1 District 5750 News November 2013 District Governor s Letter DISTRICT GOVERNOR Art Bode Tuscany Dr. Harrah, OK (C) a-bode@cox.net DISTRICT GOVERNOR-ELECT Michelle Schaefer michelle@ michelleschaefer.com DISTRICT GOVERNOR-NOMINEE Lance Phillips lancebp2000@yahoo.com DISTRICT TREASURER David Greenwell dgreenwell@ coleandreed.com DISTRICT SECRETARY DISTRICT 5750 OFFICE DISTRICT WEBSITE & NEWSLETTER Megan Elliott melliott@accelfinancial.com DISTRICT 5750 WEBITE ROTARY INTERATIONAL PRESIDENT Ron Burton Oklahoma, U.S.A. Greetings once again fellow Rotarians! November is the month we celebrate and showcase the Rotary Foundation. The foundation makes possible so much of what we do around the world through your generous contributions. Your donations to the foundation come back to the district and are used to fund our District and Global Grants. This helps us provide goods and services in our communities, $50,000 in matching funds this year, and around the world, another $50,000 in matching funds. Donations to the foundation can also be used in Rotary's commitment to eradicate polio, the End Polio Now campaign. It is important to recognize those Rotarians in our district who have committed to being sustaining members -- over 80% of District 5750 Rotarians. Sustaining members donate a minimum of $100 per year. For those Rotarians who are able and willing there is an even better way to support the foundation and help the district do more -- the Paul Harris Society (PHS). The PHS is for those Rotarians committing to donate $1000 per year for as long as they are able. We in District 5750 have several members committed to being PHS members. This year we have a very unique opportunity -- an anonymous donor has come to us and will MATCH the FIRST YEAR contribution for NEW Paul Harris Society members. Your first year's $1000 donation becomes $2000! Imagine how much more we could accomplish in service throughout the district and around the world if we had 50 new PHS members this year. I believe this to be a reachable goal. I challenge each club to find at least one new PHS member and believe some can do much more. More information on this opportunity will be available on the district website soon. I want to take this opportunity to recognize and congratulate the Rotary Club of Bricktown for being awarded the Outstanding Service Organization award from the Association of Fundraising Professionals. The award was presented at the AFP of Oklahoma luncheon on October 31st. Congratulations Bricktown! I encourage you to share with your communities and with each other all that you are doing in the way of service projects and fundraising. Help us become better Rotarians by working together in service. Speaking of service, the district service project for the final day, May 17th, of the district conference has been arranged. The Regional Food Bank in Oklahoma City serves over 50 of the state's 77 counties and could use some help. They told me they could use 150 volunteers on that day. I told them I didn't know if I could get that many but I would try. Please help prove me wrong by having at least 150. Remember February 22, 2014, is the date of the annual bi-district foundation banquet. Rotary President Ron Burton will be our guest speaker and will be recognizing those who have made substantial contributions to the Rotary Foundation. Please plan to attend. Let s have a great year in District 5750 Having Fun Doing Good. Art Bode Governor District 5750

(Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) program at Central Middle School. Any Boulevard member, including Baldwin, DGE Michelle Schaefer and PDG Chuck Musgrave can arrange for tickets. Watch the club's Facebook header for an up-to-date "score" of the tickets sold. Flyer available at the end of the newsle er. Northwest OKC - Fr. George Miley Our district will soon say goodbye to a long-time member. Fr. George Miley and his wife Louise are packing their bags to move to South Carolina to retire. Miley, an Anglican priest, has been a Rotarian with perfect attendance for 35 years, and a member of Northwest OKC Rotary for 18 years. He worked on the District 4 Way Test Committee, and is a PHF+4 and a Benefactor. Fr. George was a driving factor in the success of NW Rotary's Santa and Easter Bunny photo project, pioneering the move from Polaroids to digital cameras. He worked tirelessly to make sure the supplies were stocked, and designed and built and custom cabinets used in the project. He is excited to move closer to his daughter and grandchildren, and notes that he is moving to the district that is home to Anne L. Matthews, the first female vice-president of Rotary! Best of luck Fr. George! Edmond Boulevard - Will Rogers Elementary DSG Edmond Boulevard Rotary recently received a district grant to purchase math manipulatives for third graders at Will Rogers Elementary in Edmond. Club president Jeremy Baldwin and Will Rogers Third Grade teacher Lauren Folks hold some of the supplies the club purchased for the students. Boulevard Rotary will also donate dictionaries and thesauruses to the class later this year.
4 November 2013 Edmond Boulevard - Dining in the Dark Members of Edmond Boulevard Rotary recently participated in a service project called "Dining in the Dark" at the UCO Campus in Edmond. The group served as ushers and assisted the staff in seating guests and passing out sensory exercises to help raise awareness of the challenges faced by those who are visually impaired. Guests were blindfolded before entering the room, and had to eat their meal, pour beverages and pass condiments without being able to see. Mustang - Spooktacular Mustang Rotary Club participated in the Mustang Spooktacular on October 26th. The club had it s wheel and Caldrons of fun for all the children to win a prize or candy. The objective is to spin the wheel and land on number 1,2,3, or 4. Each number corresponds to a caldron of surprises. Each Caldron is unique in the contents which makes the children want to spin again and again. At least 350 to 400 community children spun the wheel. Great fun and a great evening overall, if you don t count the rain. Page 4

The Katanga Methodist University will oversee the rig and provide supervision of drilling operations. The Stillwater Frontier Rotary Club paid for the "Drill Kit" which is capable of drilling 50 water wells to a depth of 80 feet. The team flew to Lubumbashi, DRC where they have an appointment with the Katanga Governor Moise. Ed along and Roger Gose, Rotarians, will visit Rotary clubs in the Congo, encouraging them to make a joint application for a Rotary International "Matching Grant" for appropriate follow-on projects. Matt Hangen and Roger Gose will teach Congolese men how to continue the drilling of wells after the team returns. The team is taking with them enough funds and well pumps to drill 16 wells. Each well will serve a village with no electricity, of 300 people where currently 1/2 the Children die before age 6 because of polluted stream water! Each well will save the lives of 3 children each year. Additionally the new well will allow the girls to go to school. Currently the girls walk many mikes each day hauling water for the family. Weatherford - Amphitheater The Weatherford Rotary Club has partnered with the City of Weatherford to build a Amphitheater (Stage) in Rader Park, Spring I'm super excited about the project! The Weatherford Rotarian's raised $50,000, and the City of Weatherford has agreed to match that. The project cost is roughly $100,000. It will represent Rotary for a long, long time. We also will use it for our fourth of July festivities, it works hand and hand! That's the number one reason we did this. The Amphitheater will serve many c o m m u n i t i e s a r o u n d Weatherford. I know the Chamber and it's committees will use it, plus SWOSU, the City, schools, etc. We are planning on breaking ground late January, early February.
