2 RESEARCH: U.S. Patent No. US 6,301,534 B1 was issued on October 9, 2001 on a device for Automobile Steering by Commanding Lateral Acceleration. The license agreement already in force with Ahnafield Corporation was amended and extended through This patent covers a joystick steering control for a car that implements a new paradigm; i.e., the driver commands lateral acceleration rather than front wheel steer angle. This paradigm avoids the increases in lateral acceleration gain with speed that plagues currently available high gain automobile steering controllers. Dr. McDermott has been Principal Investigator or Co-Principle Investigator of research projects for which his share of funding has been over $4 million from l975 to the present. During this time student membership and participation has increased six fold and Texas A&M now is the third largest SAE student chapter in the U.S. Faculty Advisor (with Chona and Caton) to Texas A&M team in LPG Vehicle Challenge (international student design competition) first place, 1997 second place. Dr. McDermott was the faculty advisor for the TAMU chapter of Pi Tau Sigma (ME honorary society) in academic years and Dr. McDermott was the faculty advisor for the TAMU Men's Soccer Club from 1986 until This club was chosen Texas A&M Sports Club of the Year three times during this period and was a finalist for this award on two other occasions. They won the Texas Collegiate Soccer League six times and represented the league in the Collegiate Club Soccer National Championship tournament where they advanced to the finals once, the semi-finals twice, and the quarter-finals twice. When he stepped down as faculty advisor, the A&M Men s Soccer club had an annual budget of over $15,000 which they earned as partners in putting on the Aggieland Classis youth soccer tournament described below. Dr. McDermott was the founder and the Tournament Director for the Aggieland Classic youth soccer tournament from This tournament is still held every year and brings over 200 youth soccer teams (over 4,000 people) into College Station and Bryan for the last two weekends in February. The profits from this tournament support local youth soccer. From 1982 until the January 1987 Dr. McDermott was chairman of the Department of Mechanical Engineering Building Committee and ME User Coordinator for the definition of requirements, design, construction, and equipping of the Engineering-Physics Building. The cost of the ME portion of this building was over $10 million.
