(Hons) degree in Electronic Engineering from the Shahid Beheshti University, Tehran, Iran, in 2001, the M.Sc. degree in Control Engineering from the Amkabir University, Tehran, Iran, in 2003 and the Ph.D. degree in Electronic Engineering from the Iran University of Science and Technology, Tehran, Iran, in After one year appointment at Shahid Beheshti University, in 2008 he joined the Shahid Chamran University as an Assistant Professor. He worked as a postdoctoral research fellow at Esslingen University and IAER, Germany, in His research interests include digital circuits and systems design, optical and wireless networking. Dr Kavian has over 50 technical publications including journal and conference papers and book chapters in these fields. He is a senior industrial engineer and trainer with more than 10 years industrial experiences. Mark Stephen Leeson received the degrees of BSc and BEng with First Class Honors in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the University of Nottingham, UK, in He then obtained a PhD in Engineering from the University of Cambridge, UK, in From 1990 to 1992 he worked as a Network Analyst for the National Westminster Bank in London. After holding academic posts in London and Manchester, in 2000 he joined the School of Engineering at Warwick, where he is now an Associate Professor. His major research interests are coding and modulation, ad hoc networking, optical communication systems, and evolutionary optimization. To date, Dr. Leeson has over 180 publications and has supervised nine successful research students. Péter Babarczi received the M.Sc. degree in Technical Informatics from Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME), Budapest, Hungary, in 2008 and is currently pursuing the Ph.D. degree at the High-Speed Networks Laboratory, Department of Telecommunications and Media Informatics, BME. His research interests include combinatorial optimization, routing in circuit-switched survivable networks, availability analysis, and routing in delay-tolerant networks.

Currently, she is a visiting Assistant Professor in Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Sweden as. Her research interests include design and analysis of wavelength-division-multiplexed networks with focus on survivability, multilayer resilience, and energy efficiency. Jiajia Chen received a B.S. degree (2004) in Information Engineering from Zhejiang University, China, and a Ph.D. degree (2009) in Optical Networking from the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Sweden. Currently, she is working as a Postdoctoral Researcher in Next Generation Optical Networks (NEGONET) group at KTH. She is the co-author of over 50 publications in international journals and conferences in the area of optical networking. Her research interests include fiber access networks and switched optical networks. Taisir El-Gorashi received a B.S. degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the University of Khartoum, Sudan, and an M.Sc. degree in photonic and communication systems from University of Wales Swansea, UK in 2004 and 2005, respectively. In 2010 she obtained a Ph.D. degree in optical networking from the University of Leeds, UK. Currently she is a post-doctoral Research Associate in the School of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, University of Leeds. Her research interests include next generation optical network architectures and green ICT. Jaafar Elmirghani is the Director of the Institute of Integrated Information Systems within the School of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, University of Leeds, UK. He joined Leeds in 2007, and prior to that ( ) as chair in optical communications at the University of Wales Swansea, he founded, developed, and directed the Institute of Advanced Telecommunications and the Technium Digital (TD), a technology incubator/spin-off hub. He has provided outstanding leadership in a number of large research projects at the IAT and TD. He has co-authored Photonic Switching Technology: Systems and Networks, (Wiley) and has published over 300 papers. He has research interests in optical systems and networks and signal processing. Dr. Elmirghani is Fellow of the IET and Fellow of the Institute of Physics. He was Chairman of IEEE Comsoc Transmission Access and Optical Systems technical committee and was Chairman of IEEE Comsoc Signal Processing and Communications Electronics technical committee, and an editor of IEEE Communications Magazine. He was founding Chair of the Advanced Signal Processing for Communication Symposium which started at IEEE GLOBECOM
3 and has continued since at every ICC and GLOBECOM. Dr. Elmirghani was also founding Chair of the first IEEE ICC/GLOBECOM optical symposium at GLOBECOM 00, the Future Photonic Network Technologies, Architectures and Protocols Symposium. He chaired this Symposium, which continues to date under different names. He received the IEEE Communications Society Hal Sobol award, the IEEE Comsoc Chapter Achievement award for excellence in chapter activities (both in 2005), the University of Wales Swansea Outstanding Research Achievement Award, 2006 and the IEEE Communications Society Signal Processing and Communication Electronics outstanding service award, Abdelhamid Eshoul received B.Sc (hons.) degree in electrical and electronic engineering from Aston University, Birmingham, U.K., in 1984 and the M.Sc. degree in electrical and computer engineering from Queen s University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada, in He completed the Ph.D. degree in electrical and computer engineering at the University of Ottawa, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, in Upon completing his PhD degree, he started working as a postdoctoral researcher at the School of Information technology and Engineering of the University of Ottawa. His research interests include development of routing and wavelength assignment algorithms for survivable WDM wavelength-routed mesh networks. Andrea Fumagalli received his Ph.D. from Politecnico di Torino, Italy, and is a Professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of Texas at Dallas. Prior to joining UTD he was an Assistant Professor of the Electronics Engineering Department at the Politecnico di Torino, Italy. He is a member of the Open Networking Advanced Research (OpNeAR) Lab at UTD ( His research interests include aspects of wired and wireless networks, and related protocol design and performance evaluation. He has been involved in a number of research projects focusing on packet switched and fault tolerant networks, and has published more than one hundred papers in peer reviewed journals and conferences. He served on the Editorial Board of the ACM/IEEE Transactions on Networking and two Elsevier journals. He was on a Distinguished Lecturer Tour for IEEE ComSoc in Zabih Ghassemlooy received BSc (Hons) degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from the Manchester Metropolitan University in 1981, and MSc and PhD from the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST), in 1984 and 1987, respectively. He is currently a Professor of Optical Communications and an Associate Dean for Research in the School of Computing, Engineering and Information Sciences at the University of Northumbria at Newcastle, UK. He also heads the Northumbria Communications Research Laboratories within the School. He has supervised a large number of PhD students and has published over 370 papers (123 in journals + 8 book chapters). His research interests are on photonics switching, optical wireless and wired communications, visible light communications, and mobile communications. He is a co-editor of an IET book on Analogue Optical Fibre Communications, and the founder and chairman of the IEEE, IET International Symposium on Communications Systems, Networks, and DSP. He is a Chartered Engineer of EC UK, a Senior Member of IEEE, and a Fellow of IET. He is currently the Chairman of the IEEE UK&RI Communication Chapter. Burak Kantarci received his B.Sc., M.Sc, and Ph.D degrees in Computer Engineering at Istanbul Technical University (ITU) in 2002, 2005, and 2009, respectively. During his Ph.D study, he conducted research at University of Ottawa as a visiting scholar under supervision of Prof. H. T. Mouftah. Dr. Kantarci is currently a post-doctoral fellow at the School of Information Technology and Engineering 337

David Lastine is a graduate student at Iowa State University expecting to earn a Ph. Published works are in the areas of fault tolerant routing, traffic scheduling on light trails, and network coding. Hoa Le Minh is currently a Senior Lecturer in Optical Communications and Computer Networks Groups of School of CEIS. He gained his BEng, MSc, and PhD at Ho Chi Minh University of Technology (HUT, Vietnam) in 1999, Munich University of Technology (Germany) in 2003, and Northumbria University (UK) in Hoa worked at Siemens AG (Munich, Germany) during to design the ultra high speed DWDM optical systems. During he was a research fellow at Oxford University and developed the optical wireless communications system. Hoa s researches focus on Photonics system, optical wired and wireless communications, visible light communications, computer networks, and mobile communications. Jan Lubkoll received his Bachelor of Engineering degree from Esslingen University of Applied Science, Germany. He has some years of experiences in fiber-optic data buses (FlexRay) in the aviation field. His major research interests include technologies of micro systems, ultrashort pulsed laser and optical communication. He is co-author of several publications in the field of fiber-optic sensors, and optical data buses in cars and aeroplanes. Now he is a student in the elite Master program of Advanced Optical Technologies at the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen. Carmen Mas Machuca is a Senior Researcher and Lecturer in the Institute for Communication Networks (LKN) at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), Germany. She holds a Ph.D. degree from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Lausanne (EPFL) and a Telecommunications Engineering degree from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), Spain. Her research interests include techno-economic studies, network migration, service and network reliability, and control and management of optical networks. She is a member of the IEEE. Carlos Mex-Perera is with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Tecnologico de Monterrey, Mexico. He received a B.Eng. degree from the Instituto Tecnologico de Merida, and a M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from the Centre for Research and Advanced Studies of the National Polytechnic Institute, Mexico. He holds a Ph.D. in Computer Security from the University of Bradford, UK. His research interests encompass Computer and Telecommunications security. His current focus is on resilient and self-organizing networks: providing resilient mechanisms to telecommunications networks to defense against attacks. He is also interested in artificial intelligence applications to network security. Paolo Monti received a Ph.D. degree from the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) in 2005 where he worked as a Research Associate until He joined the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in September 2008 where he is currently an Assistant Professor and a member of the Next Generation Optical Networks (NEGONET) group. He co-authored more than forty papers published in international 338
5 journals and presented in leading international conferences. Dr. Monti is serving on the editorial board of the Springer Networking and Electronic Commerce Journal. Mouftah joined the School of Information Technology and Engineering (SITE) of the University of Ottawa in September 2002 as a Canada Research Chair (Tier 1) Professor in Optical Networks. He has been with the ECE Department at Queen s University ( ), where he was, prior to his departure, a Full Professor and the Department Associate Head. He has three years of industrial experience mainly at BNR of Ottawa, now Nortel Networks ( ). He served as Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Communications Magazine ( ) and IEEE ComSoc Director of Magazines ( ), Chair of the Awards Committee ( ) and Director of Education ( ). He has been a Distinguished Speaker of the IEEE ComSoc ( ). He is the author or coauthor of six books, 40 book chapters, and more than 1000 technical papers and 10 patents in this area. Dr. Mouftah is a Fellow of the IEEE (1990), the Canadian Academy of Engineering (2003), the Engineering Institute of Canada (2005), and the Royal Society of Canada RSC: The Academy of Science (2008). He is a Chartered Engineer of EC UK and Senior Member of IEEE. Dr. Ng currently serves as the vice-chair of IEEE UK&RI Communication Chapter where he was also the secretary from He was also the co-chair of the Signal Processing for Communications Symposium in IEEE International Conference on Communications (ICC) 2009 (Dresden, Germany). Gerard Parr holds the Full Chair in Telecommunications Engineering in the School of Computing and Information Engineering at the University of Ulster in Coleraine, UK. He holds a PhD in Self Stabilizing Telecommunications Protocols, aspects of which he developed whilst a Visiting Scientist at the DARPA- funded Information Sciences Institute in Los Angeles, USA and with University College London. Areas of PostDoc and PhD research within the Information and Communications Engineering group include self-stabilizing protocols for security and resilience, interplanetary network protocols, intelligent mobile agents in xdsl and SNMP, real-time data analytics for network management systems, energy aware telecommunications infrastructure, memory and computational resource management protocols, applications performance management in virtualised environments, energy-efficient protocols for the access-customer premises pathway, and dynamic bandwidth allocation strategies for WiMAX-EPON integration. He has extensive experience of managing government and industry-sponsored research contracts and has developed a close working relationship with a number of major ICT companies including Cisco, BT, SAP, Ericsson, InfoSys, Wipro, Sasken, Tejas, IBM, Toshiba, Fujitsum, and Rockwell Inc. Daniel Seibl is Graduate Engineer and Research Assistant in the laboratory of physics and photonics at the Esslingen University of Applied Sciences. After some years of practical work at Siemens VDO in the fields of quality management, especially in process qualifications and failure mode and effective analysis, he studied Electrical Engineering with the major of Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems and specialized in Micro Optics and Laser Technology. In October 2008 he received a degree in this study. The main research interests are in the fields of fiber-optic technologies, light-induced fluorescence, and three dimensional measurement techniques. He already has experience in automotive fiber-optic data buses (MOST) and fiber-optic sensors. Somani is Anson Marston Distinguished Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Iowa State University. Professor Somani s research interests are in the area of fault tolerant computing and networking systems. He has published ~300 technical papers and book chapters, a book, and has supervised more than 100 graduate (35 PhD) students. He has designed and built several systems including anti-submarine warfare system (Indian Navy), Meshkin system and HIMAP analysis tool (Boeing) and Proteus multicomputer system (US Coastal Navy). He is awarded ACM Distinguished Engineer member, IEEE Communication Society Distinguished Lecturer, and IEEE Fellow grades. Otto Strobel is Head of the Physics Institute and Director of Physics Laboratory, Faculty of Basic Sciences at Esslingen University of Applied Sciences in Germany and Honorary Chair of the IAER group. He received his Dr.-Ing. degree from Technical University of Berlin and his Dr. h.c. degree from Moscow Aviation Institute, Technical University of Moscow in Russia. In 2011 he was awarded as Honorary Professor by the Tecnológico de Monterrey in Mexico. He published about 80 papers in the field of fiber-optic technologies and optoelectronics and performed more than 30 visiting professor stays worldwide. He is author of the textbook (in German language) Technology of Lightwave-Guides in Transmission and Sensing (VDE 2002, 2nd edition) and co-author of the text book (in German): Photonics (Springer, 1st ed. 2005). His research interests include optical networks, real-time computing, mobile and wireless networks, cognitive radio networks, trust and information security, and Semantic Web. He was a recipient of the US Department of Energy Career Award and the AFOSR senior research fellowship. His research has been supported by US Department of Energy, National Science Foundation, Air Force Office of Scientific Research, Air Force Research Laboratories, Ohio Supercomputer Center, and the State of Ohio. Lena Wosinska received a Ph.D. degree from the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm, Sweden, where she is currently an Associate Professor heading a research group NEGONET (Next Generation Optical NETworks: Her research interests include energy efficient optical networks, photonics in switching, optical network management, reliability/survivability of optical networks, and fiber access networks.
