"This, more than anything, is the key point I want to make today - that this new Administration doesn't view service as separate from our national Fun and Useful Fact: The Volunteer Center has a new website! 2 priorities, or in addition to our national priorities - we see it as the key to achieving our national priorities. We believe that the only way to build that new foundation for our economy is to establish a new role for service in this country," she said. The conference featured a star-studded lineup of elected officials and popular culture figures including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, California First Lady Maria Shriver, Matthew McConaughey and an inspirational performance from Jon Bon Jovi, who stated that, "We're going to be the ones that make volunteerism hip." 3 The Board Match January 12, 2010 Moscone South San Francisco, CA Find out more when you visit The Volunteer Center online or go directly to the application by clicking here! The Board Match event is sponsored by: Summer of Service By: Kristen Kramer As keynote speaker at the National Conference on Volunteering and Service held June 22-24, 2009 in San Francisco, First Lady Michelle Obama inspired thousands of nonprofit, business and government workers as she spoke about President Obama's nationwide initiative to ignite a Summer of Service. Beginning June 22nd, at the kickoff of the National Conference and running through September 11, 2009, the Summer of Service is part of an ongoing initiative called United We Serve. This summer, our President has recognized that in order to best start this initiative we need to encourage everyone in our country to serve our communities directly and impact the areas that affect all community members. By helping improve these areas--schools, health care and the environment--we can start down the road to recovery and renewal! The Summer of Service is being promoted as an excellent opportunity for youth to make positive change during their summer vacation. Specific programs are in development, which will provide opportunities to connect young people to their community while educating them about civic involvement and boosting confidence! 4 BACVC Member Spotlight - Kaiser Permanente The Volunteer Center's Bay Area Corporate Volunteer Council (BACVC) engages businesses in supporting the nonprofit sector through employee volunteering and advises them on how to tie those efforts to their philanthropic goals, corporate social responsibility strategies and business success. In the days immediately after Hurricane Katrina (August 29, 2005), Kaiser Permanente responded to the relief effort with a financial pledge of $3 million, two clinical teams dispatched to treat patients at the Houston Astrodome evacuation center, and hundreds of volunteer hours from employees. Over the next few months, Kaiser Permanente created a volunteer database to organize the thousands of employees offering help. In addition, employees donated $170, to the relief effort when Kaiser Permanente allowed them to donate the cash value of their accrued vacation time. In 2006, as part of our commitment to the long-term recovery in the Gulf Coast, through our partnership with Hands On Network, we planned a week-long service project that took place in January, It was designed not only to mobilize volunteers, but as a recognition of the people of Kaiser Permanente who have a history of volunteerism and community service in their own communities and even internationally. For the third year in a row, in 2009, Kaiser Permanente partnered with HandsOn affiliates on the Gulf Coast Volunteer Project. There were over 430 applications for the 60 volunteer slots. Applicants were judged on their responses to the questions in the application, including previous community service experience and skills. The first group of 30, working with HandsOn New Orleans during the week of May 17-23, converted former Sunday school classrooms into a primary care clinic for the working uninsured. The second group worked with HandsOn Gulf Coast in Biloxi, Mississippi May and refurbished a historic home and grounds, along with other community projects. Through pictures, photo essays, videos from Biloxi
5 and New Orleans, as well as notes from the field from our volunteers, we share inspiring glimpses of the recovery efforts on our Community Benefit web site. About Kaiser Permanente Kaiser Permanente is America's leading integrated health plan. Founded in 1945, the program is headquartered in Oakland, California, Kaiser Permanente serves 8.6 million members in nine states and the District of Columbia. Today it encompasses Kaiser Foundation Health Plan, Inc., Kaiser Foundation Hospitals and their subsidiaries, and the Permanente Medical Groups. Nationwide, Kaiser Permanente includes approximately 164,000 technical, administrative and clerical employees and caregivers, and 14,000 physicians representing all specialties. The organization's Labor Management Partnership is the largest such health care partnership in the United States. It governs how more than 130,000 workers, managers, physicians and dentists work together to make Kaiser Permanente the best place to receive care, and the best place to work. In 2007, Kaiser Permanente proudly directed $1 billion to support community benefit programs and services through research, community-based health partnerships, and direct health coverage for low-income families and collaboration with community clinics, health departments and public hospitals. To learn more about the Bay Area Corporate Volunteer Council, please click here NVLC Spotlight - NVLC Vision Statement The Volunteer Center's Nonprofit Volunteer Leaders Council (NVLC) provides a platform for Bay Area nonprofit professionals to access the resources they need for volunteer program development and management, facilitates a forum for these professionals to tap into a peer network for support, and provides a venue for cross-sector interaction with its sister-council the Bay Area Corporate Volunteer Council. Nonprofit Volunteer Leaders Council Vision Statement The NVLC is an innovative initiative targeted at creating cross-over venues for interaction between the nonprofit and business sectors. While exploring and providing information about best practices in volunteer program development and management, this council of nonprofit volunteer leaders brings the work of volunteerism to the forefront so nonprofits include volunteerism as part of their business bottomline--not just in direct service, but in all aspects of the organization. Directly modeled after its award-winning sister council, the Bay Area Corporate Volunteer Council (BACVC), the NVLC is leading the way to solving community issues through creative thinking, partnerships and collaborations. 6 TVP Volunteer Spotlight - Karen S. By: Matt Miller The Volunteer Center's Transitional Volunteer Program (TVP) provides vocational training to people with mental health disabilities. TVP places clients in volunteer jobs as a means of transitioning to a life of work - more than 120 placements per year. Karen S. sure does love children. Within minutes of hearing about all of the great opportunities The Volunteer Center has to work directly with children, she was ready to go! With a shining smile and positive outlook on life, Karen has become another incredible success story for the Transitional Volunteer Program (TVP). After attending a TVP orientation and meeting our counselors, her enthusiasm quickly earned her an interview at San Francisco School Volunteers, and the second her smiling face entered their office it was a match made in heaven. Despite a long placement process, Karen arrived prepared, flew through the background checks, and within a week she was volunteering in a classroom at Monroe Elementary! After her first day she reported, "I went to Monroe Elementary today and met Lisa Jones and her class of all boys!! It was a great day. I had a lot of fun helping these bright boys with their reading and spelling. They are a handful. I'm really glad I found the Transitional Volunteer Program and the San Francisco School Volunteers to volunteer with." Karen has already made an incredible impact in her short time volunteering, and we can't wait to see what the future holds for her as she continues to engage in meaningful service within our community! To find out more information about hosting a TVP volunteer at your nonprofit, please contact Matt Miller, Vocational Counselor, at Ext 245 or by mmiller@thevolunteercenter.net. FYI - Upcoming Dates!
