2 Greetings to all you great Rotarians in District 6740! I hope this finds you and your Club are continuing to have a wonderful year doing great Rotary work! Please take a few minutes to read the March newsletter. I think you will enjoy reading about all of the Club and District news and events. March is Rotary Water and Sanitation Month. The Rotary Foundation is changing the world by providing grants for projects and activities around the globe and in your own backyard: Strengthen the ability of communities to develop, fund, and maintain sustainable water and sanitation systems. Provide equitable community access to safe water, improved sanitation, and hygiene. Support programs that enhance communities awareness of the benefits of safe water, sanitation, and hygiene. Support career-minded professionals studies related to water and sanitation. Create tools and resources that facilitate, measure, and enhance high-quality water and sanitation projects worldwide. To date: 23 million people now have safe water due to Rotary 21 million people have access to sanitation and hygiene thanks to Rotary projects $24 is all it takes to provide 1 person with safe water 2030 is the year Rotary hopes to finish providing everyone with safe water, sanitation, and hygiene. Remember, when you support the Foundation, you are supporting these great projects, even one in our own backyard Clay County. Plan now to attend the District Conference on June 8 and 9, at Shaker Village in Harrodsburg. There are lots of fun activities, like a Whodunnit Yours in Rotary Service, District Governor

7 Here s YOUR Chance to Win a Greenbrier Getaway District 6740 Raffle As you may remember, I spoke during my club visit about a District raffle that will raise money for the Foundation. I am excited to announce that I have completed the plans for the raffle and am preparing to get the raffle tickets to you! Each club will receive tickets to sell - I have based the number of tickets your club receives on the size of your club. Any Rotarian buying a raffle ticket will receive credit for a Foundation donation and your club will receive credit as well. Of course, non-rotarians are eligible to purchase a raffle ticket, too. The winner will receive a Greenbrier Getaway, valued at $3000! You will enjoy 3 days and 2 nights at the luxurious Greenbrier Hotel in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. All meals, golf at the Old White Course and a spa package is also included in your prize. Tickets are $50 each there are ONLY 500 tickets available! The drawing for the trip will be held at the District Conference at Shaker Village on Saturday, June 9, DG Cheryl

26 ROTARY LARGE CLUB CONFERENCE, LITTLE ROCK, JANUARY Each year, since 1959, executive directors and the president-elect of large clubs come together to network and share ideas. The conference rotates annually to cities in North America that have clubs with a minimum of 300 or more members and full-time staff. The conference was started by the Association of Large Club Executive Directors (ARCED) to meet with peers for the purpose of development, motivation and exchange ideas. The President-elect has to opportunity to work with the executive director to begin setting their club goals. This year Executive Director Peggy Trafton and President-elect Sharon Reed attended the annual meeting in Little Rock, Arkansas, where there were workshops on different personality types and how to better communicate with those that have a different way to achieve shared goals. Keeping in mind these personality types, they looked at growing membership, Rotary branding and effective leadership. Little Rock has a rich history from the desegregation of Little Rock Central High School to the Clinton Presidential Library. They toured Central High School and heard a very powerful presentation by Elizabeth Eckford, one of the Little Rock Nine (pictured below). This was a Martin Luther King Day that they will always remember! They were treated to dinner in the Clinton Presidential Library, The Museum of Discovery and Heifer Headquarters. They enjoyed spending quality time together, were inspired and managed to have a lot of fun, too!

27 Betty Cutts of the Morehead Rotary Club made apple dumplings with her granddaughter Ellie Cutts in February for the 113th birthday of Rotary. We used the recipe from the Rotary book "The Apple Dumpling Adventure" that teaches the Four-Way Test. The ipad interactive story was so interesting to Ellie that she read it four or five times and enjoyed the movie showing how to cook Apple Dumplings. There was also a puzzle, ending test, and games that went with the interactive book. The best thing was that we really made Apple Dumplings like the movie showed. The book asked the four questions: Is it true? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill and friendships? Is it beneficial to all concerned? We certainly could answer the last question. Those dumplings were beneficial to all concerned!

29 Charter Sought to Establish an Interact Club at Frederick Douglass High School For the second time in under a year, the Lexington Rotary Club is proud to announce the organization of an Interact Club. The first Interact Club was established at STEAM Academy where Rotarian Gerry van der Meer has been working with the sponsors and students to get the club off the ground and grow membership this school year. According to Lexington Rotary Club s Interact Committee chairman John Zink, our second Interact Club in Fayette County is being created at the new Frederick Douglass High School on the east side of Lexington. Douglass French instructor Sydney Meaux, the faculty sponsor, has been working with both John and Jeanne Clark (who will be working with the club on a regular basis) on the chartering procedures for the club. On February 26, John and Jeanne met with Miss Meaux and the students who will serve as the first officers and board members for the club. At that time, the club s constitution and by-laws were established and voted on. The students participated in a preliminary orientation which included information about Rotary International, the Lexington club, and the mission of Interact. The students were congratulated for taking their first step toward what will hopefully become a lifetime of service above self.

30 ROTARY YOUTH EXCHANGE By District Chair B.J. McClure Rotary District 6740 will be sending nine (9) - yes, I said NINE high school students from the state of Kentucky out into the world this summer and during the next academic year. They will be living in France, Spain, Peru, Poland, Germany, even Thailand. Exciting! However, our Youth Exchange program is just that - an exchange. In return, we need to host four (4) international students, and show them our southern hospitality - and why we are proud to call Kentucky home. We are actively seeking host families for the academic year. Expectations for the host family are the following: Care for the student for 3-5 months Make sure the student gets to and from school daily (bus is OK) Provide the student 3 meals per day Treat the student like you would treat your own child The host parent DOES NOT need to be a Rotarian One of our 4 students will be a female from Finland. The other student profiles are not yet ready, but I will let you know once they become available. Expectations for the host Rotary Club are the following: Provide the student a $100 stipend for up to 10 months ($1, total) Provide the student with a Counselor who will check in on the student each month Invite the student to Rotary Club meetings and events Support the host family by offering to share a little bit of Kentucky with student: Cultural events, Sporting events, Invite them to dinner in your home, Local attractions Please contact James Glass (jglass@setel.com) or myself if you are interested in becoming a host family.
