Glen had his first planning meeting last Saturday and I am sure you will all want to stay tuned for the out come of all of his planning. The room was so full of energy. This coming Monday we have Tom Yamachika as our guest speaker. Tom is the interim president of the Tax Foundation and is going to talk with us about a few very timely topics. On the 14th we will be off site at Kapiolani Community College for a vocational tour of their culinary program so be sure to mark your calendars. The District conference is coming up in less than a month so be sure to register now. Look forward to seeing everyone Monday. Hope you enjoy the beautiful spring weekend. A Hui Hou. 2 This week s Speaker Tom Yamachika Tom Yamachika was as surprised as anyone when Lowell Kalapa, the widely known, respected and liked president of the Tax Foundation of Hawaii, died in December at age 64. "Obviously, when he passed away very suddenly it was a huge blow to all of us, and a huge shock," said Yamachika, a tax attorney in private practice who subsequently stepped up to the plate and is now the foundation's interim president. Yamachika was a board member of the foundation at the time of Kalapa's death. He was asked to serve as interim president by its chairman, Michael O'Malley, who also is a partner in the law firm Goodsill Anderson Quinn & Stifel. Kalapa had been president of the foundation since He was seemingly tireless in speaking on behalf of Hawaii taxpayers before various state legislative committees and City Council hearings, offering the views of the nonpartisan research and educational group on prospective legislation affecting taxes. That role is being carried on, for now at least, by Yamachika, assisted by two other employees of the foundation, which is funded by 200 or so individual and business members. He said it's been fun but challenging, since he's had to juggle his duties at the foundation with his continuing law practice. "It's been kind of like working two jobs,"he said last week. "I'm here (at the foundation) in the daytime doing this, and I kind of deal with my law practice sometimes in patches during the day and some nights and weekends. But so far it's OK. I haven't lost a whole lot of sleep over it. Maybe on occasion." Yamachika, 55, graduated from Farrington High School before going on to earn a bachelor's degree in engineering and applied science at Yale College, then a law degree from the University of California at Berkeley. He is a tax committee affiliate member of the Hawaii Society of Certified Public Accountants, a member of the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and a past board treasurer of Goodwill Industries of Hawaii. He resides in Aina Haina with his wife and their three dogs.

6 Here are the items we are putting in the packs: pencils crayons erasers lined paper spiral notebooks protractor stick glue scissors pencil case pocket folders rulers Last Monday, backpacks were adopted by members to be filled with school supplies for the elementary schools we support, as well as for the children in the H.O.M.E. shelter. We also collected $85 from members who were time challenged and wanted to help fund the "adoption"! We have 75 backpacks to fill and are looking for Sunset members to "adopt" or fund one of these cute little backpacks, if you haven't already. Next Monday we will bring another supply of backpacks for you to adopt. Those of you who took the backpacks on March 31st, please bring your backpacks and donations back to Monday's meeting or if you didn't have time to shop, remember you can bring it back and make a donation to the shopping fund. JB and Jane will purchase school supplies with those funds and are seeking donations from local suppliers as well. THANKS for everyone's support of this very important project! Just one more example of Rotarians lighting up a life!
