1 Superintendent Inspiring Today s Students To Meet Tomorrow s Challenges Washburn Way Klamath Falls, OR PHONE FAX thedeg@kcsd.k12.or.us Date: April 27, 2017 KCSD high schools have strong showing at FBLA state competition 25 headed to national competition Klamath County School District high schools had a strong showing at the FBLA State Business Leadership Conference in Portland with 112 KCSD students competing and 25 of those continuing on to national competition. Students from Mazama, Lost River, Bonanza and Gilchrist high schools attended the competition on April 8 and 9. 2 Additionally, Madelyn Cunningham from Bonanza won her campaign to the FBLA State Business Leadership Conference. She will join the state officer team as the Cascade Region vice president. She is the first student from Bonanza to be a state officer. I am really proud of them. It is so rewarding to see their confidence grow and realize that hard work does pay off, said Freddy Maldonado, business teacher at Bonanza. I am especially proud of Madalyn Cunningham for stepping up to the challenges of running for Cascade Region vice president. I believe she will represent our school and district extremely well. I m blown away, Rafael Ivan Hernandez said of the achievements of his Lost River team. As a new teacher I have been very impressed with the students at Lost River. Their hard work, dedication and determination has been second to none. I am honored to be a part of this great school and look forward to what lies ahead. Gilchrist FBLA also competed, with all 14 members of its team going to state. Gilchrist FBLA ers did great, said business teacher Michael Telford. All of the chapter qualified for the state conference and 40 percent placed in the top 10 of their events. The top four in each state division qualify for the national competition, said Judy Story, business teacher at Mazama. At nationals, the top 3 percent are competing out of all 230,000 FBLA members nationwide. To step up to that level, FBLA students continue to cultivate their skills and gain new ones. The growth of students is phenomenal, Story said. They increase their confidence, their poise and gain real-life business and communication skills. They gain a lot of skills, Maldonado agreed. They develop confidence and begin to learn about networking and connecting with other students. They also learn about competition and winning and losing, in addition they begin to see what personal responsibility means when they have to depend on teammates and their peers rely on them for success.

3 Aside from learning speaking, writing, presenting, networking and leadership skills, I feel their biggest gain is confidence, Hernandez said. Confidence to know they are awesome, confidence to know they will be successful in their lives and confidence to know they can go out into this world and dominate. Students gain many things such as self-confidence and networking opportunities that may lead to knowing someone at the college they later attend, agreed Telford. Finally, they are around others like themselves for three days that are all doing good things and going places. Being from the Basin they have opportunity to see what there is outside of Klamath County and the opportunities that lie in other areas, Maldonado added. It is an extremely beneficial opportunity for our students.
