1 District 5750 News January 2013 District Governor s Letter DISTRICT GOVERNOR Will Beckman 3633 Valley Creek Road Edmond, OK (H) (C) pete7374@aol.com DISTRICT GOVERNOR-ELECT Art Bode a-bode@cox.net DISTRICT GOVERNOR-NOMINEE Michelle Schaefer michelle@ michelleschaefer.com DISTRICT TREASURER David Greenwell dgreenwell@ coleandreed.com DISTRICT SECRETARY DISTRICT 5750 OFFICE DISTRICT WEBSITE & NEWSLETTER Megan Elliott melliott@accelfinancial.com DISTRICT 5750 WEBITE ROTARY INTERATIONAL PRESIDENT Sakuji Tanaka Greetings, Wow! How time flies. As we turn the corner on this second half of the Rotary year I am truly in awe as to what great Rotarians we have in our district. We now have been active in at least five of the seven continents and crazy active right here in our district. I do not know of a single club that is not doing great things for their club, their community, and the state. Hardly a day goes by that I do not hear of another project being discussed for this or next year! Keep up the great work! Earlier this month it was an honor to participate in the West Oklahoma City Hal W. Almen Scholarship presentation where 22 scholarships, $4, each, were awarded to outstanding students throughout our state. This annual award shows just how Rotary will continue changing lives for future generations. That is one reason we discussed individual clubs setting up their own Rotary Trust in addition to the Rotary International Foundation. With that said, I am happy to report that we are closing in on my goal of over 200 new Paul Harris Fellows in our District! The Oklahoma City Rotary Club will have over 125 by themselves! Amazing! We change lives by our actions and our giving! Thank you for doing both! I truly believe that Rotary is probably the best organization in the world that cares not about politics but for the world s well being regardless of race, color, or creed! We have seen some amazing things happen throughout the district and the world! God Bless you all! Keep up your efforts! In service, I am, Will Beckman Governor District 5750
2 January 2013 Page 2 Wings of Rotary DISTRICT NEWS Looking for up to eight great students to represent District 5750 in our annual Wings of Rotary Exchange. Your help at the club level is appreciated. How about a RYLA Student this past summer that impressed you and your club or an Interact Student in your community? What a great gift from a parent or grandparent during this Holiday Season! Wings of Rotary applications can be found on our district website under Committees Wings of Rotary Wings Application. Applications are due January 31, 2013 so don t wait! Contact our 2013 Wings of Rotary Team Leader Danna Szymanski at dannasart@yahoo.com / (405) or Wings of Rotary Committee Chair at kjohnson@myqualitywater.com / (580) PETS 2013 PETS 2013 is just around the corner! As a reminder, all Presidents for are required to attend PETS and we highly encourage Presidents to attend as well. Training is free for both. February 28 - March 2, 2013 Oklahoma State University, ConocoPhillips Alumni Center SCHEDULE OF EVENTS PETS REGISTRATION (Available Soon) HOTEL ACCOMODATIONS Rotary Foundation Grant Certification Seminar DGE Art Bode has put together a special session on Grants Management in conjunction with the Presidents Elect Training. Grants Management Training is required as part of the Certification Process for Rotary Clubs in District 5750 that want to participate in ANY Rotary Foundation Grant District Grant or Global Grant. District Grants are much like the District Simplified Grant, but more flexible. Global Grants are like Matching Grants, but bigger and more elaborate in scope and life cycle. Unlike the current grant system where The Foundation handles processing and funds disbursal, the new Grant Model makes Clubs and the District responsible for almost all aspects of the grant, from planning to oversight to completion. Hence, the need to specific and detailed training of everyone involved in the Grant Process. In order to be certified as eligible to participate in Grants, a Club MUST have TWO members attend an official Grants Management Seminar. The first Seminar will be held on Saturday morning, March 2, The Seminar will last ½ day and be completed by noon. Register online here. *Presidents-Elect, this is included in your PETS Registration.
3 January 2013 Page 3 Bi-District Foundation Banquet Please join districts 5750 & 5770 for the sixteenth annual Bi-District Foundation Banquet! We have two very special guests attending, R.I. President Sakuji Tanaka and R.I. Presidentelect, Ron Burton. What a great opportunity to celebrate The Rotary Foundation! Friday Evening, February 8th, 2013 Cash Bar-6:00 p.m. Dinner-7:00 p.m. Black Tie Optional NCED Conference Center & Hotel, 2801 State Hway 9, Norman, OK Cost is $50 for Sustaining Rotarians and Guests, $150 for Non-Sustaining Rotarians Click here for a link to the Bi-District Banquet Registration Form. You can download the form for printing. Fill it out and mail it in with your payment. Click on this link to register online: 2013 Bi-District Online Registration. Please note if you complete your registration online, you will not have the option of selecting a District 5750 club from their dropdown menu. Just select that you are a Rotarian in District Guatemala Water Project Update Dear David, I wanted to take a minute to update you on our work in Guatemala and what we've been able to accomplish with the financial assistance District 5750 provided. Since I last visited with you we have fully completed the two projects we were working on and submitted the evaluation to the Foundation which was approved. However, we had monies left over and I contacted the Foundation requesting we be allowed to spend these funds to develop a new water source for the community of San Juan Maza. We did not have sufficient funds to complete the project, but did have enough to develop the capture system at the spring and begin construction of the pipeline. (the water source is over 5 miles from the community) Amazingly, I received Foundation approval for this project within two days of submission of the request, and after several months of inactivity by our host club we were able to move forward. This project has now been completed to the extent the budget would allow, and I will be going back to Guatemala the last week in February to complete the final evaluation. Due to the generous gift from your District we did not have to expend all the funds we had originally raised and these were kept in a separate International Projects account. We are now using these funds as "seed" money to extend our work and will be applying for a global grant in the spring. Working in partnership with Engineers Without Borders, the Knights of Columbus, other Rotary clubs in Montana, and Rotary District 5390, I'm confident we will raise sufficient funds to qualify for a $15,000 global grant and a $40,000 project. We intend to complete the work at San Juan Maza as well as re-build a water system for a junior/senior high school. I just wanted you to understand the far-reaching impact the generosity of your district has had on the people of Guatemala. If you ever see any of the former District executives responsible for sharing your DDF funds with us please let them know your gift has positively impacted several thousand people and is continuing to make a difference in the lives of these needy people. Your friend in Rotary, George
