on character, personal merit and commitment. Merit is demonstrated through leadership in school, civic and extracurricular activities, academic achievement, and motivation to serve and succeed. Students must submit an essay of no more than 500 words explaining how they are fulfilling the criteria mentioned above. Submit essay to: scholarships@aesengineers.com. Application deadline is September 1, 2006.

2 American Cancer Society College Scholarship: First year recipients may receive $1,000 and college scholarship renewals may be awarded in the amount of $500 with a maximum scholarship amount to one student of $2,500. To receive an application please call ACS-2345, SA.College@cancer.org. Go to for more information. Eligible student will attend an accredited two or four year college and is the survivor of childhood cancer. Must be a legal resident of GA, DE, MD, NC, SC, WV or VA. Application deadline is April 15, American Fire Sprinkler Association: This scholarship contest is open to high school seniors in the United States who plan to further their education at a college/university or certified trade school in the United States. You must be a high school senior during the school year who will attend a college/university or trade school in the United States starting with the fall 2007 semester. Application deadline is April 12, Army Scholar Athlete: Scholar athletes are selected by their high school administrators. The Army Reserve sends and official selection form to the school counselor. The counselor is encouraged to consult with the principal and athletic director to select students who will receive this award. Official selection forms must be postmarked by May 30. American Society of Military Comptrollers: This scholarship program recognizes high school seniors for academic achievement to provide financial assistance to seniors in order that they may accomplish their future financial management baccalaureate educational goals, and to increase local ASMC chapter scholarship programs. Applications are available online at Deadline is March 31, Arrid Total Women of Tomorrow Scholarship: This is an online scholarship for young women, being either a junior or senior. You can apply online at and you must write an essay of 500 or less words. See website for details. Application deadline is April 30, Art Institute Best Teen Chef Culinary Scholarship Competition: Must be a graduating high school senior; Must have a minimum GPA 2.0; Must submit an application to the Art Institute where there is a culinary arts program. Applicants must complete an entry form, high school transcript, a paragraph on why you would like to be a culinary professional, and identify who inspires you and why, and a notebook including: a menu w/ descriptions for a two course meal, and a detailed recipe. Application deadline is February 11, Association of Fundraising Professionals will host National Philanthropy Day at the Georgia World Congress Center on November 9, The theme of the event is Change the World with a Giving Heart.

3 The goal of the contest is to encourage young people to consider the importance of philanthropy in their own lives and the impact of philanthropy on communities in which they live. The application can be found at The deadline for entries is Friday, September 15, Atlanta Braves High School Scholarship Program: Must be a graduating senior in the state of Georgia; Minimum GPA 3.5; Must be accepted to an accredited college or university. Applicants should submit a completed application, an acceptance letter to a college or university, one letter of recommendation, and an essay. Application deadline is May 31, Atlanta Jamaican Association (AJA): Each candidate is required to submit an application as well as an essay on a selected topic of relevance to Jamaica. Essays will be scored by an independent panel of judges, which includes college professors and high school educators in the Atlanta Metropolitan area. Subsequently, those essays receiving the most meritorious scores will be invited to a face-to-face interview with members of AJA Educational Committee. The application, agreement, transcript, and essay should be mailed no later than April 30, Atlanta Southern Crescent Alumnae Panhellenic Association Scholarship: Must be a female high school student and resident of the Southern Crescent area of Atlanta who will attend an accredited fouryear college in the fall of the forthcoming year. Southern Crescent is defined as the counties of Clayton, Fayette, Coweta, Henry, Spalding, and the cities of South Fulton County. Applicants must submit an application along with attachments specified on the application. Application deadline is April 15, Burger King Scholars: This program awards $1000 scholarships to graduating high school seniors planning on furthering their education at a college or post secondary vocational/technical school. Eligibility: Must have a GPA 2.5 or higher; Must work part-time an average of 15 hours per week, 40 weeks per year; Demonstrate participation in community service and/or co-curricular activities; Demonstrate financial need; Receive recommendation; Plan to enroll in an accredited two or four year college, university, or vocational/technical school by Fall Applications can be downloaded at Application deadline is December 15, Business Community Scholarship: This scholarship award will be awarded to a graduating senior planning to pursue an associate or bachelor s degree in a business-related field at a technical school, college, or university in Georgia. Eligibility Must be in good academic standing; Must have completed at least three vocational classes; Must have been in attendance at SHS the first day of this school year. A completed application along with a copy of your official high school transcript is required for this scholarship.

City of Stockbridge: This scholarship award will be awarded to a graduating senior planning to pursue an associate or bachelor s degree in a business-related field at a technical school, college, or university in Georgia. Eligibility Must be in good academic standing; Must have completed at least three vocational classes; Must have been in attendance at SHS the first day of this school year; Must live in the city of Stockbridge. A completed application, adequate proof of residency, along with a copy of your official high school transcript is required for this scholarship. Columbus State University has a variety of scholarships with wide range of awards, requirements and deadlines. Additional information is available at Coca Cola Scholars Program: This scholarship will be awarded to current high school or home-school seniors anticipating graduation from a school or program in the United States during the academic year in which application is made; Must be a U.S. Citizen; U.S. National; U.S. Permanent Resident; Temporary Resident (legalization program); Refugee; Asylee; Cuban-Haitian Entrant; or Humanitarian Parolee planning to pursue a degree at an accredited U.S. post-secondary institution; Must have a minimum 3.00 GPA at the end of your junior year of high school. High school seniors, who have not yet graduated, must submit initial applications between September and October 31 of his/her senior year in high school. Applications are available online at Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta, Inc: Each scholarship has its own specific purpose and eligibility criteria. Scholarships are managed with varying degrees of involvement by the Foundation's Education Advisory Committee and staff. Scholarships allow donors to invest in the future by helping deserving students pursue higher education. Congressional Black Caucus Spouses Scholarship: This program was established in response to federal cuts in spending for education programs and scholarships. All applications are available at Eligibility requirements: Must be a high senior who intend to pursue an undergraduate degree full-time or current full-time student in good academic standing at an accredited college or university; Must have a minimum GPA of 2.5; Exhibit leadership ability and participate in community service activites; Must reside in or attend a college/university in a congressional district represented by a CBC member. Application deadline is May 1 of each calendar year. DeVry University $10 Million Scholarship Program: This program includes a Presidential, 2 full-tuition awards valued at over $64,000 each, Dean's, valued up to $13,500 ($1,500 per term) merit scholarships, and Community Scholar Awards at $1,000 per term scholarships for each deserving student. Duck Brand Duct Tape Stuck at Prom Scholarship contest will award one high school couple with $6000. Additional information is available online at Elks Foundation Most Valuable Student Scholarship: Applications for the Elks National Foundation's 2007 Most Valuable Student contest will be available beginning September 1, 2006 at your local Elks Lodge, online or by sending a self-addressed, stamped envelope to the Foundation. Applications for the 2007 contest have to be submitted to your local Elks Lodge by January 12, Additional scholarship information can be downloaded at Empowered to Cultivate Scholarship: Must be African American female currently residing in the state of Georgia; Be an 11 th grade student, who will be a 12 th grade student in ; Be enrolled or planning to enrolling a full undergraduate course of study at an accredited two or four year college, university, or vocational-technical school for the fall semester 2006; Have a GPA of at least 2.5 or higher. Interested students must complete an application, essay, and mail along with an official high school transcript. ERCA Community Contribution Scholarship: This scholarship recognizes and rewards students who have made an extraordinary contribution to their community and/or high school. Must be a high school student planning on continuing his/or her education. All completed applications must be postmarked no later than June 17 of the current school year. For additional information on this scholarship you may visit their website at Fortson Foundation Agricultural Studies Scholarship: Must be a Henry County senior who will be attending a university, college or technical institute. Must study in the area of agriculture-related studies: agricultural science, veterinary medicine, animal husbandry, forestry, forest products, conservation, animal ecology, fisheries, wildlife biology, or wildlife science. Applications must complete an application, essay,

6 reference, official high school transcript, copy of postsecondary acceptance letter, and copy of current school, community, and work activities. Awards are based on merit, not financial need. Application deadline is April 15, Furman College: Wylie Scholarships in Mathematics are awarded to incoming freshmen that have demonstrated outstanding mathematical ability and an interest in pursuing the study of mathematics in college. These scholarships, which are worth up to $7,500 per year, are renewable based on completion of specific academic requirements and on participation in Furman's mathematics program. To be eligible for a Wylie Scholarship, a student must have a combined SAT score of at least 1350 or an ACT score of at least 31. For more information visit their website at Gates Millennium Scholars: The Gates Millennium Scholars (GMS), funded by a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, was established in 1999 to provide outstanding African American, American Indian/Alaska Natives, Asian Pacific Islander Americans, and Hispanic American students with an opportunity to complete an undergraduate college education, in all discipline areas and a graduate education for those students pursuing studies in mathematics, science, engineering, education, or library science. Application deadline is January 13, Please visit their website at Georgia Development Authority Scholarship: This scholarship is in the amount of $1250 awarded annually to a Georgia rural student enrolled in the study of agriculture or an agriculture related field. Consideration for the scholarship will be based 80% on financial need. Each application must be accompanied by three letters of recommendation, handwritten essay, high school transcript, SAT scores, and all other financial aid received. Application deadline is June 1, Georgia Engineering Foundation: Must be a senior and US citizen enrolled in an engineering program in college. For applications go to: Application deadline is August 31, Georgia Federal Credit Union Scholarship: In keeping with their commitment to the community, they serve and help qualified members with their college expenses. Scholarship applications can be obtained from any Georgia Federal Credit Union Office, or by calling GFCU s Public Relations Department at (770) , ext The application deadline is March 1, Georgia Fire Sprinkler Association: The topic for the essay contest is - "Explain to your builder the value of sprinklers and why you want them installed." Additional information about this scholarship opportunity is available at Georgia Mining Foundation Scholarship: Must be accepted for admission and plan to attend and accredited college or university in the state of Georgia; Must have a SAT of 900; Must have a cumulative average of 85% or higher; Must have completed high school courses. Applicants should submit a

7 completed application along with: a faculty recommendation, essay, evidence of financial need, and an official high school transcript. Application deadline is February 28, Georgia Perimeter College: A myriad of scholarships are available to students in specific areas of study such as Mathematics, Engineering, Business Administration, Fine Arts, Athletics, Education, Nursing and more. Georgia Perimeter College Foundation Nursing Scholarships: Contact the GPC Department of Nursing at GPC Clarkston Campus 555 North Indian Creek Dr. Clarkston, GA (Nursing Advisement Office). Georgia Scholar Program: This is an effort by the Georgia Department of Education to identify and recognize high school seniors who have achieved excellence in school and community life. Georgia Southern University Scholarships: Completion of the scholarship application is necessary in order to be considered for all scholarships. You must indicate the correct scholarships on your application. Application deadline is February 1 for the following academic year. You can download an application at Georgia State University offers three scholarships for outstanding students. One is provided by the Goizueta Foundation Scholars Fund and is designed particularly for students from a Hispanic/Latino background or students who have participated actively in the Hispanic/Latino community. Another is provided by the Berner Foundation and is designed particularly to attract outstanding students from high schools in more rural areas of Georgia. The final scholarship is the Presidential Scholarship. The application is available in the counseling office but is also available on the website gsu.edu/scholarships gsu.html. Gordon Foundation Scholarship: Eligibility is based on overall high school performance and standardized testing. Applicants must complete the entire application process for Gordon College. Fill out the Foundation Scholarship application completely. Application deadline is April 1. Great Clips Cosmetology School Scholarship: Atlanta franchises and Great Clips, Inc. are sponsoring six $500 scholarships for individuals interested in pursuing a career in cosmetology or barbering. These scholarships can be used at any accredited cosmetology or barbering school in the counties of Forsyth, Barrow, Bartow, Butts, Carroll, Cherokee, Clayton, Cobb, Coweta, DeKalb, Douglas, Fayette, Floyd,

8 Fulton, Gwinnett, Hall, Haralson, Henry, Jackson, Jasper, Newton, Paulding, Polk, Rockdale, and Walton in Georgia. Please return a completed application along with a letter of recommendation no later than May 31, Hispanic Scholarship Fund: Hispanic Americans. Horatio Alger Scholarship Application: This scholarship opportunity seeks to assist students who have demonstrated integrity, perseverance in overcoming adversity, strength of character, financial need, a good academic record, commitment to pursue a college education, and a desire to contribute to society. Selected students must exhibit dependability, trustworthiness, loyalty, punctuality and leadership. Award amount vary from $250- $1000. Nisei Student Relocation Commemorative Fund (Scholarship): This scholarship opportunity is for Cambodian, Hmong, Laotian, Vietnamese students. Application deadline is January 31, North Georgia College & State University - Military Scholarship Program: 39 scholarships will be awarded to students to pay for tuition, books, fees, room, and board and provide monthly pay and stipends. 9 Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Phi Kappa Kappa Chapter Annual Scholarship: PKK is committed in awarding scholarships to outstanding students who have demonstrated an interest in attending college after high school. Applications are available in the Counseling Office. Application deadline is March 31, Outstanding Students of America: Must be a current senior with a minimum GPA of 3.0. Must be active in community service and school activities. Outstanding Students of America is seeking a well rounded, intelligent student as a recipient. Peach State Louis Stokes Alliance Minority Participation Scholars Program: The goal of the program is to increase the number of underrepresented minority students statewide who complete undergraduate degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The program is conducted through Georgia Perimeter College and is offered as a five-week summer program. Go to for more information. There is also a program offered for students who have been admitted and are (or will be) enrolled as a full-time student at Bainbridge College, Fort Valley State University, Georgia Perimeter College, Savannah State University, Southern Polytechnic University, University of Georgia. Presbyterian College: An additional $3,000 if you qualify for the HOPE Scholarship in Georgia, file the FAFSA and maintain satisfactory academic status at Presbyterian College. Byrd Honors Scholarship Program: This is a $1500 award renewable for up to three additional years that will be made contingent upon receipt of a federal grant equal to the number of graduating seniors or equivalents in each congressional district. Ron Brown Scholarship Program: This program seeks to identify African-American high school seniors who will make significant contributions to society. The Ron Brown Scholar Program currently has two deadlines for applications (students must be current high school seniors at the time of their application): November 1 and January 9. 10 Rusty Stalnaker Scholarship: Each year a scholarship is awarded to a deserving senior in memory of Rusty Stalnaker. Rusty was an Atlanta police office that was killed in the line of duty. He was a graduate of Stockbridge High School where he served as a class officer. This scholarship will be awarded to a student who plans to pursue a career in some form of law enforcement. SAE Engineering Scholarship Program: This scholarship is in recognition of the important contributions made by engineers in improving the quality of our lives. Eligibility requirements: Must be a graduating senior at the date of application (Sept 1-Dec1), Intend to earn a degree in engineering or a related science; Be a citizen of the United States at the time of application; Meet the minimum requirements with regard to the grade point average, SAT I Reasoning Test and/or ACT scores as outlined in the individual requirements of each scholarship. Application deadline: December 1, Sam Floyd Scholarship: This scholarship is given to an outstanding senior who plans to pursue studies in math or a math related field. Siemens Foundation: The Siemens Competition promotes excellence by encouraging students to undertake individual or team research projects in science, mathematics, engineering and technology or in combinations of these disciplines. The competition provides you an opportunity to meet other students who share your interest in research, talk with distinguished scientists and, of course, win a scholarship for college. Every individual entering a Research Project in the Competition must register online before the deadline of October 2, 2006, 5:00 p.m. ET. Additional information is available online at Soul Changers Recovery Program, Inc.: Must be a graduating senior; Must be a resident of Henry County; Must have a minimum GPA 3.0. Applicants must submit a final high school transcript, essay, completed application, and an acceptance letter from a post secondary institution. Application deadline is June 16, Stamps Bethel Memorial Scholarship (Alpha Psi Iota Delta of Chi): Applicants must exemplify the ideals of the fraternity intellectually, morally, and socially. Semifinalists will be required to attend an interview at a time and place to be announced. This scholarship is offered to incoming freshmen men at Georgia Tech. Membership in the fraternity is not required. A completed application is due no later than May 15, 2005 along with an official high school transcript. Applicants need not be members of Theta Chi or any other fraternity nor is there any commitment after applying for or receiving

The Watson Brown Foundation Inc.: The primary mission of the foundation is to offer $3,000-5,000 renewable scholarships to students in the Southeast based on merit and need. The Walton Family Foundation and Wal-Mart Foundation help provide these opportunities through various education initiatives such as the scholarship programs. Wendy s High School Heisman: This program is an excellent opportunity to recognize and encourage the young people who are really making a difference in the classroom, on the field and in the community. Young Harris College Goizueta Foundation Scholarship Fund: Through the generosity of The Goizueta Foundation, Young Harris College has three full (room, board, tuition) scholarships available for Hispanic/Latino students. The selection is based on high school grades, SAT/ACT scores, and need. Send all information to YHC. Other Programs Girls Night Out at Georgia Tech: This is an overnight visitation program for exceptional women in 10 th and 11 th grade (prior to May 1, 2006) who are interested in learning about opportunities at Georgia Tech. Debutante Program: Applicants must be a young lady in the Class of 2007 or All parts of the application must be postmarked by April 26, Applications are available in the Counseling Office Miss Georgia Teen USA Pageant: This year s pageant will be held in Newnan, Georgia on November 9-11, Entrants must be single, never married nor have given birth to a child, a U.S. citizen, and at least a six month resident of Georgia. You must also be at least 15 years of age and under 19 years of age to qualify. Additional information about this pageant is available at United States Senate Youth Program: Each local system is invited to select one nominee. The purpose of this program is to broaden the knowledge and understanding of high school students about Congress and the legislative process. The program includes a trip to Washington, D.C. W.E.B Du Bois Society: This is an academic enrichment program consisting of lecture series, field trips, and mentoring for high achieving African American high school students. The Du Bois Society meets at the Auburn Avenue Research Library on African American Culture and History, 101 Auburn Avenue in downtown Atlanta. The lecture series is held on the campuses of area colleges and universities of their volunteer faculty. The Du Bois Society seeks students attending area high schools in the 9 th -12 th grades with a GPA of 3.2 who can benefit from a unique leadership development program. Applicants are encouraged to submit a completed application early. Admission is selective and competitive. Tuition is
