International Doctorate Centre High Value, Low Environmental Impact Manufacturing
Foreword We have been working with global companies for over thirty years developing innovative products and processes, that have made a real impact on the market place. This is achieved through integrated research programmes which successfully bring together industry partners and researchers to work on innovative solutions to real world opportunities. Innovation is not without risk, it involves venturing into the unknown and there can be no guarantee of success, but risk is at the very core of innovative research. Our new International Doctorate Centre in High Value, Low Environmental Impact Manufacturing will train the future leaders of industry. In order to succeed in the global environment companies must be able to adapt to the changing global landscape; this includes having entrepreneurial leaders who have an appreciation of science, technology, engineering and who can make an impact in the global market place. You will be joining one of the world s leading research groups with state-of-the-art facilities and will work with our leading edge researchers in high value, low environmental impact manufacturing. Your doctorate will be awarded from the University of Warwick, giving you an internationally recognised qualification from one of the UK s leading innovative universities. Professor Lord Kumar Bhattacharyya, KB, CBE Director of WMG, University of Warwick

Introduction Our approach to research has seen us collaborating with global companies to develop innovative solutions which help them to compete in the global market and give our partners a competitive advantage. We are a leading centre for world class education with extensive expertise in post graduate programmes. Our research graduates add significant value to global companies through major innovations, with many now holding Board level positions. Our new International Doctorate Centre builds on this pedigree by delivering a revolutionary new doctorate for the 21st century. It will address industrially challenging issues that will enable companies to develop and implement innovative and world leading sustainable research solutions. Our International Doctorate is a four year programme that combines industry relevant research, taught courses, international visits, entrepreneurial flair and networking. Driven by research teams that combine industrial and academic experience, we work with entrepreneurial leaders who understand and appreciate that global environments are constantly changing. Companies need an understanding of the strategic and commercial benefits of moving into a low-carbon economy. Our vision is to create a future generation of manufacturing leaders with the highlevel know-how and research experience that is essential to compete in a global environment defined by high impact and low carbon. They will be adept at working in multi-disciplinary teams and exceptionally well networked internationally, with demonstrable entrepreneurial flair. Sponsored by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), our centre is at the forefront of actions to help ensure that the UK maintains a strong global position in manufacturing through more successful innovation, adoption and exploitation of low carbon technologies. As a Research Entrepreneur you will benefit from a rich blended learning experience enabling you to excel in leading positions within industry. With the support of your sponsoring company you will gain an understanding of academic, business, cultural, and environmental issues in global manufacturing nations. 04
About WMG WMG is an academic department within the University of Warwick which provides a unique bridge between academia and industry. Founded by Professor Lord Bhattacharyya in 1980 in order to reinvigorate UK manufacturing, our mission is to improve the competitiveness of companies through the application of value adding innovation, new technologies and skills deployment, bringing academic rigour to industrial and organisational practice. Today there are over 300 staff working across four buildings at Warwick, we have education centres in six countries and an annual programme of over 100m. Our success over the past 30 years is the result of cutting-edge research and effective knowledge transfer, working with global companies such as Airbus, Arup, AstraZeneca, BAE Systems, GlaxoSmithKline, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), Network Rail, Rolls-Royce, Siemens, TATA Motors, TATA Steel and TVS. Today we work with both global companies and SMEs across many sectors to produce innovative products and processes. The strength of our research expertise in high value, low environmental impact manufacturing extends across digital technologies, materials and manufacturing. Concerns about the environment and use of natural resources are embedded in our research. As society changes the way it engages with the environment, we remain committed to pursuing new and innovative ways to deliver conventional and nonconventional solutions. By combining our research expertise with a multi-disciplinary approach, we provide businesses with the opportunity to engage in hi-tech research and development. We work across many sectors including aerospace, automotive, creative industries, healthcare, heritage, horticulture, motorsport and pharmaceutical. We have seen more than 24,000 individuals involved in our education programmes. In 2009 we were awarded the Queen s Anniversary Prize for Higher Education which highlights that our philosophy of providing academic excellence with a clear business focus is a winning formula. 05

Student Testimonials Stephen Lambert, Senior Engineer - Hybrid and Electric Vehicle Integration, Lotus Engineering WMG's doctorate programme felt like a natural progression into the research I wanted to pursue. Due to the flexibility of the programme I was able to tailor my research allowing me to undertake projects that I enjoyed and which benefited my sponsoring company. The specialist skills I developed have enabled me to leap forward in my career. Dr Ian Riggs, Executive Vice President for Quality and Continuous Improvement, Rolls-Royce I chose WMG because the reputation of a university is based on the people who work and study there. WMG at the University of Warwick has a great reputation of working with some of the largest companies and cutting edge technology which I wanted to be a part of. 11
