Eight Simplified Grants Awarded! The response to our district s first-time participation in the District Simplified Grants program was strong. We received eight applications from Clubs to help finance projects both here and overseas. Five of the projects met the criteria set out by DG John Carkner and were approved for the full amount of the grant request. This left $750 in the DSG budget ($5,000), which the committee members divided between the three other Clubs that applied. The main criteria for the grant was a focus on literacy. All eight projects were related to education and literacy; the first five projects had a stronger focus on literacy. The following Clubs will receive grants when their projects are completed: RC Campbellton $1,000 LBS Love of Literacy Program RC Caribou $1000 Three Cups of Tea Literacy Project RC Presque Isle $250 Rotary Reading Week RC Rothesay-Kings $1000 Books, school supplies and bicycles to the DR RC Saint John $1000 Literacy/Reading Centre, Jamaica School RC Moncton $275 Mechanical Cow, Swaziland School RC Oromocto $200 Heritage Fair (Essay Presentations) RC Port Elgin $275 Walking Trail for Primary School We hope to expand the DSG program for the next Rotary year, and welcome your comments and suggestions about how the program can work better for your Clubs. Visit the Dominican Republic! Rotarians are invited to travel to the Dominican Republic in February 2011 for some hands-on volunteer experience and Rotary fellowship. Please contact Rtn. 2 Project Update District Project Our goal is to raise $25,000 from Clubs to fund this year s District Project a water project which will provide biosand filters to households in the Dominican Republic. We are almost there! We have currently raised $21,350! If your Club has not already committed funds to this project, please advise the project leader, Dr. Bob Chagrasulis, of your Club s plans immediately: bobchagrasulis@aol.com Grand Manan 2011 Calendars Available! The Rotary Club of Grand Manan is heavily involved in supporting and helping to manage The Noreen & Ryan Home in Dominghia, Guinea. The Home is a centre for victims of post-polio syndrome, as well as a clinic for the local villages. One of the services provided there is the distribution of vitamin supplements, which has a significant impact on the health of local residents. Included in this newsletter you will find a poster advertising the sale of calendars which contain photos showing the development of the Home over the last year. These are made available by the Grand Manan Club as a fundraiser. See page 6 for details, and consult future newsletters for more information about The Noreen & Ryan Home and its current projects. Update Afghanistan School Have you signed up? Have you signed up yet to be a Rotary speaker for the school in Afghanistan? All you have to do is order a Speaker Kit from the web site ( and book an assembly at your local high school. Once you re there, introduce the DVD provided, and then thank the students when it s over. That s all there is to it! Help your community learn about this wonderful Rotary project, and get local students involved in learning about their peers in Afghanistan. See pages 4-5 for more information. 2

This project was spearheaded by members of the Rotary Club of Louis Trichardt, who recently sent us photos showing the progress of the project. We include a few of those photos here. A total of 24 Clubs in our district contributed $37,500 toward this project. We can all be proud of the difference this project will make to the lives of hundreds of school children in the Louis Trichardt area of the Limpopo province. Not only does it provide a source of clean water for drinking and making lunches, it allows the students to practice better hygiene and protect themselves from illness, so they can attend school on a regular basis. As a Rotary Speaker, you can help us challenge Canadian Youth in your community to learn more about rebuilding efforts in Afghanistan, the new school project, and the 100th anniversary of Rotary in

5 The school is open! Local elders participated and celebrated the opening day with Canadian Rotarian representatives. Before the school was built and during construction children attended classes outside. They had been exposed to hot and cold weather and during the most inclement days, school was cancelled. The children say they found it hard to concentrate and often illness would spread through the student population. A look inside one of the newly furnished classrooms.
