2 The Digital Economy is growing at over 10% per year across G-20 countries ( ): o 18% in emerging economies o 8% in developed economies The Internet of Things (IoT) will transform many industries, from manufacturing to agriculture, which together, will account for nearly two-thirds of GDP by THE DIGITAL ECONOMY IS HERE! Ontario s ICT sector o $32 billion of Ontario s GDP o 45% of total Canadian ICT GDP in 2015 o $7.8 billion of exports, representing 67% of total Canadian ICT exports in

3 ONTARIO IS WELL-POSITIONED TO LEAD IN THE DIGITAL ECONOMY ENGINE OF CANADA S KNOWLEDGE-BASED ECONOMY AND THE EPICENTRE OF ITS ICT ACTIVITY: Second largest ICT cluster in North America Seven of the ten largest tech companies in the world conduct R&D in Ontario (Apple, Google, Microsoft, Oracle, IBM, Intel, Cisco and Huawei) WORLD CLASS RESEARCH AND EDUCATION: 44 universities and colleges, producing more than 39,600 skilled graduates in science, engineering, mathematics and related technologies, each year. Ontario universities attracted over $2.7 billion in sponsored research income HIGHLY SKILLED WORKFORCE: 67% of Ontario s adult population have a post-secondary education 3 ONE OF THE MOST DYNAMIC AND SUPPORTIVE ECOSYSTEMS FOR R&D ON THE PLANET: More than $14 billion is spent on R&D every year Dynamic centres such as Bayview Yards, MaRS Discovery District, Ontario Centres of Excellence, and the province s network of Regional Innovation Centres (RICs) to offer commercialization, advisory support and R&D matchmaking The Ontario government s Business Growth Initiative rests on three pillars: o scaling up high-growth firms; o embracing innovation and o lowering the cost of doing business through regulatory modernization

4 NEXT WAVE HERE & NOW Over $375 million in transformative technology projects to build an open innovation platform 2016 Business Growth Initiative introduced THE ARC OF ONTARIO S INNOVATION SYSTEM Ontario Network of Entrepreneurs (ONE) introduced. Youth Entrepreneurship Strategy released with $295M budget commitment to support youth through Campus-Linked Accelerators and Ontario Campus Entrepreneurship Activities. Ontario Network of Excellence developed, the first provincial program and service network. $160 million budget commitment to target the innovation, commercialization, and entrepreneurship continuum Ontario Commercialization Network revamped. Engaged over 200 businesses & community leaders First investments in Research Parks and Incubators. Summer Company programs launched and 190 students start a summer business. Business Self-Help Desks begin to convert to comprehensive offices in 29 communities.

7 ONTARIO S TRANSFORMATIVE TECHNOLOGY PROJECTS 5G-NGN (Fifth Generation and Next Generation Networks) $130M to support two projects - $67M in ENCQOR and $63M in CENGN via OCE to advance the development and commercialization of 5G and next-generation technology networks. Artificial Intelligence (AI) Vector Institute $80M to create an institute with a specific focus on deep learning and machine learning more broadly, including accelerating to 100 applied AI masters grads per year. Autonomous Vehicle Innovation Network (AVIN) $80M to create a connected and autonomous vehicle innovation network across Ontario, in partnership with OCE. Ontario s investment will support industry-led AV R&D projects, including a Demonstration Zone; and attract and grow AV talent. IBM-I3 $27.75M to provide SMEs with technological resources, physical space and expertise to scale their companies, as well as access to supercomputing technology and Watson. Quantum Technologies $20M committed in Budget 2017, to support the development of cutting-edge research, the training of highly qualified personnel and academics in the Quantum Valley Ideas Lab. Cybersecurity $4M pilot project with OCE to partner start-ups with financial institutions to accelerate the growth of cybersecurity and fintech start-ups, and support the adoption of emerging cyber technologies by financial institutions. 7 Advanced Manufacturing Consortium (AMC) $35M to help develop long-term industrial innovation projects and support industry-academic partnerships with McMaster, Waterloo and Western.
